Did the final boss theme in Shovel Knight feel like Uematsu Zeromus level wizardry all over again? That's the vibe I got. Yeah, I rarely like indie games, and Shovel Knight probably permanently ruined it forever now. Gonna take several combined miracles to reach those heights again.

Least you enjoyed Sonic CD, that one gets the punching bag treatment the most... so you're OKAY in my book for liking that one since I hold it dearly close.

Yuuup. Shovel Knight is a blast. It was my game of the year when it released. You should give the Plague Knight expansion a shot, too. It completely changes how it all feels, and is a completely unique experience in its own right.

Have they put out any other DLC/extra content, or is that the one I always hear about?

Catching up on the list a bit. I have a pile of things to play between now and the end of the year, so here's hoping I find the time.

Elegy for a Dead World is more interesting in concept and appearance than it is in execution. Gunjack is a great Galaga-style game if Galaga was played in VR. SOMA is really something special, and easily amongst the best things I've played this year - it has some of the best sound design of any game I've played, ever. TOTD:O is a fun romp, though I still prefer the lightgun version of the game.

109. The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces - Wii - November 3

I've always been a bit of a junkie for flight combat sims, but oddly enough, I've not played many of them. The Sky Crawlers was one of the games I got as part of a Secret Santa exchange back in July from Fragems, and given that it's a genre that I love on a console that I love, it's stayed pretty high on my "to play" list. I finally got around to playing it this week.

Image

It took me probably half of the game just to figure out if I liked it or not. This isn't an immediate gem for me, although having now finished it, I would say it qualifies as a Wii hidden gem, even if right at the cusp. The first thing that reaaaaally takes some getting used to is the controls. It says that it supports the Wii Classic Controller and the Gamecube controller, but I couldn't figure out how to make either of those work (granted, I didn't spend too much time trying); it just kept telling me to plug a Nunchuk in. Anyway, with the standard Wiimote and Nunchuk control scheme, the first awkward bit (at least for us right handers) is that it tells you to hold the Wiimote in your left hand and the Nunchuk in your right hand. Which feels EXTREMELY awkward for me. I got used to that, though. The controls, while definitely requiring three or four missions before you really get a feel for them, do work (for the most part) once you figure it out. Your throttle is controlled by the Wiimote; keep it level to go at your middle cruising speed, point it up at the ceiling to go your max speed, and point it down at the ground (or hold B) to decelerate to your minimum speed (and eventually stall if you don't accelerate). The Nunchuk controls your direction, but you don't do so with the control stick; you pull the Nuncuk back to ascend, tilt it down to descend, and tilt it to the left and right to turn left and right, respectively. The biggest problem is that the tilt controls with the Nuncuk don't feel as precise or response as I would like, but - as I've mentioned - it DOES work once you get used to it. It's just not the most natural-feeling for intuitive control scheme they could have picked.

Image

The story is where the game lost some points with me. It's based on an anime movie (which I've never seen), so perhaps the movie actually makes sense, but just getting the story from the game feels haphazard and as if there HAD to be translation errors. From what I could gather, Japan conquered Europe sometime after the second world war (because the whole game takes place in Europe, but literally every single location and character name is traditional Japanese), and people hated peace. So two private military companies - Rostock and Lautern - start hiring pilots to fly their planes and kill each other because...I have no clue. So you're part of Rostock's elite Black Cat squadron, and there are these people called Kildren that apparently never age and I guess regenerate or reincarnate or some shit because like half a dozen of them die over the course of the story, and then identical people show up later with a different name and no memory of any of the shit that killed the dude. Like, even the characters are like "Dafuq, you dead" and the guys are like "Na fam, I don't even know yall, I just got here." And then that's sort of it. It never really gets explained beyond that. Having played the entirely 5 or 6 hour story, I can confidently say that I have no idea what the fuck was going on.

Image

The anime cut scenes between missions were nice, though. The voice acting was okay for the most part. The writing sucked ass, though, so that sort of canceled out the decent voice acting. It all played kind of like one of those anime that are trying really hard to be serious and make some philosophical point, and you really want to stick with it, but it's kind of boring but not QUITE boring enough to flat out drop it because you REALLY want to be good. The whole thing's just awkward. If you do decide to pick this game up, skip all of the cutscenes and dialogue. Stick to blowing shit up.

Image

Graphically, the game looks pretty good. It's not pushing the Wii's hardware to its limit or anything, but it looks good as long as you're right at extremely low altitudes; then the shoddy ground textures become extremely apparent. You also have some neat customization feature for your plane. The better you do on missions, the more points you earn, and as the points accumulate throughout your playthrough, you'll start to unlock new planes and components. You can change the engine, the wings, the armor, the cockpit, etc., all of which have different effects on your plane's stats. You also unlock different secondary weapons for each plane, and choosing those wisely can have a dramatic impact on your success or failure in a mission. If your mission to take out all aerial targets, rockets - which are air-to-surface weapons and almost impossible to aim at airborne targets - are going to be useless. Likewise, if your objective is to destroy an enemy base, the heavy cannon - which is a semi-auto weapon that deals extreme damage to airborne enemies - is going to be practically worthless.

Image

All in all, despite being made by the same team, The Sky Crawlers is NOT Ace Combat on the Wii. It has a similar feel when you're in combat, but it's not the same, and you shouldn't go into it expecting it to feel the same. The story is garbage, but if you can find it for less than $15, it's a good flight combat sim on the Wii, and I'd recommend picking it up (maybe wait until you can find it for less than $10 if you're not a particular fan of flight combat sims or of the Wii itself).

It's too bad you didn't see the film before playing the game, I think you'd have gotten a lot more out of it. But it's still nice to see someone play Sky Crawlers.

-

Having beaten quite a few (understatement) console based flight sims, there is one that continues to reign supreme for me. If you haven't played through it yet, I can't recommend this one enough:

It's truly a class act, and doesn't require having played any other games in the series to enjoy.

I loved Sky Crawlers. It' simple and short but i was still a blast. I don't recall having any problems with the controls but i don't remember what control scheme i used.

It's just awesome dueling in the air while this plays

If you want a flight game with a great story then pick up the Ace Combat 4. I never finished the fifth because just coudln't beat that awful rescue mission.

36. Costume Quest 2 (PS3)
37. Tales from Space: Mutant Blob Attacks (PS3)
38. Proteus (PS3)
39. Limbo (PS3)

40. Infamous: Festival of Blood (PS3)
A fun non canon side story based on Infamous 2. Vampire themed. A little short, but if you like Infamous games you can't go wrong with this.

41. Magus (PS3)
Its like someone went back in time, brought a budget PS2 dev to present day and had them make a game for PS3. It's not good, but the fact that I was so OP I killed everything in one hit was oddly gratifying.

42. ToeJam & Earl (PS3)
I did not like this. I didn't realize it was a rogue-like going in. I assumed it was a platformer like the sequel. I like the style of it and characters so hopefully I will still enjoy the sequel. Rogue-likes generally just aren't my thing though.

43. Under Defeat HD: Deluxe Edition (PS3)
I suck at shmups a lot, but I really enjoyed my time with this. I'll never 1cc it, I think the best I did was a 3cc. I really like when shmups have widescreen modes. I enjoy them much more when they use the whole screen.

44. Texas Cheat'em (PS3)
Its texas hold'em, except you have a variety of cheats available such as stealing chips, switching card values (which let you get 5 of a kind) seeing your opponents hand etc. Had a career mode with a variety of win conditions that I played through. Its a neat concept but its clear it was made in a rush. The UI is ugly, and it doesn't feel like it had any sort of budget.

45. Nelson Tethers: Puzzle Agent (PS3)
A replay for me. Originally played on PC. I love the art and twin-peaks / x-files story. I hope we get more some day but I imagine we won't.

46. IMSCARED (PC)
A very neat meta-horror game that goes all in with the meta stuff. It's best to go in blind. But if you can grab this for a buck or two when its on sale its worth checking out.

November
47. Battle Fantasia (PS3)
An under looked fighting game by the makers of Guilty Gear. I really liked the character art (but not so much the models). Its also nice that the move lists are fairly small and supers are fairly easy to preform. Beat arcade on very hard and played through every characters story mode.

48. Papo & Yo (PS3)
This game tackles a mature theme (an abusive alcoholic dad) from the perspective of a child's imagination. Ultimately I was disappointed though. It tries really hard to tell an meaningful tale, but it also tries to have good gameplay. But it ends up having neither. It would have been better to focus on one over the other.

49. Arkedo Series 01 - Jump! (PS3)
Just a simple little arcade platformer. Arkedo is one of my favourite hidden devs. Shame they don't exist anymore.

50. Arkedo Series 03 - Pixel (PS3)
Arkedo teamed up with PastaGames on this one. It stars Pix the Cat, who PastaGames later on would use in the games Pix'n Love Rush and Pix the Cat. Definitely a better game then Jump. Its more polished, has more variety etc.
