Agreed. Vanquish ruined the cover shooting genre for me. Everything after has been a disappointment.
I agree that Vanquish was MUCH better than Gears of War in terms of gameplay, but I prefer the plot of Gears, and I do quite enjoy having a machine gun with a chainsaw on it and cutting enemies' bodies in half a moment's notice.

I can't remember a single thing about Gears' plot other than giant alien bugs and big football players.
On the other hand, the final stretch of both Vanquish and Metal Gear Rising will be amazing tales I take to the grave. Can never forget that stuff.

THE COLE TRAIN RUNS ON WHOLE GRAIN. Idk, I like dark, gritty, apocalyptic stuff, even if it's tropey as hell, so Gear is, stylistically, very much to my liking. But it's basically giant alien bugs vs football players on steroids. With chainsaws. Can't forget the chainsaw.

Ahhhhhh shit, Cole Train was the bomb. Didn't he rap the credits theme? Or the main crew. I remember a hilarious credits rap song now.

The worst part of Gears was it caused them to mess up UT3.

My wife and I co-op'd the first Gears a year or two ago. I remember being hyped to play it given how incredible its critical reception was. But alas, for us it turned out to be a 6/10 experience. Gears 1 had a lot of shitty game design to go with its not so bad moments. The plot was a joke and I barely remember anything about it. But I agree that chainsawing enemies never got old. Especially the first time my wife and I played versus multiplayer, and she spent so long finding the perfect sniping spot, and then I snuck up behind her and VROOM VROOM yo ass is in bloody chunks. She was legit pissed.

Gears 1 has a very memorable setting but a very forgettable plot. This was one of my main complaints with the game when I nearly beat it a couple months ago. The game more or less goes out of its way to short-change the narrative and keep the player in the dark about why you are where you are, what you're doing, who's who. I ended up enjoying it a lot less than I could've, I think. I will agree though that chainsawin' bitches never did get old.

A decent platformer / run-and-gun based on the movie. Obviously. There's some pretty unclear objectives because of how foreground and background objects can be obscured, and the last stage can be completely, absolutely cheap and lame. But I figure I could finish it completely if I started from the beginning now that I know how things work. Thankfully, even though I was playing on the Sega CD, there's a stage select code so I wasn't losing progress all the time.
And for the record, I looked it up, and it
isn't just a port of the Genesis version. Very different game.

Well, to be fair, Gears of War does predate Vanquish by 4 years. It's not as if GoW is a poor knock off of Vanquish.

Nah, GoW was just a poor knock off of something else.
