DOOM

One of my all time favorites and most influential games... hence the avatar. I like to run through this once a year. Notice I didn't say "Ultimate" Doom because I played through the original 3 episodes:

Knee Deep In The Dead
Shores of Hell
Inferno

I knocked out the original 24 missions, and I believe I hit 2 of the secret exits for 26 missions completed.

Most here probably know this, but a fourth episode, Thy Flesh Consumed, was eventually released (roughly 18 months later) as part of Ultimate Doom for a big box retail push. These are crazy tough. E4M1 & M2 have to be completed perfect and really require you to get the secrets to survive. They're fun for a masochist :lol:

. You'll need a FAQ handy. On my list for 2018 to finish these, but not in a huge rush. Will upgrade my list to "Ultimate" Doom when I do.

Overall, I enjoyed the 360 port. I played with head phones on and lights out. 25 years later... still got a few jump scares out of me!

I love double dragon 3, it is actually quite possibly my favorite double dragon game. I do agree the last boss is a pain in the ass, the 2 mummies are easy but boring to fight (14 jump kicks each to kill) but the final boss is very difficult and has a ton of health. Outside of that I think the game has a ton of fun moves to pull off and I really liked being able to switch to different characters. This should probably go in the unpopular opinion thread though since most people really hate this game.

I know! I’ve just been strangely addicted to this series for some reason recently. I blame Sarge’s TR and going down the rabbit hole on HG101’s Double Dragon articles.

I can see it’s appeal. I just found it not very fun. I think Sarge, our resident beat em up expert also really like it; so, you’re not alone in your opinion. I just found it a lot less compelling than its NES predecessor (but still way better than the awful arcade version).

253. Mega Man: Super fighting robots (SFR)

I just can't stop playing mega man games, it is actually surprising how many original fan mega man games and rom hacks exist relative to other classic franchises. The quality of all of the ones I have played so far is very good, and SFR is no exception.

The storyline is that proto-man is tired of being used as a tool for humans, so he assembles a team of 8 robots and starts a rebellion to overthrow the humans. Dr. Light and Mega Man are shocked and saddened as to why protoman would go down such a dark path and mega man sets out to stop the robot rebellion and smack some sense into his brother.

SFR follows the set up of any traditional mega man game, there are 8 robot masters, each with a weakness and a special weapon and when you beat all of them you are taken to a multi-stage final level that concludes with an epic battle with protoman...or is there something more sinister behind his actions

Mega Man plays exactly how you would expect him to play, he has his standard buster, charge shot, slide, rush coil, rush jet, access to BEAT if you find all the letters and a shop where you can go in between levels to buy items. The shop is a little different in this game since you can buy armor upgrades that enhance mega mans defense, attack, movespeed, charge speed and more. When the whole set is collected Mega Man is stronger, faster, takes less damage, does not auto die when he touches spikes, he even jumps out of pits if you fall in with full health. On top of all this, item pick ups give you a much larger boost than normal.

Because of all of these upgrades SFR is not as hard as some of the other games in the series. It starts out pretty difficult but there are far more bolts laid around in this game than in your average mega man game, a few failed attempts at a level will likely give you enough bolts to start buying the armor upgrades and stocking up on E tanks (you can carry 9) which will help make this game a much easier experience. This is perfect for mega man fans who are looking for a slightly easier experience, of course if you are a hardcore mega man fan you can just ignore the upgrades and the game will be considerably more difficult.

Overall SFR is a solid game, it does not reinvent the wheel but if this game was released on the NES it would have fit right it, the level and boss designs are good, many of the weapons are fun to use, and the difficulty is adjustable on the fly depending on how you want to play it.

I beat Mischief Makers on the Nintendo 64 this evening!

Back in my early Backlogging days, I lived near one of the best hole-in-the-wall local video game stores I have ever been into. The placed smelled of cigarettes, the owner was a little gruff and it was hard to find the good stuff, but he had some of the best stuff I have ever seen and the prices were utterly outstanding. I used to walk out of there with five or fix hard to find games every single time I walked in there. Initially, that is how I ballooned my Backlog. After a while, I controlled my urges and only went there after beating so many games. Well, one trip, I found a bunch of games and one of them was Mischief Makers. I was just learning about the company Treasure at the time. Since I found Mischief Makers and Gunstar Heroes at the same time, I decided to dive head first into Treasure games.

Treasure games are usually know for their frantic and frenetic pace along with boss battle after boss battle. They are refined arcade action games with a gimmick that they twist on throughout the entirety of the game. They are not know for story or character, which is funny considering the cut scenes are my favorite part of Mischief Makers. After every world, you have a cutscene between the two characters and it is absolutely hilarious. Seeing Marina throw the Professor and then the Professor get kidnap again is fantastic! The hook in the game is that you can grab onto anything. For some levels, it is really unique and you get that beautiful light bulb moment. Everything clicks and everything works perfectly because you know exactly what to do.

Other levels, you are completely lost as the game gives very little direction. You need a guide just to figure out some bosses and levels. I like the two main characters, but the enemies and bosses are very annoying. There is way too much dialogue for a Treasure game. Also, the controls take some getting used too. It takes a while to do exactly what you want to do and that leads to some frustration.

Overall, I would say Mischief Makers is a mix bag. For a Treasure game, it is on the relatively easy side once you know what to do. The two final bosses are the only ones that gave me trouble. It's fun to play and watch the cut scenes, but it can also be a little annoying and somewhat tedious at times. Compared to other Treasure games, I feel like it is a lesser tier game, but it is still a good one overall that is very unique.

I played a lot of games today but I want to talk about Super Mario Bros.

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I think that the original super mario bros is by far the most over rated game of all time. Now don't get me wrong, I respect what it did for gaming as a whole and completely appreciate what a significant game it is, but in the grand scheme of things I just don't think the game is that great and it is perhaps the only mario game that I really don't enjoy.

I have not played the game in years, like probably over 10 years if not longer, it is the only mario game that I do not consistently replay, but I decided to play it tonight just to see if my feelings have changed and they did not.

I can't even really explain why, I recently played through the lost levels and loved it, but there is something about the original that just rubs me the wrong way and I just genuinely don't enjoy any part of it. I like to think that platformers have evolved so much that the simplicity of the game may bore me, but I don't think thats it, even as a kid I was pretty lukewarm on the game and did not fall in love with Mario until Super Mario 2, perhaps the most under rated game of all time.

Am I alone here? Does anyone else feel the same way or am I completely alone?

Hmm, well that's weird... I was going to come in and say I recommend giving the All Stars SNES version of SMB1 a shot but I guess that's what you played? I grew up on SMB1 NES but I really prefer the All Stars version now, it's smoother and looks cool. SMB2-SMB3 I can go either way.

I have never played the NES Lost Levels. In fact I don't think I've even seen footage of it until a few weeks back when I caught a stream of it and to my surprise, it has unique new graphics for some levels you don't see in All Stars Lost Levels. Makes me kind of curious about giving the NES original a look someday.

Like... it's nothing ground breaking, but I don't think those ground graphics or mushrooms/bushes in the background ever appear in the original SMB1.

Super Mario Bros. is a phenomenal game, so far ahead of other platformers of its era it's almost comical. Like The Legend of Zelda or Metroid, it's one of those games whose roots can be traced, but it's still so revolutionary it feels like it came "out of nowhere."

Is is perfect? Nah. It's probably "too long" (20 levels woulda be fine) and the difficulty is wonky. The sequels are better, of course. Whatevs. Still a 10/10 experience I can pop in anytime.

I am proud to announce that I have finally beaten a Dragon Quest and it clicked pretty good. I have sampled some of the earlier games and even the ports, like the GB version of 1-2, or the SFC version of 3, but they never really pulled me in due to not a lot of character/story. DQ5 finally had a cool premise and some fun characters, though from what I'm hearing from some folks I think I'm going to like some of the other games even more. I've also been pretty excited to get DQ11, since it's amazing seeing such a gorgeous new Toriyama styled world fully fleshed out that isn't Dragon Ball. But I wanted to beat at least one old one first, I think that was even a goal I set this year. Mission accomplished!

I really enjoyed the DS engine for this, even though I'm typically more for pixels. I'm kind of annoyed to see DQ6 goes for a steep price, but I might buckle down and try to get it someday... I have DQ4 DS and am excited to play that one, so it'd be nice to have that trilogy on the DS. I also own DQ8 on PS2. So, 4, 8, and 11 are the next few I plan to tackle. I could also see myself maybe getting more out of the old ones now. I went in roundabout ways to conquer the Final Fantasy games too, so maybe that'll happen again. I've beaten FF1-10 in some form/port, maybe I can someday say that about DQ now that I think I finally get it and can see these growing on me. I don't see them rivaling my love for FF, since that franchise has Uematsu, sci-fi, more serious plots, and my nostalgia... but DQ5 was so JOLLY with a lot of cool mechanics and a great world, I'm excited to sink into more of these now.
