A few months into the year and I have been doing a good job of sticking to my resolutions.

I have to say I haven't collected for a system in a long time and I am really glad I got into wii collecting. There are so many great, unique experiences on this system and it is grossly under rated. I get there was a lot of shovel ware on the system (with 1200+ games in its library, how could there not be) but there really are some fantastic wii exclusives out there besides the token Mario/Zelda's etc.

I'm constantly stumbling upon new games and really enjoying what the system offers, I have also developed a new appreciation for the wiimote/nunchuck. There definitely are some games that shoehorn motion controls in and suck, but the games that use it well it just works great and is so much fun. I just think it adds a nice level of immersion for certain games and couldn't imagine playing games like red steel 2 or sin and punishment without them.

Looking back on the resolutions I made in January, I've made good progress so far, and have finished three of the seven games I mentioned. The titles I finished so far are: Beyond Oasis, Shining Force 2, and Shenmue II.

I'm currently focused on Wonder Boy in Monster World, but after that I might start up Super Mario RPG, which I also listed in my resolutions to revisit and play again.

I think I'm still on track to finish most of the games I mentioned earlier in the year. The only exception is Symphony of the Night, as I still haven't purchased it yet.

Hey look at that, we're quarter of the way through the year.

Make a significant dent in my RPG and strategy backlogs

My goal is 20-24, or around 2 per month. I'm doing OK at that so far!

This is the current list:
Beat:
1. Ys: The Oath in Felghana (PSN Vita)
2. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (Switch)
3. Paper Mario: Colour Splash (Wii U)
4. Valkyria Chronicles (Switch eShop)
5. Illusion of Time (SNES)
6. Trials of Mana (Switch)
7. Undertale (Vita)

In progress:
8. Dragon Quest IV (NES)
9. Final Fantasy X-2 (Vita)

Up next:
Herzog Zwei (MD)
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War (SFC)
Great Greed (GB)

Participate in Together Retro every month I can

I'm on track for this so far - below is what I've played
January: Ys: The Oath in Felghana
February: The Firemen & Bishoujou Senshi Sailor Moon
March: Rastan & Rainbow Islands

In April I'll probably try to play Herzog Zwei.

Focus purchases on gen 5 consoles and Nintendo portables

Mostly doing this. I picked up one or two other things, but I've also bought a couple of harder to obtain N64 and Saturn games, as well as a bunch of Game Boy stuff.

Beat more games than I buy
I'm about even currently.

On track so far - I have 13 games on the games acquired list and 15 on games beaten.

Beat one game for every console I haven’t beaten a game on in the last 2 years:
• PS2 – Freak Out
• Vita – Dragons Crown
• PSP – Yggdra Union
• GG – The GG Shinobi II
• 3DO – Star Control 2
• PCE – The Gate of Thunder
• NGPC – Cardfighters Clash
• PC – Discworld Noir

So far I've played none of these

I didn't get around to playing one in April - it's been a tough month. I'll try and play Herzog Zwei this year and post my thoughts though!

With me beating Halo 2 last night, I'm now going to concentrate on beating all of these games in a row.

Up next, I will be tackling Baten Kaitos.

May is over, time for another update. Almost half way through the year!

Defenders of Oasis (GG)
Crystal Warriors (GG)

Participate in Together Retro every month I can

Mixed on this one. I started strong but have fallen off a bit.
January: Ys: The Oath in Felghana
February: The Firemen & Bishoujou Senshi Sailor Moon
March: Rastan & Rainbow Islands
April: Didn't play (meant to play Herzog Zwei)
May: Didn't play (meant to play Grandia II)

June should be fine though - I have SRPGs in progress and upcoming to play

Focus purchases on gen 5 consoles and Nintendo portables

Mixed. Recent purchases have been on Switch and Game Gear.

Beat more games than I buy

On track so far - I have 20 beaten and 16 purchased.

Vita – Undertale
• PSP – Yggdra Union
• GG – The GG Shinobi II
• 3DO – Star Control 2
• PCE – The Gate of Thunder
• NGPC – Cardfighters Clash
• PC – Discworld Noir

Still played none of these. But I did beat a Vita game already, so I'll mark that off.

With Atelier Iris 3 and half of the year being over, I've decided to update my progress on this list.

My next three games will be the final games on this list.

Then, I'm going to try to reduce my Unfinished to underneath 40. That might take a moment as I have been beating games slower this year or I've been playing some much longer games.

I have completed all of my console goals!! :D

All that is left is to focus on my main goal.

I'll also be able to pick and choose what games I want to play for the rest of the year. I might do some quick short games to hopefully get back on track as I feel like I'm a bit behind at the moment.

It took until 5 days before 2021, but I am currently sitting on 39 Unfinished Games. :D

How did everybody else do?
Did anybody reach their goals in 2020??

Re: 2020 Gaming Goals and Resolutions

So about half way through the year I realised that all of the lists and goals I was setting for myself were stressing me out, that I had to-do lists even for my leisure activities that were overwhelming me, and decided to back away from them from that point forward.

That said, I'm still curious how much progress was made, so here's a final reviewd for the year.

I'll be setting goals again in 2021, but they'll be a lot looser and more flexible so I don't feel like I'm checking boxes all the time.

alienjesus wrote:Gaming goals:

Make a significant dent in my RPG and strategy backlogs

My goal was 20-24, or around 2 per month. In the end I only managed about half of that and I ended up acquiring almost as many RPGs as I beat. But at least a lot of 'big' titles were taken out, so I don't feel bad about how well I did here.

This is the current list:
Beat:
1. Ys: The Oath in Felghana (PSN Vita)
2. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (Switch)
3. Paper Mario: Colour Splash (Wii U)
4. Valkyria Chronicles (Switch eShop)
5. Illusion of Time (SNES)
6. Trials of Mana (Switch)
7. Undertale (Vita)
8. Dragon Warrior 4 (NES)
9. Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
10. Pokémon Omega Ruby
11. Final Fantasy VI
12. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition

Participate in Together Retro every month I can

Yeah, I totally fell off on this one. I reckon I participated to some degree in about half of the Together Retro's this year. Several I intended to join but as mentioned earlier, towards the end of the year I decided to just focus on playing whatever I wanted to play and stopped worrying about hitting specific goals or criteria.

Focus purchases on gen 5 consoles and Nintendo portables

Yeah, to be honest this didn't much happen. I picked up a few Saturn titles and I got a PS1 game for Christmas, but if anything my retro purchases were much more SNES and Game Gear focused this year

Beat more games than I buy

I'm not going to bother adding this up but needless to say it didn't happen. I mostly broke even this year until I bought a ton of eshop games at Christmas on the sale.

Beat one game for every console I haven’t beaten a game on in the last 2 years:
• PS2 – Freak Out - Nope
Vita – Undertale - Yep!
• PSP – Yggdra Union - Nope
GG – The GG Shinobi II - Yep, and a bunch of others too
• 3DO – Star Control 2 - Nope
• PCE – The Gate of Thunder - Nope
• NGPC – Cardfighters Clash - Nope
• PC – Discworld Noir - Nope

Only beat 2 of these but oh well!
