@alienjesus: My heart goes out to you reading those reviews, I have gotten to the point that I just can't tolerate playing something I am not completely enjoying but you are a trooper. I actually do want to check out gain ground, I generally hear good things about it but all of your criticisms make sense, its been on my bucket list forever.

Also, is kid chameleon only 3 hours? When I played through it the game felt like it took me 457 hours or so to beat. I rarely make absolute best or worst statements regarding my opinion of video games because it changes so often, but if you put a gun to my head and asked me to name my least favorite game of all time I feel reasonably confident I would say kid chameleon.

It is a game that is absolutely oozing with potential and drops the ball in just about every conceivable way, watching people play it actually makes me angry and I'm getting worked up just typing this, it is one of the most poorly designed games ever. Having said that, I actually think of all the games getting remakes that kid chameleon has the potential to be a pretty amazing game if remade with our current standards of retro themed games, hand it over to a developer like wayforward and I bet it would be awesome.

@prfsnl_gamer: I'm glad you finally played Ninja Gaiden, it definitely is one of those games that is a very nice surprise for fans of the series. I completely agree about what you said about the bosses, most of them you can just outsmash and use no strategy. I think the story is complete shit as well, its been awhile since I played it so I can't offer specific criticism I just remember there were a lot of glaring things that stood out to me at the time.

It is a really fun game though, I think your placement of the game in the hierarchy of the series is on point as well.

@MrPopo: FF adventure is a game I completely forgot existed, now that I read your review I definitely remember owning it as a kid, who at the time had no idea it wasn't an actual final fantasy game.

Kid Chameleon can get rather long if you take the longer paths through it.

One of the most poorly designed games? Ridiculous comment.

Also, great reviews. I find them immensely entertaining.

Thanks, another batch should come tonight. I'm actually still posting reviews for games I beat in March and April - I have a backlog of 29 or so still to write and post

And yeah, that was definitely a rough patch on the collection. As mentioned before, I divided the collection into 9 waves of games to beat to ensure some diversity. Wave 4 was definitely the weakest!

Nothing wrong with that. I thought it was boring, not bad.

Nice review. I really enjoyed that game, I think it's far better than Secret of Mana. And swapping weapons for weaknesses later on is tedious, but it beats spending 8 minutes every boss fight in SoM opening the spell menu and casting over and over.

prfsnl_gmr wrote:55. Ninja Gaiden (SMS)

I played this one last year and quite enjoyed it. It's a good Ninja Gaiden title for those days where you can't quite put up with some of the bullshit of the NES games

That's a damn lie and you know it. :D

It's the honest truth
As I said, I thought they both sucked, but one sucked for 30 minutes and one sucked for 3 hours. Choose your poison

If they had been longer games I wouldn't have persevered, but being that they're so bitesize, and that I have a mission to clear all 51 games on the collection, I did my best. Luckily, because I spaced out series over the collection and put sequels after their earlier entires, the remaining games I have on the collection are generally above average. There shouldn't be too much as bad as the ones I just posted reviews for now.

And yeah, Kid Chameleon is also now a contender for one of my least favourites of all time.

I'm sure there are plenty of worse games out there than Kid Chameleon, but I didn't make myself sit through those so I have less opinions about them

I stand by it

insanely long game with no passwords or save--its release date is no excuse, plenty of nes games had either passwords or battery back up
levels that are non-linear, require exploration, and also have a strict time limit that make sure you actually can't explore at all
samey boss battles
invisible blocks that randomnly kill you because you accidentally jump into one
generally cheap level designs
no sense of progression at all, like you just never know if your going backward or forward or just repeating the same levels over and over again
poor implementation of a very cool idea (ie: lots of costumes, few are used in a way to maximize their strengths)
very limited lives with no continues? or limited continues? (I don't remember) again ridiculous given how long the game is

Those are the most glaring flaws I could think of having not played the game for about 2 years, but it really is a game that I completely disdain.

Having said that I get why you may like it because the parts of a good game are there. The amount of variety in the costumes is very cool and I absolutely give the game credit for it's ambition. As I said earlier, give the license to a developer like wayforward and I bet a new kid chameleon can be one of my favorite retro remakes but as it stands now, I just hate that game.

If it makes you feel any better, I also really enjoy E.T. on atari 2600 so take my opinion for whatever thats worth.

You need to play more actually bad games...

Edit: Ok I haven't played ET myself.

No I'd rate Kid Chameleon around 7/10 maybe, the lack of saving is a serious issue unless you're emulating.

I was stunned by how bad Kid Chameleon was. Barely playable. It has one of those grating "techno" Genesis soundtracks that's just so dated and corny too. The same developers were behind Comix Zone as well, correct? Because that one is even worse, somehow.

Wouldn't call any of the tracks techno. There's some funk/fusion and some vaguely industrial rock type songs, not that I care for it much either besides the islands theme track.

Comix Zone has a grunge/alt rock style soundtrack, some of it is pretty good. A better game overall, but brutally hard and kinda short.

Can't believe all this Kid Chamelion hate. Worst thing is people piling on and this isn't even the first multi-page Kid Chamelion bash in this forums history.

But you're all wrong. It's a gem on the Sega Genesis.

I almost never post on Racketboy but am compelled to come to this games rescue!

IMO Kid Chamelion has it all. Graphics, music, sound effects, level design and innovation. Huge replay ability. There are secret warps so the "no password / save" argument is null.

Alright. This weekend I'm starting a Kid Chamelion appreciation thread. All haters welcome of course. Just maybe I'll be able to turn you around.

So what you're saying is that it's at least as good as the original Super Mario Brothers? Yeah, I'd buy that.
