April update from me:

alienjesus wrote:Beating games:

1. Beat every game I recieved as a Christmas or birthday present in 2017.
Currently beaten: 4/13
List so far:
1. Nier Automata
2. Layton's Mystery Journey
3. Dynamite Cop
4. Mega Man 7

Decent progress, working on Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle now.

2. Beat (or sell on) at least 1/3rd of unbeaten games I recieved as Christmas/Birthday presents prior to 2017.
Current progress: 4/12
List so far:
1. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros.
2. The Legend of Zelda
3. Age of Empires: The Age of Kings (sold)
4. Shinobi X

On track for this one so far as well - one per month so far!

3. Beat at least 1/3rd of games I've purchased at the London Retro Game Market to date.
Currently beaten: 5/12
List so far:
1. Little Nemo: The Dream Master
2. Legacy of the Wizard
3. Rhyme Rider Kerorican
4. Sonic Advance 3
5. Super Adventure Island

No progress on this one this month, but I plan to knock out a few during the summer challenge.

4. Beat all the games I was challenged to beat in my 'challenge me' thread.
Currently beaten: 3/14

1. Dynamite Cop (Ack)
2. Rhythm Tengoku (Dunpeal)
3. Portal 2

Some progress on this one too - and I plan to take on a bunch of these for the summer challenge too!

5. Participate in every Together Retro month to some extent.
So far:
January (Licensed Platformers): I beat Little Nemo, Batman and Mickey's Wild Adventure
February (Final Fantasy Spin-offs): I tried Kingdom Hearts and didn't like it, so I sold all the games in the series I owned.
March (80s Ladies Night): I beat Legacy of the Wizard, The Legend of Zelda and Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap. I've also started, but not finished Earthbound Beginnings.

April: I beat Shinobi X for Saturn and have started but not finished Wing Commander III for 3DO.

6. Beat one unbeaten game in every series I own at least 2 unbeaten games in.
List to beat + comments:
- Atelier
- Danganronpa
- Devil May Cry
- Donkey Kong Country
- Dragon Quest
- Earthbound - In progress!
- Final Fantasy
- Fire Emblem
- Harvest Moon
- The Legend of Zelda - Done!
- Mario & Luigi - Done!
- Mario Golf
- Metal Gear Solid
- Rayman
- Resident Evil
- Shinobi
- Sonic the Hedgehog - Done!
- Super Mario Bros.
- Valkyria Chronicles
- Wave Race
- Wonder Boy - Done!
- Ys
- Zero Escape[/i]

Buying games:
1. Beat 2 games to buy 1 new unbeaten game
I haven't worked out the numbers, but I think I've bought too much for this so far. Gonna have to catch up on beating stuff!

2. Acquire 1 physical copy of a game I own on Virtual Console per month. These won't count towards rule 1 unless they're still unbeaten.
Jan: Winds of Thunder, Feb: Ufouria: The Saga. March & April: Donkey Kong Country 2 & Gunstar Heroes.

3. Finish my collection of Rare titles for N64
2/3 purchased - picked up GoldenEye 007 and Killer Instinct Gold, so the last one I need now is Mickey's Speedway USA.

4. Acquire at least 3 more games towards my collection of games by Treasure.
1 game acquired so far in the form of Gunstar Heroes for Mega Drive.

Other:
1. Upgrade at least 1 of my consoles, preferably 2.
No progress, this will likely be later in the year

3. Beat 3 games in my PS3 backlog.
4. Don't ask for video games as Christmas presents unless completing 1-3.
5. Obtain some flash carts.
6. Go easy on the Nintendo Switch purchases.

This year's theme is going to be about managing my backlog. Most of my PlayStation games are RPGs so I gotta keep the numbers low to be realistic. I also need to try not to go hog wild on Switch purchases. I did pretty good this year at 4 physical games and 2 digital. I think I want to keep the total under 10 but I'm not putting a hard limit on it. That one is going to be hard as my Switch wishlist is rapidly growing.

I'm doing my first quarter update a bit late because I had nothing to show for it. But now I do!

I'm changing up #1-3 because I bought a PS4 Pro and a bunch of games. I'm just going to say that I need to beat 8 PlayStation games in my backlog with at least 1 from each system. I'm already one in and soon to have a 2nd.

#5 is done for now. I bought Everdrives for NES, SNES, and Genesis. I've been thinking about selling off my retro cartridges for a while now. It has been pretty much impossible to find good local deals on those games for several years. Prices on the games I was interested in keep climbing and I just don't have the cash to keep collecting them along with current gen stuff. So I sold off almost all my NES, SNES, Genesis, and Master System games to fund the flash carts and other purchases. I kept the SNES games that aren't compatible with the Everdrive. That leaves me with one Super-FX SNES game on my wishlist to get. There is a chance that I might get a Turbo Everdrive if the Polymega releases this year (and doesn't suck). I'm holding off on the N64 Everdrive because I want the expensive one that doesn't require you to reset when you save. My meager N64 collection would not fund that purchase. The N64 was also the first console that I purchased with my own money so it will be hard to let go of some of those games.

I'm doing well on #6. I've only purchased one Switch game this year. Mostly because Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has kept me busy. I shifted a lot of games on my Switch wishlist to my PS4 wishlist. If the game supports 4K and/or HDR, then I will likely get it on the PS4 instead of the Switch. I'm curious to see what my Switch wishlist looks like after E3 though.

- Played Dragon Quest III (SFC) and while gorgeous to look at, it had no characters/story... so no spark really caught my interest. I'll try another one some other time.

- Beat Gun Hazard, simply put this is my RetroGOTY so far.

- Beat Brain Lord, I have many issues with this one but otherwise I'm glad I played it.

- Beat Metroid 2 FINALLY with the power of a color hack and it was amazing, loved it.

With my New Year Cookie Marathon completed, it is time to dive head first into beating my Goals and Resolutions.

A couple, I will space out between other games and I plan to do the Suikoden one in July, but for now, I am concentrating on these for the time being.

First up, I was able to beat Mega Man: The Wily Wars on the Sega Genesis today.

**EDIT**

I won't do a new post, but just edit this one. Test Drive: Eve of Destruction is now beat.

Going to take a break for just a bit, but I will be playing Grandia II and Suikoden very soon.

5. Mario & Rabbids Kingdom Battle
6. Metroid Samus Returns
7. Mega Man 8

Still on track for this sort of (one of the remaining games is a 100 hour RPG...). I've started Ever Oasis too but it kinda got put on hold whilst I got obsessed with Dragon Quest Builders.

2. Beat (or sell on) at least 1/3rd of unbeaten games I recieved as Christmas/Birthday presents prior to 2017.

2. Legacy of the Wizard
3. Rhyme Rider Kerorican
4. Sonic Advance 3
5. Super Adventure Island
6. Crazy Taxi
7. Ecco: The Tides of Time

2 more added to the list this month - you can't really beat Crazy Taxi but I've put enough time into it to count it.

4. Beat all the games I was challenged to beat in my 'challenge me' thread.
Currently beaten: 4/14

1. Dynamite Cop (Ack)
2. Rhythm Tengoku (Dunpeal)
3. Portal 2 (Noiseredux)
4. Shinobi (Gunstar Green)
5. Ecco: The Tides of Time (KeyGlyph)

Beat one new game on this list this month, and have 4 more of them on my summer list (Jet Set Radio Future, ActRaiser, Fire Emblem 6, Shenmue 2)

5. Participate in every Together Retro month to some extent.

May: I didn't play this month, so I guess I failed this challenge, but I'll try to join in other months this year!
June: Advance Guardian Heroes and Alien Storm

July's plan is to play some Teleroboxer, Vertical Force and/or Golf, although I don't know that I'll have enough time to beat any of them

6. Beat one unbeaten game in every series I own at least 2 unbeaten games in.
List to beat + comments:
- Atelier
- Danganronpa
- Devil May Cry
- Donkey Kong Country
- Dragon Quest
- Earthbound- Done!

- Ys
- Zero Escape[/i]

Buying games:
1. Beat 2 games to buy 1 new unbeaten game
I've lost count of how many I beat vs how many I bought, but it's not 2 to 1. It's still positive progress though!

May: DoReMi Fantasy. June: None so far, got a retro market coming soon I'm saving for. Might look for Air Zonk, Kirby's Adventure or Bomberman 93

3. Finish my collection of Rare titles for N64
2/3 purchased - Still just need Mickey's Speedway USA, which I'll be looking for at the retro market

4. Acquire at least 3 more games towards my collection of games by Treasure.
2 games so far - Gunstar Heroes and Advance Guardian Heroes. I'd quite like the 3rd one to be one of the big ticket items. Radiant Silvergun maybe?

Other:
1. Upgrade at least 1 of my consoles, preferably 2.
Still no progress here, but I'd like to get an AGS101 GBA as one of my options

Recently, I have been hacking away on my Goals. I beat Grandia II on the Sega Dreamcast, which was fantastic.

Today, I spent all day playing the original Suikoden. I got a head start on it on Sunday as I decided to call an audible and change it at the last moment. I decided to do my very own Suikoden Nuzlocke Speedrun Challenge.

Much like Nuzlock Pokemon, Suikoden works exactly the same. If a character dies in any battle, they are dead for good. Also, I did not go out of my way to collect characters. At first, I lost around 5 or 6 characters, but once I got my team going (Pahn, Viktor, Flik, Hero, Kwanda, Cleo), they became super overpowered and I was killing everything rather quickly.

I wasn't engaged as I was with my other speedruns as I don't have as much nostalgia for the original Suikoden. Also, the money grind kind of took me out of it because after each chapter, I had to stop and grind so much money.

But, with my extra time beforehand and starting very early, I was able to finish before midnight. I am very happy for that because I am old and I don't know if I can stay up all night anymore. Unfortunately.

Now, my only goals left are:
- Beat Dragon Warrior IV
- Beat Shattered Union
- Get Under 60 Unifinished Games

**EDIT**
Bomberman Hero is now done!
