47. Batman: The TellTale Series - PlayStation 4 - May 17

Image

I'm a big fan of TellTale's games. I absolutely adored The Wolf Among Us and all three seasons of The Walking Dead, and I've still got Game of Thrones sitting on my shelf for whenever I get around to starting it. They take storytelling to a level rarely seen in gaming today, and while some may criticize their games for being too light on actual gameplay, the player agency the choices give and the quality of the character development and storytelling that their games provide are remarkable.

Image

For those (somehow) not in the know, TellTale's series consist of episodic stories told in five episodes. Being impatient as shit, I always buy the season pass discs and keep them shelved for a while so that when I do play through the series, I can (hopefully) play through the whole series at once instead of being left on cliffhangers until the next episode is released because there are some major cliffhangers in these games. Even if it's not a definite cliffhanger moment, they build up the conflict in the story so well that you just have to know what happens next.

Image

Anywho, you play as the titular caped crusader in a non-canon story of Batman's early days in Gotham before Gordon was police commissioner, before the GCPD worked with Batman instead of shooting at him, and before Batman's archnemesis Joker was appeared. The story revolves around widespread attacks by a group called the Children of Arkham, the secrets of the Wayne family and Mayor Hill administration, and the mayoral campaign of Harvey Dent. I won't spoil any major story points, but it's a brilliantly written story not only of a villain threatening the people of Gotham but a tragedy about the fall and redemption of a hero.

Image

My only major complaint with the game is the frame rate. It's not a high action game, so some people probably aren't bothered by the frame rate, but it drove me up the wall. I don't know how other consoles, PC, or mobile platforms compare, but PlayStation 4 had some pretty major frame rate issues. At times, it was a smooth, unbroken 30 fps; other times it would stutter along like a low end PC trying to play a game on max graphics. It didn't totally kill my experience, but it definitely broke my immersion in places and was an enormous annoyance. Aaaand there's also the occasional entertaining but wtf graphical issue as seen below.

Image

All things considered, TellTale's Batman continues the studio's stellar record of superb storytelling and world building. It's got the bizarre performance issues that often accompany TellTale's games (at least on PS4), but they're not so severe as to render the game unplayable. If you don't care for Batman or the DC universe in general, you probably won't enjoy this game much, but if you're a huge Batman/DC fan or (like me) generally apathetic but love a good story, this should definitely be on your shelf and/or hard drive.

26. Shovel Knight: Specter Of Torment (Switch)
27. Puyo Puyo Tetris (Switch)

Specter of Torment - When I thought that it couldn't get any better than Shovel Knight, Specter of Torment ups the ante with awesome new platforming mechanics, revamped levels and an all around awesome story. In this addition, you play as Specter Knight as you gather up knights to form the Order of No Quarter. As you progress, you learn about the back story of Specter Knight in flashback levels, which illuminate you on his origins.

The real meat is on how specter knight plays. When jumping in the air you can do a slash dash that cuts through enemies and propels you into the air across gaps. chaining these slashes is insanely fulfilling! You can also do a mini wall run up vertical surfaces. This was leagues better than Plague Knight and was just a genuine treat to play.

Puyo Puyo Tetris - I just finished the campaign and can safely say that it was a breeze compared to other Puyo Puyo titles. The various game modes make many of the levels a lot easier and even on the harder AI levels, you can usually win by keeping yourself alive long enough for the computer to make mistakes.

As for the story of the game, the world of Puyo Puyo and Tetris are colliding and the vast cast of Puyo Puyo characters must team up with all new Tetris-themed characters to find out how to stabilize the universe and keep their worlds separate. It is insanely silly and nonsensical and the voice acting is groan inducing. The game was fun though!

29. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon | 360 | "flight sim" | 2011 | 6h 25m | 5/10

So here's what happens if you try to turn Ace Combat into Call of Duty and dumb down the difficulty. As a long time Ace Combat series fan, I do give Namco credit for attempting to update the decades old game design they'd been recycling over and over. However the execution here was ludicrously botched. Yes I enjoyed the ability to fly various craft besides just jets, I enjoyed the viewpoints of more than one pilot, and was pleased by the most impressive graphics Ace Combat had utilized thus far. But the plot stunk, most mission design was terrible, the missions themselves were obnoxiously long, and the DFM system practically ruins the core gameplay. DFM is basically a mini-game you have to play almost every time you shoot down a targeted enemy. DFM is not fun, and it takes all the skill out of the player's hands and replaces it with an attempt at scripted spectacle. It was a dumb idea, and it should have at least been optional. While Assault Horizon is still better than the worst Ace Combat I've played (Joint Assault) it's still substantially inferior to the best (The Unsung War). The road to hell is paved with good intentions. That old adage perfectly sums up the plane wreck that Ace Combat: Assault Horizon turned out to be.

48. Batman: Arkham VR - PlayStation VR - May 18

Image

Batman: Arkham VR is Rocksteady's attempt to cash in on both the early VR hype as well as the hype of the extremely successful Arkham series. It launched with an affordable price tag - $20 IIRC - but that makes a lot more sense when you play it and realize that it's only about an hour long. Despite the exceptionally short length, however, it is at least an extremely enjoyable VR experience.

Image

The game, naturally, is in a first person perspective. You play with two PlayStation Move controllers, one in each hand controlling Batman's hands. You play as Batman (obviously) and investigate the disappearance of Robin and Nightwing. You go through various environments and investigate using your grapple gun, scanner, and batarang. It's not terribly complex game, but the motion controls and VR headset make the game ridiculously immersive. Each environment has optional things to explore and secrets to find. Finding these secrets will unlock secret characters and features.

Image

Let's take a minute and address the game's negative points, and there are several. First and foremost what I've seen most people complain about - the length. The game is extraordinarily short. It will probably only take you between 45 and 75 minutes to finish depending on how thoroughly you explore an area. You've got the occasional little control glitches that often accompany games that utilize motion controls, but they're not too bad; it can take a little bit to get a feel for and avoid, but most of the game doesn't require quick and precise movement, so you've got plenty of time to figure out how to finagle it.

Image

Batman: Arkham VR definitely has its flaws, but as an immersive Batman experience, especially so relatively early in VR's adoption. The length is definitely a legitimate complaint, but at least the price tag is fairly low. The story is interesting, but the gameplay is just unbelievably fun and addicting. Yeah, it's got its cons, but the gameplay more than makes up for it in my opinion.

29. Pikmin 3 (Wii U)
30. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Wii U)
31. Super Mario 3D World (Wii U)

32. Tales of Innocence R (Vita)

And so I've finished the other Vita reimagining of a DS Tales game. The first RPG entirely in Japanese I've finished as well! Neither Innocence nor it's reimagining were released in the West, so Japanese was the only option without pirating the DS version. It wasn't my least favorite Tales game, but it's certainly no great loss we never saw it in the West.

The story is kinda fundamentally not that great. The main cast of six characters (as well as several NPC's) all have past lives whose memories influence their actions. The main problem is that these past emotions and memories conflict with the characters' normal aspirations and personalities. It all made for a very strangely dissonant feel to the otherwise well-written characters that never really clicked for me. The end villain was fairly well constructed, and it wasn't my least favorite villain in a Tales game, but this has certainly been my least favorite overarching plot in a Tales game. It is worth noting, however, that just as Hearts used several narrative ideas that would be improved upon in Graces, Innocence uses several ideas that are improved upon in Vesperia, so that was an interesting tidbit to notice. I'd still say Hearts and Graces have more similarities than Innocence and Vesperia, but it's still interesting. As a final note on the story, I will mention that this is the only Tales entry I've played where the macsot character (think Teddy from Persona 4, Cat things in Monster Hunter, the Cheagle from Tales of the Abyss, basically just a cute fluffy character they can make toys of easily who isn't a human) actively annoyed me, so that's something else to consider.

The combat and leveling system are fairly similar to Hearts R in many ways. The leveling is done independently, but skill points earned in battle can be spent on "styles" (skills, basically) in a big style-grid, and you unlock more stuff as you do certain sidequests and as the story progresses. I thought it was okay, but a smidgen more confusing than it really needed to be (in good ol' Tales fashion). I think I preferred Hearts R's system to this though.

The content added for the reimagining compared to the DS version is fairly significant. Two new party members bring the total up to 8, and they're both fairly well written into the story. It's a little clear they've been tacked on after the fact given that they don't have any really big stakes in the story, but it never feels like they're just absent from any given event and they make their presence worthwhile. The new Vulcan weapons are also a fun diversion that give you a new 2nd ultimate arte, which was another cool feature. Just like in Hearts R, there're characters from other games (in this case from Hearts and Xillia) as the final encounters to fight in the arena, but they are WAY harder than in Hearts. They're significantly harder than the final boss, I'd say, in Innocence R, where they're far easier than that in Hearts R. Also some Tri-Verse areas to do in the post-game (I think you actually have to do them in new game +, which is a little lame) which are crazy difficult but give some new backstory to the added party members, but I didn't try those.

Verdict: Recommended for Series Veterans. There are so many other very well done, not to mention domestically released, Tales games out there that I find it difficult to recommend one I didn't enjoy quite as much to just anyone. For anyone itching for more Tales who has enjoyed entries in the series since Abyss, though, I'd say this is a fine thing to give a whirl. It's not bad by any means, just not quite up to the standard of others in the series.

30. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Wii U)
31. Super Mario 3D World (Wii U)
32. Tales of Innocence R (Vita)

33. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)

And so ends my journey to play through the recent Mario titles I own but hadn't yet played/beaten. It took me a little while to get into it, but it's definitely the best example of Mario in that style up to that point. It took me a little over 16 hours, and I got all 120 stars (but didn't attempt any of the green ones because ain't no one got time for that).

The level design reminds me of a Kirby game, to be honest. Kirby Mass Attack specifically. One of the things I love about that game is that EVERY level feels really different from any other. Mario Galaxy 2's 48-ish Galaxies have a very similar effect of each stage trying to be very different from another, and it succeeds greatly. As a kind of prototype to Mario 3D World, I suppose, most levels only have 2 or maybe 3 stars as opposed to the 3+ so many in Mario Galaxy 1 had. Many new power ups involving both just Mario and the new Yoshi to diversify the levels even further.

The difficulty curve is just right. The beginning of the game is a little too easy for my liking, but especially once you get to world 4 and 5 those levels are brutal. The comet levels especially are freaking insane in worlds 6 and 7. Granted not quite as hard as the first game, which had 2 stars I could never quite get. Perhaps I'm just better at games now than a decade ago when I was 11 :P

The controls are top notch, as usual, and Mario controls very well. There was only one point where Yoshi didn't quite do his flutter jump even though I'd told him to, and occasionally wall jumping wouldn't quite cooperate with me how I wanted it to. There was also one level (Flipsville) where you go upside down frequently and the control during that is very unintuitive, I felt.

Verdict: Very Recommended. If Mario 3D World didn't quite do it for you, then this is another fantastic dose of just about as good Mario platformy goodness. This is only single player though, so I do still have to recommend 3D World over this. It was definitely the top of Nintendo 3D platformers at the time though, to be sure.

Mega Turrican! Amazing stuff and a nice follow up to Contra. From what I understand, Mega Turrican is kind of a conversion of the Amiga Turrican 3. So this one might be more canon than the two Super installments, but I still think I like Super Turrican the most.

The pictures should say it all. Does it look awesome? If yes, then it's probably for you. An awesome run and gun platformer with very top notch graphics and INCREDIBLE music from the master Chris Huelsbeck.

Not too big on the Bionic Commando rope mechanic and tricky platforming here and there, but it's not a huge deal. The difficulty is fair, with some cheap deaths in the earlier stages off and on with pits or some busy spots in one of the water levels. But if you explore a bit it's easy to stock up on lives. Had to use one continue, but you get 3 I think, so it's very doable for a first run if you're familial with the genre. Bit on the longer side for these types, took me 1h 26m. But the level variety is constantly fresh and there's tons of bosses to get through, never got old!

Also Alien Covenant wasn't that good, but it was nice to play Mega Turrican today to follow up on the real Alien canon.
