Ys Origin.

What can I say? The best kind of Ys is like Oath and VI. Plays great. Bosses offer a challenge. Fantastic music. Really does set up Ys 1 very well. A lot of references as well and items. Adol didn't have to go through this much in the tower. He had it easy. I have the game on Steam as well but never finished that version. So was nice to finally finish it.

Tron Bonne is cool stuff. I'd recommend it to pretty much anybody. Despite the Legends games and the spinoff not being "traditional" Mega Man, I have a real appreciation for what Capcom did with them, and the graphical style somehow still holds up today. How many 3D PSX games can you say that about?

January:
1) The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition (PC) (8.5) (1/1) (~5.5 hours)
2) ActRaiser (SNES) (8.0) (1/2) (~4 hours)

76) Snake's Revenge (NES) (8.0) (9/4) (~4 hours)
77) Ys: Memories of Celceta (VITA) (7.5) (9/4) (~25 hours?)
78) Skate or Die 2: The Search for Double Trouble (NES) (5.0) (9/7) (~2 hours)

So, Skate or Die 2 has always been a game that fascinated me. I had a friend of mine that owned it, and I actually got pretty good at the halfpipe portion of the game. Not so much now, but still! But the adventure portion also appealed to me, and I finally decided I'd give it a go from start to finish.

The first stage is basically comprised of you skating around on your terrible skateboard, collecting items like tacos and CDs. But you can actually run into Rodney, who will trade you new, improved boards for those items, and Lester, who will sell you new moves that help with your mobility. You also have a paint gun, and it's how you take out the first boss, the mayor's wife. (Yes, our "heroes" are counter-culture hooligans, what did you expect?) There's a decent amount of diversity there, with you able to explore some buildings and even delve into the sewers for items. Also, there are alligators down there with boxing gloves. Yes. Completely logical.

The second stage is in a mall, and you run around making deliveries. If you didn't upgrade your board, you're pretty much not going to have a shot at getting to any of them on time. It's alright, but you've got to learn how to effectively dodge all the stuff the game throws at you, and that's a theme throughout the game.

The third stage finds you recovering the pages from Rodney's planned halfpipe on the beach. Of course, you dodge posing muscle men, roller-skating girls, and... crabs and seagulls. Sure, why not?

The last stage requires you to recover a stolen permit and rescue the girl of the group, all within a giant maze of a warehouse. This is actually where the game turns nasty. Almost every room is full of goons ready to take you out, and the area is a massive maze. Seriously, I never thought I'd say this, but you might need to draw maps for this one. It's complex, multi-floor stuff and really feels out of place here. And your best action is to avoid as many enemies as possible; fighting them is counterproductive. Once you find the boss, you simply paint/egg/firecracker him into submission while dodging his charges. If you haven't found the permit, you have to dive back in and find it, and the game is done once you have gotten it. Again, the layout is pretty brutal. Make maps, or use them online, and chart out your path.

Really, the only barrier to enjoyment of this game is the difficult controls, and some of that is intentional. Skateboarding isn't supposed to be easy, right? It can make for a frustrating experience at times, but there are some neat ideas going on here. That last level drained a lot of my good will toward the game, though; I figure the game balances out to "average", but it's astoundingly uneven.

Still wish I was good at the halfpipe, though.

(Oh, and I really like the character art for this game.)

August
41. Adventure Time: Secret of the Nameless Kingdom (Vita)
A fun more bite sized Zelda clone. I don't really know the source material but that didn't hinder the enjoyment. Cheap as too, think its like $1 on PSN.

42. Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational
Good god this game is amazing. VERY hard, but if you keep with it you see your skills continue to improve. Tons of stuff to do after you pop the credits as well. Huge amount of content. Sadly, my dumbass self left my vita in New Zealand not long after this. So if it doesn't survive the return shipping then I likely won't play this again as its just too time consuming to redo it all on a new save file.

43. Severed (Vita)
A lot of people love this game. I just thought it was alright. Might be because touch controls have never really worked for me. I think its something to do with bloodflow in my fingers.

September

44. Savage Bees (PS3)
So long, so boring. Not a great shmup and definitely one of capcoms weakest.

45. Cloudberry Kingdom (PS3)
Simple in concept. Devilish in execution. A great platformer that gets balls to the wall hard but always feels fair. And is very easy to just go "One more try" on that tricky level you have been stuck on.

I played it back in 1999 or thereabouts. I didn't finish it. I can remember thinking the gritty aesthetics were cool, and monster designs suitably menacing. I also remember the game was hella hard and seemed not very well balanced. There was potential there though.

I had the exact same experience, but in like 2001. I keep feeling like I should go back and give it another chance.
