96. Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis)I'm not gonna win any new friends with this post.
My feelings about the
Sonic games have been stated unambiguously. Whether it be the "classic" 16-bit entries or the more modern ones, the vast swatch of 'em just aren't that good.
This first entry is one of the "better" ones. Let me start by saying that it makes a great first impression. I'll never forget playing it for the first time back in 1991 in my local Sam's Club. As a Nintendo kid I had never seen anything like this. And I still think the first "zone" is absolutely brilliant, with it's thumping soundtrack, zippy protagonist, and charming checkerboard layout. The Atari-style one-button controls are just fantastic.
This brings me to my first issue (which also applies to most all 2D games of this series): the game gets worse as it progresses. Almost every subsequent stage is less fun than the one that proceeds it. I have no idea why this game was marketed as being speedy because Sonic the hedgehog is not fast atoll. If anything, this game is slow as shit. Around every corner is yet another hidden set of spikes, or springs, or a switch, or whatever. I end up tiptoeing around the hazards and never get into that zen-like platforming "groove" that characterizes a large number of competing Nintendon't games. Graphics and music remain compelling throughout, at least. There are some hit detection issues (I still wish Sonic could simply land on enemies to hurt them Mario-style) and for the love of all that is holly this is certainly one game that did not need pitfalls. Also, eff the water stages. Eff them.
Overall, I don't even know. This isn't bad. It's occasionally fun. It just ain't my type of game.
