IO Interactive actually broke off from Square within the last year or something, so Square wasn't involved with the new 2 release. Doesn't sound like they met Square's usual insane expectations for Western studios but, to give them some grace it worked out with IO being able to retain their own IP thankfully.

Looks like Warner Bros published 2.
IO Interactive confirmed shortly after the split that all profits from 2016's Hitman would from that point go directly to the studio.[78] Subsequently, in August that year, the studio confirmed that another Hitman game was in development.[79] In April 2018, IO Interactive partnered with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment to distribute a Definitive Edition of 2016's Hitman, which was released in the following month.[80][81] In June 2018, IO Interactive announced Hitman 2.[82] Unlike 2016's Hitman, Hitman 2 does not feature an episodic release format.[83] Published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Hitman 2 was released in November that year.[84]

I mean The Quiet Man honestly seems like another thing that they had put too much faith in the weird ambition of its creation and just wanted SOMETHING to shove out the door and distance themselves from this thing. The Quiet Man is many things, but "well marketed" or AAA-quality funding were things it clearly did not have (and neither would've saved it)

Xeogred: I don't keep up on gaming drama anymore, kind of pissed me off so I try and avoid it. If the game is hated, it doesn't appear people in here think the same. The way I got away from detesting Square over how they've handled FF is to just not think of then as FF games anymore. They're just games using the name branding to sell them, but aren't really them despite using similar terms for spells and some items. FF7 was different, FF8 was just all around off the rails, and FF9 came off as a final hurrah and apology. FF10 and since went into this weird valley of being non-FF, and that's not even going into the MMOs. I actually liked FF13 because with the time I could invest I appreciated it being linear. FF15 is a 100GB nightmare so I had no interest in buying it on PC, but the Pocket version taking out a lot of the fluff and streamlining it leaving the story intact I am digging that, as I am with the live combat. I will agree it's sad how they screw up so hard core and drag out, scrap and restart projects under the FF name now that it is like a story in debt management at its worst.

And I thought FF13 got the trilogy and other spinoffs because of debt losses around multiple scrapped projects and restarts that dragged the game out for years longer than intended in development also around that crystal engine it used too. Maybe I'd hate on FF15 if I put $60 into it and not $16, and if it was the huge bloated excuse for the primary game but I'm playing the pocket one. Pocket I read other than the odd art direction is the better one as you get the story condensed and refined, the bloat and weird situations of the full removed or minimized, so perhaps it's a less painful thing. I don't hate it, and I'm into the 4th chapter.

I think it is true Square is looking to re-evaluate their business model, and because of FF13/15 and their deep expenses which probably is why FF15 Pocket exists, it was why you see what their efforts have been in the last year or so. They're now strongly focusing for better or worse on the mobile market, even to the tune of doing HD efforts on their back library to stuff onto things like the upcoming FF12 HD on download/physical for Switch and other things like I Am Setuna, Lost Sphear, and Octopath Traveler. But they're also making other old games, or remaking them for mobile/tablet stuff, plus their newer IP like Chaos Rings trilogy on that format too. They don't even cut much for breaks on price, one of the most expensive peddlers of gaming media on mobile and the most stingy on sales too. They said a great deal of their profit now comes from this, so I see them expanding more in that direction as they're kind of incompetent for grand scale efforts as they lose years and millions in losses doing them it seems since the PS3 era.

I think the problem with modern gaming is that is slowly turning into a monetizing scheme resembling an entertainment product, than an entertainment product with a monetizing scheme. As it slowly succumbs to games as a service, always online, multiplayer only environment.

Not to mention an assortment other anti-consumer issues, a creative copy-cat mentality on the high end, and increasing costs, of both development and game price, since buying a 'complete' game these days with all DLC on launch may cost you up to $100 and that's if you don't have to buy it again the next year when the definitive edition comes out.

I think the Sony censorship issue is a separate thing all by itself, though this may bleed out on other games soon (Catherine: Full Body seems to have taken a hit) most games so far are VN's better played fully uncensored on PC anyway (since the Switch versions are also censored anyway, just less so).

I don't know if this move was politically motivated by Sony's western branch as some people theorize, or if is simply just another side-effect of the typical bout of arrogance that hit Sony as the dominant console manufacturer at this time, but is only going to end up hurting them at the end.

Whatever the reason Sony made the moves that it did I’m glad.

The last thing I need is to sit down on the couch with my five year old nephew, hit up the PSN store to see what kind of kids games they have, and then run into a suggestive thumbnail of a game and have to be put in such an awkward position.

That’s just me man.

On the PC is fine. The P in PC is personal. But something like a console hooked up to a TV and having family over and stuff. It’ll just feel awkward.

I guess I'm not seeing the problem. If you want the "moar pornz" version of the game, play the PC version. It will sit well next to your patched copy of Nude Raider.

Consoles have always aimed to be a bit more family friendly (at least as far as sexuality is concerned). There are exceptions of course, but as others have said, the concern here seems to be more around potential depictions of under-aged girls.... Good on Sony for potentially avoiding more unnecessary controversy.
