FC Mobile 88 (FC) - https://www.play-asia.com/fc-mobile-88/13/706yjx

Let me know what other clone consoles are out there! Note that this is for consoles that look to completely replicate another console. As in, you can use original carts, controllers, etc. The RetroN 5 is boarder line, but still acts as a console. The NES/SNES Classic and PlaySation Classic is not a clone console, it's an emulation box. Stuff like the Atari Flashback is really cool, but not a clone console. Perhaps we should have another thread for plug and play consoles, some of them can be awesome. A thread for plug and play consoles can be found here.

Horrible and hilarious Chinese clone consoles need not apply. I'm looking for stuff that is currently being manufactured and is readily available to be purchased new from a store (or direct from the maker like Analog or Retro Zone). I know there's a megafuckton of NOAC consoles out there. I'm looking for the more quality experiences though.

For now, this will just be a list. The reader will have to do their own comparison. I might eventually clean this thread up and do a bullet point spec list for each console, like my flash carts thread. But for now, it'll just be a list.

Boss thread idea.

A couple of others that came to me.

Retro Freak. Is this excluded for being Japan only? It's very similar to the Retron 5, and can be purchased easily via PlayAsia.

The Polymega.... thought this was out but it isn't?! 2019, apparently.

I added it. I also noticed on their website something called the Retro Freak Basic. Looks like it's just a clone SNES/SFC.

Added. Thanks!

How deep is this rabbit hole?

There is the FC Mobile 88 handheld on the market, runs FC games or NES with adapter, doubles as a console if you run the wire to the TV. HIghly compatible, just a few lightly used upper mapper chips from Japan don't work on it.

Also what's the feel for the ATGames stuff? The last 2 years of the Sega Genesis HD console device while loaded with games also has a Genesis cart slot. This unlike the firecore garbage runs pretty well and even finally allows save batteries in real carts to work too. I've been semi-tempted even to grab one myself but then I realize it's a stupid idea unless I found one locally at a goodwill, The Mega NT device tempts me, I do miss Sega at times and coupled with an Everdrive that could get the SMS and GG covered too, totally coverage. I think that Sega flashback can handle the everdrive, not sure but I could google that easily enough.

There are also the Atari Flashbacks too, both the handheld that uses SD cards and also the console that does the same and I think that latest one can use old carts.

With the Supaboy you need to be more clear, re-title it as the Supaboy S/Supaboy SFC. They work great, they even simulate the picky stuff like that strike force game with the shadow most emulators won't do, and the inside redesigned has a d-pad that works Nintendo correct. The old the d-pad was barely functional broken and many games wouldn't play that used special chips or had picky tricks.

Like I said, I know there's an infinite amount of NOAC consoles out there. My idea for this thread was mainly to find clone consoles that are...

A) Worth considering to replace original hardware
B) Readily available to purchase in new condition

These aren't hard rules, but a general guideline for what I'm after here.

I think FPGA consoles should be their own catagory. They aren't clones exactly and they aren't emulation. More somewhere inbetween.

Also, The AVS is THE BEST

FPGAs, done correctly, have much better accuracy, but they are, in a sense, the same as a clone console. They're just doing it a different way. The modern "clone" console is just a general purpose SOC that runs software emulation. The FPGA consoles are attempting, instead, to emulate the hardware environment on a programmable chip so that they can run the game software directly instead of in a software-emulated environment. The end result, however, is similar. You are playing your games, or digital copies of games, on a system that is not an original, classic system.

I think it's helpful to note which consoles are using which method, but I don't think it's necessary to treat them as fundamentally different devices.

So the NES Classic or RetroN 5 are software solutions, and FPGA consoles are a hardware solution. But either way, it's a clone console.

I'll do what I did for my other threads, when I get the chance. I'll make a spoiler tag for each entry on the list, and in the spoiler I can bullet point some specs or pros and cons.
