I guess I'm kind of around saturation as well, so I've cut myself off from buying anything but Switch stuff and pretty much very selective on that too. It's starting to do some good, even evading deep sales on GoG/Steam too pretty much has helped as well. I've lately gotten whining emails from some key sellers (greenman, fanatical) asking why I haven't bought with added reduction waivers.

Right now working on FF15 Pocket and it's really quite oddly good. Still ever since 10 none have felt as they really are FF games as they were, but as a game in general, not bad.

I definitely understand the saturation argument. I don't stop with the new stuff, though, mainly because while I have a large library of games, a ton of them are games that I was only somewhat interested in and picked up for cheap. A lot of the big hitters I want to play, though, tend to take priority over all else. New Zelda games will do that, as will Dragon Quest in most instances. (I'm still burned out on RPGs now. And man, I could have gotten a deal on it yesterday if I'd waited. But hey, vote with your pocketbook and all that.)

Still, there is something to be said for remaining behind a generation and snagging everything cheaper. And while I'm up on the current gen, I'm mostly patient these days for AAA titles. Those are so common that they tend to get marked down really quickly.

As far as censorship is concerned (yep, I'm gonna open that can of worms again), games are far less censored now than they were during the old days. I mean, people don't even bat an eye when it comes to stuff like Mortal Kombat, Night Trap, or DOOM. I'd even argue that they seem downright quaint compared to what we see today. As far as nudity is concerned, I'm not sure the console makers have ever left full explicit nudity in games unless they get an AO rating? Even then, those ratings are ridiculously rare, and often times, the developer themselves will make the changes to get to the "M" line so that it can be retailed in more reputable stores.

Also, as others have pointed out, if one has to have eroge-style games, there are lots of options these days. I'll be honest, I don't completely understand it, given how pervasive pornography is on the 'net anyway, and most (not all, somehow!) games of those types are pretty weak to begin with and rely on the sex factor to sell.

I've only briefly skimmed this thread but I'm seeing similar sentiments I've been thinking about lately... I'm in the twilight zone living in an era where Sony is censoring things even more than Nintendo lately. Whaaaat? Never thought I'd see that happen.

Tanooki wrote:Right now working on FF15 Pocket and it's really quite oddly good. Still ever since 10 none have felt as they really are FF games as they were, but as a game in general, not bad.

FF15 has already gone down as one of the biggest jokes of the last decade. With all the news lately of Tabata either leaving or being fired, them cancelling 75% of the rest of the DLC, etc, it's downright hilarious. Final Fantasy which once saved Square Soft, is now potentially going to be their downfall. They are trying WAY too hard and expect the media and fans to bow down to anything they ever do with the IP.

I think all the Xenoblade's have come out in the time they spent wasting on FF15. All the Soulsborne games. Nier Automata took Platinum like ~2 years or something maybe. The list of games and franchises born and thriving in the time it took them to make FF15 would be monstrous.

I'm going to laugh when KH3 doesn't sell like hotcakes since it's even more niche' and childish than FF. Sure, it's got some vocal fans but I doubt it's going to light up a storm and will certainly disappoint fans waiting a decade and a half for this sequel. Glad I never liked this series so I won't be disappointed.

And now they've got like no good directors left. Square Enix can still do some good on their smaller budget titles but on the AAA level they are a joke thesedays, they handle Eidos and their Western studios horrendously, etc yeah. I wish Platinum owned the Nier license and Yoko Taro could escape Square, then I wouldn't give a damn about them. Hopefully Dragon Quest still stays strong sticking to its traditions, I'm excited to play XI eventually.

Resident Evil 2 Remake was announced a year AFTER Final Fantasy 7 Remake was announced... and we will be playing RE2R in about ~3 months. Don't give a fuck about FF7R anymore since I have zero faith in modern FF. Wake me up when the clown Nomura is no longer running Square's ship, if he doesn't sink them entirely.

Never though FF13 would look like a masterpiece, but FF15 made that happen.

I thought FFXV was fairly well received? I certainly didn't hate my time with the game.

I think the director resigning and the DLC getting cancelled was more on that other project he was doing than it was with FFXV. I dont think many see the game as a joke, and it was pretty well received, especially in relation to how XIII was...

Apparently XIII was huge in Japan. Might explain how that one got a full trilogy... I'm tired of getting ONE main FF a generation thesedays, but yeah oh well. Square Enix will never be Square Soft anyways.

The speculation I've heard is that they were working on a new IP but Luminous might be forced on FF7R or FF16 now, which Tabata probably wanted nothing to do with. It does kind of sound like it was his call to leave, but who knows. I don't really blame him for the faults of FF15, dude had to come in and somehow salvage Nomura's mess. Did what he could, but after playing the $60 beta at launch pre-patched Chapter 13, even after the movie and short anime OVA... still hated it and felt half baked. Story was trash in the back half, couldn't control anyone else, magic system sucked, summoning system sucked, Yoko's most forgettable OST of all time, RPG mechanics boiled down to some measly skills system and equipping a few accessories, 99% side quests were MMO styled drivel for some Gil or food items. I'm slipping into a coma just thinking of this monstrosity!

The "home base" setting for FF15's crew was a freaking gas station. How epic is that.

Sarge wrote:I thought FFXV was fairly well received? I certainly didn't hate my time with the game.

I think people are turning on it in a Zelda like way haha. Sales wise yeah I think it did fine but I'm pretty sure Monster Hunter World beat it, among others. FF isn't a top dog anymore and I hate to admit it. 90% of the time I see people praising FF15 I'll see "it was my first" mentioned.

Xenoblade 2 and Torna give me all the awesomeness I wish FF still had but yeah, I'll just look to Monolith-Soft now for my big JRPG fix. It's a crazy concept, but I love when a game has a beginning, middle, and end...

I don't think Squenix are complete idiots, and while I do (as an outsider looking in with this tinfoil hat theory) think that firing Tabata was a bit extreme when he seemed to only just be getting started on his own IP after effectively saving FFXV from being vaporware forever, I do think there is a method to Squenix's madness. I think they're well aware of how much of a colossal waste of money and time that FFXIII Versus/FFXV's development cycle has been, and the same goes for KH3. My hypothesis is that Tabata's new IP was looking to be just as much of a terrifying time-sink as their other more recent AAA projects and that they were looking to nip it in the bud before it got insanely out of hand. Of course it's also possible that he just got tired of putting up with their bullshit and did genuinely decide to leave of his own accord to start his own venture. Whatever the reasons behind it, I think it's pretty clear that Squenix does want to re-evaluate how they approach AAA development so they can do it in a way that doesn't just lose money over and over.

While I do think that FFXV was received well despite the fairly significant problems it has, I think it's had to say whether Squenix actually made money on it. A game in development for 10 years that also has a free beat 'em up tie-in game and an animated movie along with it had to've cost a small fortune just to keep staff on for.

I don't know if I buy it Patridge... because Square Enix produced The Quiet Man.

Maybe the biggest dumpster fire since Too Human, haha. I watched some of the Easy Allies guys stream the whole thing and even that was a serious struggle to get through, despite them cracking jokes along the playthrough and reading a chat alongside it... it was SO boring and bizarre I don't know how the product was made. Even deaf people are coming out slamming on it and upset with its depiction of that. Then the irony is, once you beat it, you unlock sound and subtitles... but the writing is even WORSE! Kind of hilarious.

Square Enix Europe has been pretty terrible over the years but it's hard to say if that's by the hands of the Japanese side or not. The marketing behind Shadow of the Tomb Raider (become the Tomb Raider... for the third time... in a reboot trilogy!) this last year or so and Mankind Divided were both pretty bad, not to mention MD's debacle with its ridiculous pre-order variants that got a lot of headlines for being way too much.

Luminous Engine seems like a huge failure and waste of time when KH3 and other projects have moved over to Unreal. I'm not even sure if the Luminous studio are using their own engine at this point.

We're coming up to about 4 years in June since FF7R was announced in 2015. Production on it was completely scrapped at one point and pulled from one studio to another. Probably another decade or two on this one and let's not forget, they are going with episodic releases. Are you guys ready for them to drag FF7R out for the rest of our lives? Please be excited.

It seemed like they barely promoted Nier Automata and Octopath Traveler, which turned out to be some nice big surprises. I wish they'd have a little more faith in their non-AAA products, the vibe I get is that they simply don't care and it's almost an accident these were successful. The fans came through on these.

They've seriously got like no big game designers/directors left at this point. The Belts Wizard Nomura is steering the ship somehow and seems invincible over there.

I've got some serious beef with Square Enix and really can't boil up any faith in them. So many great IP's under their wing... so many terrible decisions and project management. :?

Think the thread started on censorship but we're now on bashing Square. Let's start with that. I got FF15 day 1 and plat it on ps4. The story started okay and then turned into a huge mess. After I plat the game I sold it having no desires to revisit it. But atleast I finished the game, FF13 I quit because I couldn't stand listening to Hope. So I did have some fun with FF15, but the story was terrible and required watching outside material to even know what was happening. But I have been tempted to get Hitman 2 on PC. Don't think Square ruined that series yet.

But on the whole censorship debacle. If you want AO visual novels/games, make a gog account. That's their current only safe heaven with Steam going back and forth on it. Console wise I have a PS4 and Switch for the exclusives. Microsoft doesn't know what that means and also puts everything on PC. So sold my X and built a PC, so I get Xbox "exclusives" and Total War on one platform. PS4 is still my primary system for JRPGs, I might invest in some on gog since there's some series on there that were only released on psp/vita. But I don't see this Nintendo being less censored then Sony. I mean not long ago Nintendo stirred up their community by censoring Xenoblade Chronicles X.

With Square the Hardcore fans are going to know about Stuff like Neir Automata (one of my favorite games this gen) and Octopath (which I still need to pick up)

I really like the new Tomb Raider series I have Definitive and Rise on PS4 and I'll grab Shadow on Xbox After a price drop.

I don't however have any interest in any Final Fantasy games. I hear XIII got a pretty neat patch for XBOX One X But I don't recall it being ya know GOOD. 3D final fantasy is of no interest to me either no matter how pretty 15 is. Not a Kingdom hearts fan either, Replace Goofy and Donald with Cable and Deadpool then maybe we'll talk.

I'm interested in the Tokyo RPG factory games. I am Setsuna is supposed to be amazing and I hear ehhh things about the other one.

That's not even getting into Dragon Quest which I haven't played since Nintendo power was giving the first game away.

Oh and a few pages back Catherine Full body came up. Seems it's going to be as uncensored as a game of this type can be.
