I beat Final Fantasy V back in 2008. I don't remember much about it, other than the fact it was boring and had a bullshit final boss. I don't blame Squaresoft for not having localized that one in ye olde days. FFVI is a tremendous improvement in every way over FFV.

I am digging the FFV hate. I have never liked it (the novelty of the job system wears thin) but back in my JRPG days, the Internet acted like FFV walked on water.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Final Fantasy V had a very early fan translation (1998 I think).

That alone was enough to cause bunches of hype.

This is because you haven't played Final Fantasy VI yet. Game's so good it'll fill three slots.

Outside of the obviously broken stuff like the X-Fight Sword Magic combo you really need to dive deep into how things work, and be willing to look at enemy statistics to realize that oh shit, this boss is vulnerable to instant death, or crap, this boss can be locked into a loop of using a harmless ability if you have up reflect. But if you're willing to go in that deep you realize that basically every party is very viable in the Four Job Fiesta. Playing it normally can definitely be a slog.

ExDeath is the best villain in the franchise.

Am I the only one who doesn't think FFVI was the end all be all 16-bit RPG? Oh, this is the wrong thread for that opinion, isn't it...

Kefka sucks and the entire World of Ruin portion is pretty bad, which is like 30-40% of the game. It's also painfully easy. I love it, but I love to rag on it too and it's definitely a bit overrated. Pretty sure I like FF4 more. Those are the two I've replayed the most. My opinion of FF6 seems to downgrade with every replay, while my opinion of FF4 only increases every venture through it and its multitude of various versions and releases. Supreme Victory!

Let's at least set this straight, Celes > Terra.

You're not wrong. That would be Chrono Trigger you're looking for. 8) FFVI is close to perfect, but it ain't perfect. (Neither is Chrono, but shush.)

I'd also put Lunar: Eternal Blue, Lufia II, and Phantasy Star IV up there, if we constrain it to games we actually ended up getting.
