2018 Gaming Goals and Resolutions

So, the guy who usually does these kind of threads (darsparx) hasn't visited since the summer and I have been enjoying/thinking about this thread for the past couple of days. So, in his absence, it is time to make our Gaming Goals and Resolutions for the year of 2018! Let's make 2018 our best year of gaming ever!!

My main goal of 2018 is to get my Unfinished Count under 50. I am currently sitting at 73 Unfinished Games. The past two years, I have made progress of somewhere in the 20s. So, as long as I make progress of over 24, then I should make my goal. I don't think I'll reach it until the end of the year, but it is a good long term goal.

With that in mind, I also like to make console specific goals. So, I will have about 10 goals to achieve for each year. I have had some in mind and it is time to finalize them.

2018 Gaming Goals and Resolution
Main Goal = Get My Unfinished Count Under 60
NES = Beat Dragon Warrior IV
GEN = Beat Mega Man: The Wily Wars
SNES = Beat Secret of Evermore
N64 = Beat Bomberman Hero
SDC = Beat Grandia II
PS1 = Do a One Sitting Speedrun of Suikoden
PS2 = Beat Test Drive: Eve of Destruction
GCN = Complete Pikmin
XBOX = Beat Shattered Union

So, most of my goals are just beating regular games. I need to get back on the Dragon Warrior wagon after taking almost two years off. Mega Man and Evermore are super high on my list. Bomberman should be easy with my change of actually playing games. I beat Grandia II on the PS2, but I want to play the DC Version. And Test Drive & Shattered Union are for friends of mine.

Pikmin is for my replay game of the year. I beat it recently, but I want to get the endings and do the Challenge Mode.

And Suikoden will be my Master Run. I hope to sit down and beat Suikoden in one sitting and try to do it as quickly as I can. I've beaten it before and I really want to replay it. I've heard its only like a 25 hour game, so it seems doable. LONG, but doable.

So, those are my Goals and Resolutions. Write them down here and see if you can actually accomplish them in the following year.

Happy Gaming in 2018!

Great resolutions by the way! Here are mine.

1. Get one person to invest some time to go down the rabbit hole and play together in vanilla Everquest so we can explore the world and experience it in a natural way.

2. Introduce my daughter to a video game she can play herself (she Will be 3).

3. Complete my virtual arcade in New Retro Arcade: Neon.

4. Introduce shenmue to 1 person who has never played it.

5. Make a video series or stream about Myst

6. Get 10 strangers to come out of their comfort zones and socialize in a multiplayer game of any type.

A hefty task that isn't really about beating games, but more about introducing people to new things and new experiences that put the fun back into games.

Yeah it looks and sounds amazing.

My SNES bias is sinking the ship though... need to give the Genesis a little more love and think of some ideas. But my last batch of roms might be a good list to work with:

- Advanced Busterhawk Greylancer
- Crusader of Centy
- Dynamite Headdy
- Gaiares
- Gunstar Heroes
- Gynoug
- High Seas Havoc
- Jewel Master
- Landstalker
- Mega Man Wily Wars
- Pulseman

I've been on a serious Bemani kick lately so that's effecting a lot of my goals:

1) Get back into Dance Dance Revolution, so I can play hard songs without being totally out of breath
2) Get better at Beatmania IIDX; I'd like to be able to play level 10 songs by the end of the year, but I don't know if that's a realistic goal (it's a SLOOOOW game to progress in, I'm confident with most 5s and can clear some 6s)
3) Get a fancy DJDao IIDX controller (I'm eyeing the Platinum Edition Evolution... or maybe the FP7)
4) Play through at least one Dragon Quest spinoff
5) Play through Castlevania: The Arcade and Alien vs Predator in the arcade (because my local arcade has both and that's amazing)
6) Shrink the backlog!

Beating games:

1. Beat every game I recieved as a Christmas or birthday present in 2017.
I have a bad habit of leaving games unbeaten for years, and lately I've been feeling guilty about presents people have bought me being left unplayed for years on end. Time to stop that trend I reckon!

2. Beat at least 1/3rd of unbeaten games I recieved as Christmas/Birthday presents prior to 2017.
As with the above, this is to make a dent in the backlog of games I recieved as gifts. There are currently 35 games on the list, so I'd want to finish at least 12.

3. Beat at least 1/3rd of games I've purchased at the London Retro Game Market to date.
This is another mission to justify my continued patronage of this event. I've got lots of great games at this event but beaten very few of them. Now is the time to do something about that. There are 34 games on this list so far, so for now my target would be to beat 12 of them (plus 1/3rd of any I buy this year).

4. Beat all the games I was challenged to beat in my 'challenge me' thread.
This hasn't been forgotten, and I plan to try and make this a regular goal next year too. This is likely to be higher priority than some of the other ones on this list - if I can finish one game a month I should get through them all.

5. Participate in every Together Retro month to some extent.
I love Together Retro, let's not let it die. My mission would be to try and participate every month with at least one game, even if the rules have to be bent a little bit. For example, if we get 'PC RPGs' or something, then I'll play a console port of one. P.S. I think everyone should have this as one of their goals personally ;)

6. Beat one unbeaten game in every series I own at least 2 unbeaten games in.
This is another one to justify continuing to spend money on these series - why buy more Fire Emblem games when I have so many unfinished already? My goal is to beat one game in each series where I have multiple entries unbeaten. As of today, that list is:
- Age of Empires
- Atelier
- Danganronpa
- Devil May Cry
- Donkey Kong Country
- Dragon Quest
- Earthbound
- Final Fantasy
- Fire Emblem
- Harvest Moon
- Kingdom Hearts
- The Legend of Zelda
- Mario & Luigi
- Mario Golf
- Metal Gear Solid
- Rayman
- Resident Evil
- Shinobi
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Super Mario Bros.
- Valkyria Chronicles
- Wave Race
- Wonder Boy
- Ys
- Zero Escape

As you can see, my games to beat list is long this year, so I don't necessarily expect I'll accomplish all of these. But if I can make a dent in it I'll be very happy.

Buying games:
1. Beat 2 games to buy 1 new unbeaten game
This is a slightly less ambitious version of last years objective of 'beat 3 to buy 1'. I've also added 'unbeaten' as a requirement, so that the 2nd objective on this 'buying games' list doesn't clash with it.

2. Acquire 1 physical copy of a game I own on Virtual Console per month
I'm on a mission to try and get as many of the digital games I own in physical form as possible/affordable. This will help me work towards that, and allows for me to adjust spending for a cheap or pricy game as desired each month. Obviously, if I don't have the money that month, I'll skip this one, I'm not going to force myself to spend money I don't have!

3. Finish my collection of Rare titles for N64
I got Conker's Bad Fir Day for Christmas, so the priciest obstacle was removed from this list. I only need these games to finish the set now: Goldeneye, Killer Instinct Gold, Mickey's Speedway USA.

4. Acquire at least 3 more games towards my collection of games by Treasure.
I need a lot more games in this set than the Rareware set, and they're pricier too on average. 3 games shouldn't be too bad as I still need some cheap ones too.
Game options: Gunstar Heroes, Light Crusader, Alien Soldier, Radiant Silvergun, Silhouette Mirage, Rakugaki Showtime, Sin & Punishment, Wario World, Gunstar Future Heroes, Guardian Heroes Advance

Other:
1. Upgrade at least 1 of my consoles, preferably 2.
This could be buying a GBA SP AGS101 model, RGB modding my PC Engine, or region modding another system.

1 - Finish the games I already have! At a minimum I want to see the ending screens for these 10 games:

- Mario Odyssey
- Super Mario World
- Metroid: Samus Returns
- Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together
- Donkey Kong Country Returns
- Star Ocean: Til the End of Time
- Zelda: Link's Awakening
- Cave Story
- Bayonetta
- Yakuza Kiwami

When/if I clear these, I'll follow up with another list of 10 to clear.

2 - Stop buying so many games.

There's a few games I know I am going to buy like the Bayonetta Switch Collection, Megaman 11, The Street Fighter Legacy collection. But really, the amount of game purchases should be below 10 or 15.

Damn AJ, bringing the FIRE! And here I thought my goals were ambitious. You have some work ahead of you and I wish you the best.

I will also agree with you on the Together Retro. I don't think I will be participating in all of them as I know this forum and some obscure topics are coming, but I will be watching and I will do my best to participate. I changed the way I play games, so I should be more wide open than ever in actually joining in.

Those are some musts and really good games. Mystic Quest isn't that bad. Just don't expect a deep story and be prepared for repetitive battles. The others are simply fantastic RPG's. And Gunstar Heroes is a classic!

Super Mario World is my favorite 2D Mario game and Tactics Ogre is a great SRPG. You got a varied list there, so hopefully it should keep you interested well into 2018.

Ex's tentative 2018 gamin' goals:

1. Finish Xenoblade Chronicles.

2. Beat Final Fantasy VIII.

3. Beat Grandia.

4. Beat an Infinity Engine WRPG.

5. Beat Dark Souls.

6. Beat three Dreamcast games.

7. Beat three OG Xbox games.

8. Beat three PS2 games.

9. Beat three GameCube games.

10. Beat Aquanaut's Holiday: Hidden Memories (PS3).

My list is all about beating games, kinda one dimensional I know. :| Trying to encourage myself to play more sixth gen stuff next year, as I didn't touch that gen much in 2017. I don't have any ambitions as far as acquiring new gaming hardware, or selling games off, or what have you. At most I may buy a Switch for myself come Christmas 2018. That's no goal though. Depends on what Nintendo cranks out for it in 2018.
