You didn't technically say the SNES version was bad, but it'd be completely logical to draw from this that you probably think it is. If something goes very wrong, typically the results are bad. It is a strange thing indeed when something goes very wrong and the results are just fine.

Ys III had plenty of PC releases too. MSX, PC88, PC98, and the X68. The X68 version OST is frickin' rad ass if you like FM.

Is the SNES version the only one with this track? I don't remember it being in any of the other games. Plays during a cutscene. I love it.

32. Destruction Derby 64 (N64)

I beat Destruction Derby 64 on the Nintendo 64 this afternoon!

My friend was the big Destruction Derby fan as he was a huge fan of the original PC game. Wrecking cars quickly became a favorite genre of ours and we would seek out as many games as possible. Some good and some not so much. I remember him picking up the N64 version one evening and we eventually played the hell out of the game. I always remembered that game and I realized that I wanted to play it single player. After a long while, I finally found it and bought it as a celebration of leaving my bad job. Ironically, for my last Random Retro Monday, I was finally able to play the game.

Destruction Derby 64 is split up into two types of races. There are the regular races with half of the cars going one way and the other half going the other way. You earn points by crashing into cars and by earning checkpoints scattered throughout the raises. Also, there are large bowls where you drive around and crash cars into points. It's actually a very elegant system as you can gain points from crashing, but eventually destroying your own car. Or, you could avoid the crashes all together and just race for points. The crashing is the best as it is exciting to suddenly run into your opponent after a blind turn. The tracks are varied and the unlockable cars are unique as well. I was driving around in a NYC taxi, so that is always fun.

Maybe it's because of their size or just the game, but the impact of the crashes never really hit home. Each car felt like the size of a Matchbox car, so the boom and pop just wasn't there. You can see damage on your car, but it doesn't really affect the handling besides smoke getting in your way. And besides the tracks with championship mode, multiplayer and Time Trials, there isn't much to the game. It's great in short spurts, but don't expect to be playing it for days on end.

Overall, I really enjoyed Destruction Derby 64. The cars handle fairly well and the crashes, though muted, always caused a reaction out of me. I had no problem with a cheap computer and I actually beat it rather easily. It's fair and fun to just pick up and play. It's not complex or anything, but it doesn't really need to be. The game is a perfect piece of candy. Fun, a little bit sugar, tastes great, but it all disappears rather quickly. A great game for arcade racing fans and people who love to smash cars together! :gentlemen:

Yeah, wow. My brain will only allow my ears to be subjected to that for so long. Turns out that that's about 50 seconds.

That is a great version of the soundtrack, but if I just listen to some of the TCD tracks back to back with thos X68K ones, it's clear that the difference is still night and day. Especially with Sealed Time and Beat of Destruction.

31. A Ride Into the Mountains (iOS)
32. Super Mario Run (iOS)
33. Legend of Kusakari (3DS)
34. Banjo Kazooie (N64/360)

A Ride Into the Mountains (iOS) is a minimalist action game where you play as a mounted archer. You use the touchscreen to shoot arrows and the gyroscope to move your horse. It's OK. I got it for free and deleted it as soon as I finished it.

Super Mario Run (iOS) is the best iOS platformer. I bought it on sale for $5, and I loved it. Nintendo has added a ton of content, and I am still working through all of it. (Those star coins are tough to get, and trying to get them all turns the best iOS platformer into a great puzzle game.) Highly recommended.

The Legend of Kusakari (3DS) is a fun, very Japanese game based on tried-and-true pastime of "mowing the grass" in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. (Seriously...it is based on that.) In it, you mow the lawn so that the legendary hero doesn't have to worry about fighting monsters and wading through tall grass at the same time. It plays like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past transformed into an action-puzzle game, and while it is very easy to beat, completing the challenges and getting S ranks on all of the levels is very, very hard. Also highly recommended.

Banjo Kazooie (N64/360) is a bit of a conundrum to me. On the one hand, I hated it. The controls are terrible; the camera is worse; and it is full of vintage Rare trolling. On the other hand, it is genuinely challenging; the levels are wonderfully designed; and it is oddly compelling. I just had to find all 100 jigsaw pieces and 900 music notes before beating the game, but I often wanted to throw my controller through the wall in frustration. (It is also the definition of juvenile.) I am ultimately glad a played through it, but I do not see myself picking up the sequel anytime soon.

For the rest of the year, I will be concentrating on beating games I started but never finished. They are:

Affordable Space Adventrues
Alto's Adventure
Costume Quest 2
Go! Go! Commander Video
River City Knights of Justice
Rush
Super Amazing Wagon Adventure
Yoshi's Wooly World

Beating all of these will give me a fresh start in 2018. Wish me luck!

*Laughs* I know that Zelda is a very controversial topic, so I won't mention too much that I absolutely loved everything about Wind Waker.

But, more importantly, thank you kindly for the compliments! I don't think I'll ever reach the triple digits like some people around here, but I would like to think I have a good number and there are some quality there. I will do my best to continually play retro games for as long as possible!
