What do you regret selling/getting rid of?

by Rocketman Sun Jul 09, 2017 12:02 pm

For me:

Sega Saturn with three controllers + steering wheel + Sega Rally Championship:

Picked this up for $30 at a market when I was about 12 or something. Friends friend told me he would give me $50 for it. I cleaned up the console and put it in a bag. Never saw it again, or the money that was promised...

Sega Mega Drive + Castle of Illusion:

I was a poor kid, so collecting retro games was my way of having something gaming related. At the time the local second hand shop sold Mega Drive I/II games for $5 a pop. I only had Castle of Illusion for the original Mega Drive. It was lost to the sands of time and is no longer in my possession...

Sega Mega Drive II + 10 or so games:

"Sold" this as part of a deal when selling my Sega Saturn. Never saw the money, absolutely regretted selling the console.

Nintendo Gamecube:

Friend borrowed it. Friend somehow "lost" it. Legit. (I have another Gamecube now that I'll never get rid of [Picked it up for $50]... But I move a lot and it's hard to store my shit; I regret that I lost the component cables I had for it!)

Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2, Zelda: Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, Turok: Evolution, Pikmin 2, Tony Hawk Underground, and other assorted Gamecube games:

Friend convinced me to sell them. I was a dumb kid. Local second hand store gave me like $20 fucking dollars. I bought hot chips and chicken with the money afterwards. I still remember that sinking feeling in my stomach as me and my friend ate them with the lukewarm gravy. Possibly my biggest regret.

Gameboy Advance + Pokemon Silver + Golden Sun + Golden Sun 2 + Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2:

Lent it to a "friend". Never saw him again.

Nintendo 64 (Games have disappeared over time, probably stolen...):

Lent (Leant?) it to a friend... Kept asking for it back but never got it back. Turns out he'd done some weird ass shit and taken it apart and like... glued it or frankensteined it into a shoebox. No idea wtf he was trying to do but it was broken. Why didn't he use his own N64?!

Hmmm... I think that about covers most of it. I was a dumb and also poor kid so a lot of those losses hit me hard and I remember them well today. I have a huge collection of Xbox 360 games I've been thinking of selling recently because I've been a bit strapped for cash - but I know it's not ever worth it.

I know I'm not the only one who regrets selling or just generally being careless/dumb with their gaming stuff.

Or maybe I am?
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.

Nothing. I sell nothing, so I regret nothing. Hoarders unite!

You seem to have pretty shitty friends.

I don't feel like I regret much when I look back at stuff I sold. It was always to fund the purchase of something else gaming related that I had more interest in at the time. Yeah I did sell off some pretty rare stuff, like a pretty serious SNES and PS1 RPG collection, but if I can emulate it well enough its ok.

Still sad I trashed hundreds of my gaming magazines a few months ago when I moved.

Sega JVC (now rare)
Sonic CD, Ecco the Dolphin CD, Jurassic Park CD
Sonic the Hedgehoge 2, Sonic & Knuckles, Earthworm Jim, Ristar, some others
2 3-pad controllers, 1 6-pad
-> Mom sold all this in a garage sale for $10 ... back in the 90's. Don't let your parents handle garage sale prices when you're out.

30+ N64 games sold to Gamestop for Armored Core 2, maybe a PS2 memory card too

Sold lots of SNES games over the years, but rebuilt that collection. However I'm pretty upset that my original cart of Super Mario RPG was top notch, the one I got again later is crappy. Literally beat the game once on that cart, went to go back and do the harder stuff with Culex and the save was gone.

Mega Man Legends 2 - I have NO idea what happened to my copy.

I stopped selling stuff during the PS2 era. However, I have started dividing up my shelves and have a low tier set of games, mostly 360, that I could maybe do without. And then some random bad purchases these past few years, like Ninja Gaiden Yaiba Z. That shit doesn't deserve to be alive in my house.

Both my original NES's died growing up. I don't even have one now. I'm not sure what happened to my games either, but that was when I was ultra young so I only had a few games. Bought new copies over the years, Blaster Master, the Zelda's, and Metroid are what I really wanted. I regret not picking up the Mega Man games years ago when I could have easier than today. But I own them a thousand times over with the ports haha. And for the SNES I am a proud owner of Mega Man X2 and X3. But honestly I've never focused too much on a new NES collection, because the hardware is so unstable by this point and top loaders are expensive.

I'm lucky because there weren't places to sell games where I was growing up (nor did I have friends to sell to), so I couldn't make any bad selling decisions haha.

So far I've only sold games that I really didn't enjoy playing, so no regrets about that so far. The closest I've got is that I regret (potentially) losing my copy of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Perhaps my sister has it, but I think it may have been lost in the many moves I've been through. At least there's that 3DS remake coming out so I can get that and finally finish the darn game haha.

I regretted having sold my original Atari 2600 and NES from childhood but I've gotten over it. Everything else I sold I don't really regret because I got rid of it for a reason.

I use to have buyers and sellers regrets all the time. Ask people here.
Now I regret nothing anymore as I'm now moving on and selling all of my stuff.
With retropie and plug n play systems out now I'm all set

The only thing I regret selling is my original boxed, complete in mint condition of the original PC release of Final Fantasy VII. Only because I was massively ripped off though and given £1 trade-in store credit from GameStation, not because I actually regret it.

Other than that, I've re-bought most things I sold and cared about.

Truth be told it was a bit of a job and luck, but I've recovered most I regret selling.

The last hold outs will forever be Aerofighters SNES, Rockman and Cotton on NGPC, and my Turbo Duo and CD/JP CD+US Hucard libraries.

Anything else my interest is shot on it, or had it and got rid of it again. The Duo I'd love back but the price on the system recapped or not is nauseating as are the prices on games. I'd just end up burning most discs and getting an everdrive so it's hardly worth it when I have MagicEngine on PC. Aerofighters and the other two, 100% price alone as they're awful. I'll be able to play them at least on real hardware, have the new NGP SD Kit and Super Everdrive arrives I think tomorrow.

The only reason I lack that stuff was unemployment drove me to sell off a couple thousand games, some few accessories I had, and my systems to around 80-90% of what I had pre 2005. Not saying I wouldn't have sold off a lot still in recent year but that stuff above I'd have kept as it's too much fun. :(
