Exhuminator wrote:My precious little opinions on Lauren's picks (only talking about things I've played):

Castlevania Symphonia of the Night = God tier.
Xenogears = Eh...
Suikoden 2 = Eh...
Shadow Hearts = Amazing JRPG.
Final Fantasy 4 = It's OK.
Chrono Trigger = Great JRPG.
Duke Nukem 3D = Good for its time, don't know about today.
Morrowind = It's OK.
Phantasy Star = If you mean the SMS original, it's amazing.
Prince of Persia (original) = The SNES version is awesome, the DOS version is great.
Super Metroid = God tier.
Soul Blazer = Super fun action-RPG.
Illusion of Gaia = Pretty good action-RPG.
Terranigma = Meh.
Shenmue = It has its ups and downs, but everyone should give it a try.
Vagrant Story = God tier.
DOOM = A true FPS classic, must play for scholarly purposes if nothing else.
Wild Guns = The SNES version is a lot of fun co-op.
Beyond Good & Evil = Meh.
Donkey Kong Country = Fantastic platformer. Best RARE game I've played.
Mega Man X = God tier.
Yoshi’s Island = God tier.

Yeah, I wish that I still had to beat all those games so I could pull together a summer games list as classic as that one. So many must plays...

Here's my list:

1. Kirby's Dream Land
2. Kirby's Dream Land 2
3. Kirby's Dream Land 3
4. Saturn Bomberman
5. Yoshi's Island
6. Donkey Kong Country
7. Donkey Kong Country 2
8. Panzer Dragoon
9. Panzer Dragoon II Zwei
10. Dragon Quest V

--Since I finished all of these as of last week, looks like I win! Hurray! Great work, all. See you next year. (This was the winter games challenge, right?)

No foolin': A classic games challenge doesn't really suit my goals right now, but I might put together a list just to see if I get anywhere with it.

Initial thoughts would include:

-Toe Jam & Earl
-Ganbare Goemon: Karakuri Douchuu
-Ganbare Goemon 2
-Ganbare Goemon: Yukihime Kyuushutsu Emaki (Legend of the Mystical Ninja) --I wanted to play this for together retro, but didn't get to it.
-Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes
--Now the ones Dave will hate--
-Ryu ga Gotoku (Yakuza) --Which I'm almost done with
-Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes II
-Shining Force CD
-Umihara Kawase
-Umihara Kawase Shun

Other games I could consider:

-AD&D Eye of the Beholder
-Ecco the Dolphin
-Any Shinobi game
-Phantasy Star III, IV
-Any DMC
-Metroid Prime 1-3, AM2R
-Salamander
-Street Fighter Zero 1-3
-Langrisser
-Final Fantasy II, VI, Tactics
-Xenogears
-Super Mario RPG (yuck)
-Capcom vs SNK 1,2
-D2
-F355 Challenge
-Marie to Ellie Atelier
-Power Stone 2

Forget the list I posted earlier. I'm thinking instead of going with a summer theme for my list. By that I mean, games that have to do with beaches, ocean, jungle, surfing and the like.

Here are some I'm considering whittling down to 10:

Aquaria (PC)
BioShock (360)
Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball (Xbox)
Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 (360)
Deep Blue (TG16)
Dive: The Medes Islands Secret (Wii)
Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES)
Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES)
Ecco the Dolphin (GEN)
Ecco the Dolphin 2 (GEN)
Ecco: The Tides of Time (PS2)
Everblue 2 (PS2)
Finny the Fish and the Seven Waters (PS2)
Greendog: The Beached Surfer Dude! (GEN)
High Seas Havoc (GEN)
Hook (SNES)
Jungle Strike (SNES)
Just Cause (Xbox)
Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer (PS2)
Little Mermaid (NES)
Lost in Blue: Shipwrecked (Wii)
Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow (GEN)
MotorStorm: Pacific Rift (PS3)
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure (SNES)
Scuba Diver (2600)
Sqoon (NES)
Startropics (NES)
Sub Rebellion (PS2)
Submarine Attack (SMS)
Super Adventure Island (SNES)
Super Adventure Island 2 (SNES)
Survival Kids 2 (GBC)
TransWorld Surf (PS2)
Treasures of the Deep (PS1)

No matter how this list ends up, Dsh is going to flay my bones. :(

I see a lot of good games on these lists...but not a lot of classics. Of the games I see here, I recommend:

Kung Fu Master
Life Force
Pole Position
R-Type
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Bionic Commando
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VI
Devil May Cry
Dragon Quest
Donkey Kong (GB)
StarTropics
Mega Man 2
Gradius
The Legend of Zelda
Zelda II
Super C
God of War
Final Fantasy Adventure
Rocket Knight Adventures
Zanac
Space Megaforce
R-Type III (not as hard as R-Type Delta, but harder than any other game)
Chrono Trigger
Castlevania SOTN
Phantasy Star
Super Metroid
Mega Man X
Yoshi's Island
Doom
Kiby's Dream Land
Panzer Dragoon
Panzer Dragoon II
Metroid Prime
Street Fighter Alpha
Super Mario RPG

I have beaten all of them. All are great, and all are classics.

I have also beaten Jackal, Pandora's Tower, Call of Cthulhu, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Paper Mario, Ace Attorney 3, Mega Man 5, Mega Man 6, Legendary Wings, Capxom v. SNK, Capxom v. SNK 2, and Abadox. All of them are good; some of them are great; but I would hesitate to call any of them classics.

Please explain what Ecco: The Tides of Time (PS2) is...

Worth noting that the Genesis versions of the Ecco games are brutal. In the Sega CD versions you get checkpoints throughout the levels. Not in the Genesis versions.

No idea what your experience is with these, but you think Demon's Souls was hard? Kind of a joke compared to these. That's why I haven't beaten Tides of Time. The difficulty picks up directly from the end of the first, which is insane.

The cute covers couldn't be anymore misleading. They are extremely hard and even the plot is super bizarre and dark. It was a great experience beating the first game at least, just don't expect a nice fun day at the beach.

I just found my old Final Fantasy V save. I think I might finally truly finish it off. I still don't care much for it, though.

What version? The PSX Anthology release has a garbage translation.

My fingers were out of their mind. I meant to type:

Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future (PS2)

And I forgot about Ecco Jr.

I dated a girl many years ago who beat all the Ecco games on Genesis. They can't be that hard. She wasn't insanely great at gaming or anything.

SNES, via RPGe's translation. I almost finished it off back in the day, but got tired of playing it, downloaded a save game at the end, and watched the ending. This was before YouTube was an option.

I'm actually halfway through the boss gauntlet in the Cleft of Dimension, so when I feel froggy, I'll take it out. Ironically, that's the boss that took me out last time, the stupid boss that turns you into frogs. Whee! I actually have a feeling I'm going to run smack into a brick wall on the boss after, though.

And yes, the PSX version was not localized well. "Y Burn" indeed.
