I saw this on sale for 97% off this morning, putting it at (IIRC) $0.89, and since I still had about $2 worth of gold coins on my Nintendo account, I figured why the hell not.

I bought these maybe a couple months ago at this point, but I decided to finally share:

They are:
Yutona Eiyuu Senki: Tear Ring Saga (PS1)
King's Field III (PS1)
Lunar: Eternal Blue (Mega CD)
Tengai Makyou: Jiraia (Super CD)
Shin Megami Tensei II (SFC)

I got Tear Ring Saga, King's Field III, and Tengai Makyou together for about $20 before the eventual refunds. The packaging was-- not advisable. So KF III, and Tengai Makyou arrived with damaged cases. Also, KF III was supposed to include the manual, but didn't. (My guess is that the seller didn't even look in the case, and just assumed that the front cover was the manual, or something.) Anyway, KF III ended up being free to me, and the other two ended up being about $6.00 each, after a partial refund on Tengai Makyou. I'm still kind of upset to have KF III in such jank shape, even if I technically didn't pay anything for it; The hinges are broken, and the disc is a mess. I cleaned it up, and it actually plays, but it still doesn't sit well with me. Oh well. King's Field is a trash series anyway, right? (Come at me, Ex!)

The other two games were much less screaming deals, but I'm happy to finally have them.

I have to say, the special Super CD release of Tengai Makyou: Jiraiya has one of the most incredible manuals I've ever seen for a game. A lot of the more Hudson backed RPGs for the console had some pretty amazing manuals, and extras, but this one in particular stood out to me. It's pretty excellent. Also, I had no idea, until firing it up, that Hirasawa Susumu composed the soundtrack for the game. It's pretty hard to argue with a man who writes something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWEYajrxiEU. Title theme in Jiraia is pretty great, but it seems like that might be the only streaming redbook audio. The other stuff I heard in the beginning of the game is still pretty good, though.

I was waiting on SMT II for about a month and a half, and actually got around to testing it today, after it finally showed up a week ago. Maybe about a year or two ago, I had ordered this game, and was sent a copy of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, instead (which I already had). I thought I might have lost this one in the mail, this time, and even when it did get hear, I didn't notice where the mailman put it, so it was basically sitting out in a pretty heavy storm before I found it. Fortunately it was wrapped in plastic, inside the box. I was still a little concerned about the moisture, but I did my usual cleaning of the pins, powered it up, and-- nothing. It was a pretty unusual sort of, "nothing," though, where I was getting some kind of scrolling lines of noise through the typical black screen. I thought this might just be the universe conspiring against me, at that point, but I took the case apart, and did a pretty deep clean on the whole thing, which was probably good. There was some weird stuff I don't want to think too much about on the lip of the back of the case, where the plastic presses up against the PCB. Fired it up again, and it seems to be fine.

So, I had heard, many moons ago, while watching a youtuber's rundown of all the SMT games he'd played, that SMT II is not as interesting as the previous three games. I guess because, as I would paraphrase what he'd said, 'All the shit already done gone down, though.' What I didn't realize (at least it seems this way) is that SMT II directly follows the first game, in terms of the story. Actually, now that I think about it, it's almost like SMT I and II took the story in Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II (where you begin the game in shelters because of a previous nuclear holocaust, and later witness another nuclear holocaust), and split it up between them. Anyway, SMT II starts post apocalypse, whereas the first SMT begins pre-apocalypse. It seems that in SMT II, the Mesiah 'cult' emerged victorious after the events of SMT (Law ending, maybe; I don't know, because I only allow for true, neutral, endings), and the demons have been sealed away under this tetrahedral structure, that I assume is this "Center" place people are talking about. Anyway, suffice it to say that it's not exactly what I was expecting, but I'm really curious about where this game's story is going. I'm also now very curious about how SMT III's story slots in, now.

I added The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction for the Nintendo GameCube this evening!

Once a year, we have the Missouri Game Con here in St. Louis. It is a great place for people and vendors to buy and sell their stuff. Last weekend was the 4th year, so it is slowly growing, but it is still rather small. For the next couple of posts, I will post some games that I got from last year's convention.

I was nearing the end of my first loop around the Vendor Hall when I came across a booth for a store in town. The store is one of the fixtures in town and one of the best we had. I know the owner and we talked for a bit while I was looking at his selection. I noticed that he had the Incredible Hulk and that was my GameCube choice. I realized that I had gone through many first party Gamecube games and I wanted to space them out more. So, I figured a GTA style action game where the Hulk can use anything as a weapon sounded like some fun.

I've heard some awesome things about Hulk Ultimate Destruction. Sandbox... hulk smash... I'm in.

As a bonus, supports 480p & widescreen on PS2, oXbox, & GCN. I've been meaning to pick it up, likely on oXbox as it's also one of the few 720p titles.

Sweet. My PS1 Firemen 2 import arrived in great shape. Excited to fire this one up.... yeah...

I also DLed the JPN SFC ROM of the original. Need to try it as well. For those intrested, there's a patch for the Euro SNES release so you can have the English text but the game at 60Hz. You have to get into IPS file set up. Need to tinker with it.

Surprisingly, it's fairly cheap on all the platforms and should be pretty easy to find. And that is the exact same reason I picked it up, so hopefully that is what I will get.

Near the beginning, I spotted a vendor selling some extremely expensive NES games that were beat to hell. For example, he had a Panic Restaurant with basically no label. They were all reduced in prices, so it made them rather affordable. He had two copies of DuckTales 2, one of them had an extremely torn label and the other one wasn't so bad.

Before we left, I walked back to the guy and checked out the nicer version. The back label was torn to shreds and there was a tiny piece of plastic near the game board that was missing. Otherwise, the front label looked beautiful and it was an actual copy. He was offering $120 for it and I decided to take it. I had been wanting DuckTales 2 for many years and my friend agreed to switch the backs for me. Now, I own a nearly mint copy of DuckTales 2.
