Seems more like one of those inclusions that's more about completion, as it was a pack-in game for the system early on (in the US at least).

Come to think of it... most of the pack-in games are included. Aside from Altered Beast, we have Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Streets of Rage 2. We just need Vectorman and Lion King (and I guess NFL ‘94 for the sports fans). Maybe those will be in the next batch.

Nice! Here's final 12.

Tetris (ridiculously rare version!)
Darius (brand new port!)
Virtua Fighter 2
Alisia Dragoon
Monster World IV
Kid Chameleon
Road Rash II
Eternal Champions
Columns
Dynamite Headdy
Strider
Light Crusader

I suck at Eternal Champions but it's a cool game with ridiculous fatalities.

Good choice on Road Rash 2. Graphics took a weird MK turn in 3. Humming music now...

Did we mention Strider much? Solid addition.

Dynamite Heady & Alisia Dragoon... score

Don't care on Tetris. New Darius? ... hmmm interesting.

No MUSHA. Think they missed an opportunity there.

Tetris and the new Darius port are just bonus games that weren't expected so that's nice. M2 is amazing at ports so Darius should be pretty cool.

I have a soft spot for the weird Virtua Fighter 2 port but I wouldn't have picked it for this.

Monster World IV is one of the best games on the console. Getting this game in front of more people is fantastic.

Kid Chameleon, I think we all knew it was coming and were mostly hoping it wasn't. Give me MUSHA or Leynos or Yu Yu Hakusho or Langrisser II from the Japanese side. Oh well, it was a nostalgia choice.

Alisia Dragoon is a great game that definitely benefits from more exposure.

Road Rash II is my favorite and was of course the one I was hoping they'd go with, very pleased with this choice.

Eternal Champions... maybe this game has its fans but I was never able to enjoy it, especially not in single player where the AI reads your freakin' mind. Would have preferred not to see this one.

Columns was a predictable if not exciting inclusion.

Dynamite Headdy was a natural for many people's wishlists.

Strider, love it or hate it, is a historically important early arcade port for the Genesis and it's still pretty fun and should be here.

Light Crusader isn't a bad game but I never really got into it and we've already got Landstalker which is similar and better.

I'm pretty happy with this list, but Tetris is a really weird inclusion and I have no interest in the Genesis version. Virtua Fighter 2 is one I will never understand being included in Genesis collections. The port straight up sucks and is not Virtua Fighter. Maybe the name/brand sells and that's why...

I echo people's thoughts on Eternal Champions. I always thought it was cool in school, because I had a buddy who had it and he would always kick my ass and show me the awesome fatalities. Then I bought it myself and couldn't get into it, because the AI was just insane in a bad way... I love the characters, stages and fatalities though, but yeah, I find it too hard.

I'm really pleased Strider, Dynamite Headdy, Road Rash II and Monster World IV are there. And I have a huuuuge soft spot for Light Crusader, although it's obviously not the greatest Action Adventure game of all time.

Kid Chameleon and Virtua Fighter 2...ugh...

I’m cool with the rest of these, though (and even if they could have subbed some of the loser titles out for stuff like Gleylancer and MUSHA).

Why is there no mention of Road Rash II on either the North American or European sites? Am I not looking hard enough?

I think this is a pretty solid list of games, I think they did a great job of making the list appeal to both casual nostalgic fans and the hardcore Sega-fanatics. I'm planning on buying both the American and Japanese versions.
I have a sizeable collection, but there are a lot of games I've never played before. And I'm personally really excited for Tetris; I've never played the Sega version and the fact that it's fantastically rare makes it pique my interest.

Yeah that last row there is missing a game which makes 39 + the 2 bonus games. Don't know what's up with that. Maybe there's some issue with the box art licensing.

Edit: Road Rash is listed in the trademarks section at the bottom.
