Now I want to try and get to 100!...

I asked if others here count quick arcade runs of games as beaten and yeah, I guess why not. See the credits and it counts. So these are the ones I've beaten this year off the top of my head looking at my Steam library. Always loved Ikaruga even though it's different, it's gross that I used to be able to 1CC it back on the 360 I'm pretty sure... and I specifically remember "Easy" was much harder to beat, because there's less enemies and beams that you can use to your advantage with the charge shots. This game requires a lot of time to 1CC, but I just free played it for memory sake and had fun. Too bad Radiant Silvergun isn't on Steam.

All in all, the best game of this batch and probably dethrones Ikaruga for me, is easily Mushihimesama. This game is mindblowing. It's got like an Uncharted level of polish and production values for an arcade shmup, but the gameplay is incredible as well. Even if you're not out to 1CC it or doing bad, it just simply feels sublime to play and you feel badass regardless. The visuals and colors are handled incredibly well too, some bullet hell types get way too obnoxious with colors or varied projectiles. But dying in Mushihimesama ends up not feeling unfair, rather I can see exactly where and how I messed up and continue to improve my skill. I'll keep going back to this one. I wish the sequel would be put up on Steam too. I'm usually more for the sci-fi aesthetic in shmups, but this is full on Nausica (literally) and yeah. Literally everything about this game is basically perfect.

Thunder Force 4 is still my favorite shmup. Yeah, I'm that weird guy that likes horizontal ones. Because 16bit shmups rule. But I can easily give the vertical throne to Mushihimesama now.

68. Splatterhouse: Naughty Graffiti | 6/10

ImageImage

In 1989 Namco released a Famicom prequel to the arcade hit Splatterhouse. This Japan-only horror platformer was developed by Now Production, and is frankly a Splatterhouse designed for kids. (Although it was never released outside Japan, there is an English fan translation available.) With its super-deformed graphical style and ever pervasive sense of humor, Naughty Graffiti is a different experience than its hardcore gore-fest predecessor. Naughty Graffiti is more concerned with parodying classic horror cinema (everything from Thriller to Alien to The Fly to Friday the 13th) than providing polished gameplay. That is to say there's a nonstop humorous narrative, complete with multiple endings. One of the endings reveals Naughty Graffiti as something of an origin story (hence my "prequel" reference). The gameplay itself consists of the player chopping many enemies to death with a meat cleaver (and occasionally blasting with a shotgun), while jumping over various obstacles. The rote stage traversal is never great, but the bosses are often imaginative and challenging. Unfortunately the overall level design and difficulty balancing is rather shoddy, but the player receives stage passwords (and four continues), plus an ever expanding health bar, to be filled by eating candy and burgers. While Splatterhouse: Naughty Graffiti is by no means the apex of the Splatterhouse series, it's still a great Halloween choice for a NES connoisseur.

1. Runbow - Wii U
2. Battlefield 1 - Xbox One
3. Until Dawn - PS4
4. Super Mario Sunshine - Gamecube
5. Titanfall 2 - Xbox One
6. Wario Ware, Inc: Mega Party Game$ - Gamecube
7. Pikmin 2 - Gamecube
8. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Wii U
9. Dawn of War 2 - PC
10. Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising - PC
11. Sonic Mania - PS4

I know I'm late to the party and most of all have probably moved on, but I beat Sonic Mania today and it was glorious. I hadn't realized the stage that I had grown frustrated with, was actually the final stage. Just goes to show that what felt like an insurmountable challenge to me gave such a reward in the end. My overall thoughts is that I hope the same group of developers and that Sega are able to kick into gear, and that Sonic Mania leads the charge into more quality Sonic the Hedgehog games like it. The soundtrack, controls, stage design, and virtually everything else about it will make Sonic Mania a classic. If you haven't played it already, I hope this is one of your games to play in 2017.

I enjoyed that Splatterhouse game. It's not amazing, but it's a fun little romp with an interesting sense of humor.

I don't know where this goes, so I'll put it here.

Because of my unemployment, I have much more free time to dedicate towards gaming. So, I've decided to go back and finish up some games. I wouldn't call these games beaten in my normal sense, so I will not be adding them to my list or doing a full review. These are games I've already beaten, but I would like to complete. Games with after credits part, extra dungeons, side quests that I skipped out on or anything of that nature. Replays of games I have played in forever to get the little things I missed out on.

With that in mind, I completed Final Fantasy X this afternoon!

I've been playing it non-stop as there were some aspects to the game that I never did. I collected all the Overdrive Modes, which took forever.

I finally did all the Butterfly, Chocobo and Dodging Lightning Bolts to get everybody's sigils and Master Weapons.

Last, but not least, I finally beat every Monster in the Monster Arena, which required me to go through the Sphere Grid one more time and replace the nodes with better ones.

I can finally say that I have completed my co-#1 Favorite Game of All Time!
