I'd argue that most of these glossy 20-years-after-the-fact remakes, while good, are too far removed from the spirit of the original to be considered the "definitive" edition.

In most all cases the definitive version of a game is simply the original (Super Mario Bros. on NES) or a very good port that quickly followed - and improved upon - the original (Contra on NES, Ys Book I & II on PCE). But a reboot way down the line, like Final Fantasy IV on DS, for instance? Nah, those are more like complete reimaginings.

As someone who absolutely adores Wonder Boy 3, I can assure you that that is absolutely not the case with this one. It's truly fantastic and they've made very minimal changes to the core game, all of which are big improvements (other than the obvious audiovisual differences, the ones I can think of are adding a save feature, swapping the thunder sword into a ring power up (no more pointless swapping to a weak weapon) and removing the charm point requirement to buy weapons (which was mainly just confusing and added nothing to the game).

That said, I think the obvious reason that the SMS version of WB3 is the definitive one compared to Dragon's Curse is because it's the one called 'Wonder Boy'.

They changed charm stones to let you teleport back to town from anywhere outside of boss fights in the GG version, did they keep that or remove them completely?

I agree that despite the new coat of paint, the remake of Dragon's Trap is remarkably true to the original game. Even the controls feel the same. Given that you can swap back to the original graphics on the fly, well... yeah, I'd say it's the definitive version at this point.

I probably would have picked that version, but I don’t have a system that will play it. So, I just fell back on the SMS version. <shrug>

Nothing wrong with that! The remake is really faithful to the SMS version. It's actually quite remarkable how well the core gameplay has aged. The remake isn't too much different from those graphical facelifts that you can apply in a few emulators.

Exactly. And you can switch to the old music and graphics at any time with a single button press. I played and own the original on SMS but the remake is no doubt the definitive edition. Keeps all the charm and even adds to it with the updated art style and if you bought the Nicalis Switch version you get that classic claymation box art.

I wish I could talk about this in the SMT topic but seems I'm the only one who likes SMT/Persona.

Anyway, I finished Digimon Cyber Sleuth Hackers Memory. Late last year finished the first game. This is a sequel that is parallel to the first game. You do kinda need to play the first. Not a lot I can say I have not said before. I don't care about Digimon. Why I enjoy these is they are Persona meets SMT. Lighter more colorful end of Persona with modern day Tokyo (that also kinda reminds me of Tokyo Mirage Sessions in aesthetics). OST in these games is solid. Really enjoyable games. They are pretty cheap. First is less than 20 bucks and the second is around 25 bucks new these days. 2 games for less than a full priced game. Greatly enjoyed them. :D

I love MegaTen, I just have next to no interest in anything "in the series" made after Okada Kouji left Atlus. I'd probably rather gag myself than play/talk about Persona 3/4/5, or (shudder) #FE.

They added secret harder bonus areas for each transformation which have a charm stone as the reward. When you get all of them you can exchange them for the best sword in the game, which is new to replace the Thunder Sword (the one that created blocks) as that is now a power up instead of a weapon.
