Sega Genesis Mini 2019 - Not Flashback, Not AtGames

Post by Jagosaurus »

I didn't see a dedicated thread on the the official Sega mini. Burnout after Neo Geo, NES, SNES, & PSX perhaps? Let's dive into the mini system which promises to fix problems from the sub-par Sega licensed flashback & AtGames consoles. This is set to launch September 19th this year.

Here is a solid write up to catch you up as of now.

These were the 1st 10 titles announced.. of 40! Yup... double the other minis.
Image

Sega then held a YouTube livestream announcing games 11-20. We now have 20 of the 40 titles and they're looking good IMO.

Thus far, 20 games have been announced for the western version. They are:
Ecco the Dolphin
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Space Harrier II
Shining Force
Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
ToeJam & Earl
Comix Zone
Sonic the Hedgehog
Altered Beast
Gunstar Heroes
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck
Thunder Force III
Super Fantasy Zone
Shinobi III
Streets of Rage 2
Earthworm Jim
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Contra: Hard Corps
Landstalker

UPDATE: 5/16/2019 - Titles 21-30 Announced:
Mega Man: The Wily Wars
Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition
Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Beyond Oasis
Golden Axe
Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball
Vectorman
Wonder Boy in Monster World

UPDATE: 6/4/2019 - Titles 31-42 Announced:
Tetris (ridiculously rare version!)
Darius (brand new port!)
Virtua Fighter 2
Alisia Dragoon
Monster World IV
Kid Chameleon
Road Rash II
Eternal Champions
Columns
Dynamite Headdy
Strider
Light Crusader

My answers/thoughts to these were pre-5/16 update.
What do you think of the list so far?
I'm impressed. Not sure about the 2 Mickey games vs 1, but they're solid and will appeal to families. Maybe including those will make it be under more Christmas trees.

Pretty cool we saw Super Fantasy Zone which was JPN exclusive before. Also, the JPN console release will see Sega Channel exclusives. Maybe we'll get Pulseman here!?

40 games is nice. Really gives them room to have a nice section of their A+ library in there.

What else do you expect to see?
Golden Axe
Vectorman
Sonic 3
Sonic & Knuckles
Phantasy Star IV
Shining Force II
Revenge of Shinobi
Dynamite Headdy
Ristar
Rocket Knight Adventure
Decap Attack
Kid Chameleon
John Madden Football (no licensed NFL teams makes it easier)

What are your longer-shot hopefuls?
Pulseman
Beyond Oasis
Mega Bomberman
TMNT Hyperstone Heist
Road Rash
Mutant League Football
Mutant League Hockey
Street Fighter II CE
Dinosaurs for Hire
Crusaders of Centy
Wonder Boy in Monster World
Dune
Herzog Zwei
NBA Jam
MUSHA
McDonald’s Treasure Land Adventure (lol... i can hope 8) )

Is your confidence is Sega too low at this point to pre-order & are you looking forward to this?
I am surprisingly excited for this. The other minis didn't appeal to me much. Even though Genesis emulates very well on multiple platforms I own, I am tempted to get this. Also, pretty nice it comes with 2 controllers, HDMI, and all charging components. Maybe a sign they aren't cheaping out here. Also, their recently released controllers as a partnership with RetroBit seem to be getting solid early reviews. Maybe they're getting on the right track...

The US version ships with 3-button controllers, so don’t expect SF2

Yeah, hoping USB opens some doors there. Even outside of 6 button games, I just like how that controller fits in my hands better.

Maybe the before mentioned USB Genesis controllers, which I was planning on picking up if good reviews continue. I have a Buffalo SNES controller as well... figures crossed additional USB controllers are supported.

Super Fantasy Zone had a PAL release as well but I didn't expect to see it here. It's my favorite Fantasy Zone game personally. I was surprised to see the Mickey games and also surprised that they used two of them but they're both great games at least. Makes me wonder if Aladdin is a possibility.

There are a few things here I'm sick of seeing in Genesis collections like Comix Zone and Altered Beast which feel like they're only there because they're expected to be and I can do without Mean Bean Machine though I get the need to throw it in. I also kind of wish Space Harrier 2 was replaced with something better. Hell, go all the way and put the 32X port of Space Harrier on there instead.

I'd love to see one or both of the Rolling Thunder games but that's unlikely. Splatterhouse 2 would be a nice surprise as well.

Getting one or more of the sought after games like MUSHA, Alien Soldier, Crusader of Centy would be pretty cool, but I don't have my hopes up. Herzog Zwei would be great for two-player versus but I don't know how many people are willing to sit down and learn how to play Herzog Zwei against each other.

I haven't bought any of these mini-consoles and probably won't get this one either but I do hope that the quality stands up to Nintendo's offerings.

I didn't know Super Fantasy Zone had a PAL release! Speaking of... hopefully folks in PAL regions get taken better care of than compared to how Sony handled it.

Great point on Aladin. I always liked the one. We played Lion King & Jungle Book a lot too.

Yeah, I thought about Splatterhouse 2 or 3, but wasn't sure they'd put them on there. Then again... PS1 classic had at least 1 mature title I can think of offhand. Might not be the best mini to model yourself after though

I have Sega compilation / plug & play fatigue at this point... but damn that game selection is rock solid.

I am really excited for this actually, because the Mega Drive is probably my second favourite console after the Dreamcast and it looks like they're finally doing it right.

1. It's being handled in-house and M2, who have done incredible work on the Sega Ages Switch library is developing the software side. So it will hopefully be phenomenal compared to the dodgy console collections and abysmal AT Games consoles we have had.

2. Sega have put tons of work into a really diverse library, with great third party support. There's already a number of games I didn't expect to see, which makes a real change from the usual stuff.

3. I can't complain about having a mini Genesis with HDMI hook up and hopefully 60hz... Please don't screw over PAL regions, Sega... I notice we're getting New Generation (Bloodlines) and Probotector (Contra Hard Corps) hmm... but hopefully we will have an option to pick between PAL and NTSC versions in games that have regional differences and all other games will be 60hz NTSC versions as standard. I hope!
