If you want a modern RPG, check out Horizon Zero Dawn. My sweetheart has been playing for the last two weeks, and she can’t get enough of it. Looks like a good western RPG. Reminds me of a Fallout or Elder Scrolls game that’s not overburdened with too much pre-established canon.

I can’t elaborate on it much, because I’m purely a retro gamer.

When I want something to play, I dust off my Sega Genesis. Have you played Light Crusader? Fantastic iso RPG by Treasure. I don’t even like RPGs, but I like Light Crusader on its own merits. Great music, satisfying combat, and interesting puzzles make this a stand out Action RPG.

S.C.A.T. is a fun game with some nice tunes. If you liked Battle Tycoon on SFC you should play the game that came before it, Flash Hiders, on PC Engine Super CD.

SCAT is also pretty up there in price.

I have Light Crusader but it doesn't save....but I have an Everdrive soo....

My PS3 doubles as my PS1 I'm sure there are some PS1 era RPGs I missed out on.

Doesn’t save? It’s supposed to. What’s wrong with your cartridge?

If you don't mind playing PC games, I highly recommend Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. A meaty FPS/RPG hybrid mix that is an absolute blast. I would also recommend maybe going into a game like Dragon Quest Builders, which is a very beefy Action RPG with building elements. The story mode in the game keeps you on task and always moving forward, but allows for creativity if you are into it (I moved through the story in a hodge-podge slapdash fashion and did just fine).

I don't mind PC games but I don't have a PC ATM. I'm building a MAME PC in the near future though.
