41. Shantae & The Pirate's Curse (WII U)

Shantae & The Pirate's Curse is the best Shantae game, and it is easily one of the best "metroidvania" games as well. It is incredibly fun; the sprite work is incredible; it is full of secrets; it has great boss fights; and it is overflowing with personality. I never saw the "game over" screen, however, and my only complaint is that it is a bit too easy. (The Shantae games seem to get more fun and easier with each iteration.) Finally, the Wii U version makes good use of the Wii U gamepad's second screen, and I recommend that version of the game to anyone interested in playing it.

Shantae & The Pirate's Curse also references the first two Shantae games often, and while playing its predecessors is by no means necessary to enjoy the game, I am glad that I played through the trilogy in order. (A lot of the enemies in Shantae & The Pirate's Curse are updated versions of enemies from the GBC game; so, I knew how to defeat many of them. Moreover, there is a secret area that uses some of the background graphics from the GBC original.) Although Shantae 1/2 Genie Hero looks like it will be very different from Shantae & The Pirate's Curse, my children and I are still very excited for it, and I will probably pre-order a copy of the game later this month.

The game does handle a bit off. It's this weird inbetween fast Doom movement and slower modern movement. Enemies seem to take random amounts of damage, so sometimes you blow through them and other times they're bullet sponges (and it's the same enemy type). The actual plot, once you get past the attempts to be cool, is interesting enough for an FPS. The plot for Wages of Sin (which I forgot to mention) isn't nearly as good. The main villain uses Sin's villain's plan to try and take over the city, and then when he is foiled he decides to blow up the city because, and I quote "If I can't have Freeport no one can!"

So...rehash then, eh? I also remember that weird discrepancy for enemy health, but more guys felt like sponges. I remember constantly being on the verge of running out of ammo in some levels. It just felt like a slog to me.

Yep, Pirate's Curse is the best. They're all really good, though. The original takes a bit of time to really get rolling, but it's excellent in a Simon's Quest sort of way. :)

1/16: Diablo III (PC)

1/23: Baroque (Wii)
2/5: LocoRoco (PSP)
3/31: Picross e2 (3DS DL)
4/7: Stardew Valley (Steam)
4/8: Voices From the Sea (Steam)
4/10: X-Note (Steam)
4/11: To the Moon (Steam)
4/19: Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland (PS3)
4/19: Aquapazza: Aquaplus Dream Match (PS3)
6/19: Steins;Gate (PS3)

Total: 12 games

It's going to be a little difficult to talk about this since it's a bit complicated (and I think the anime is pretty well known anyway), but I'll do my best ><;

Steins;Gate is an amazing visual novel. I went into it expecting that (as it's currently the second highest rated visual novel on vndb.org), and I was still really blown away on how good it was. It's got humour, suspense, interesting characters, and some really good twists. It starts out with mad scientist Okabe plus his friends Mayuri and Itaru, as they mess around making weird inventions. At first the visual novel is pretty light-hearted, as the team discovers that they've invented a microwave that can send texts to the past. However, after messing around with it for a while, shit hits the fan really hard and they have to use their machine to fix all the things they've messed with.

I can't really explain much more than that (due to spoilers and not being very good at describing things :|), but after that "shit hitting the fan" moment, it got very difficult for me to stop reading it. I found that the beginning section was also very enjoyable to read, as I enjoyed the character building and humour, but some people seem to find it a bit slow.

Another kind of minor negative is that the choice system is a little odd. You will get texts on Okabe's phone from time to time, and you can respond (or choose not to respond) with certain keywords. Which keywords you send will determine if you get one of three endings (one of which being the True ending). To get the True ending, you need to send all of the correct keywords, which is nearly impossible unless you are following a guide. If you miss even one keyword, you pretty have to guess which one(s) you missed and try again. The True ending is definitely the BEST ending you can get, so I'm glad I used a guide to get it, but it was a still a bit annoying that I had follow one in the first place. You can also get a few other endings (which end the visual novel earlier) by choosing NOT to send emails at certain points of the game, but these are a little more obvious to get and can easily be gotten later if you missed one.

So if you're interested in visual novels (which I don't think includes too many people here ha), I strongly encourage you to get past the opening and read this! If you've already watched the anime then the recommendation is not as strong, as apparently it follows the True ending pretty well, but it might still be worth a read if you really enjoyed the anime and are curious about the other endings (which are all quite good imo).

Previously: 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010

I had messed around with Amplitude back on the PS2 a bit, but it never took - I found it to be less fun than other futuristic racers and way more challenging than other timed-press games, so I gave it a pass. I don't like Guitar Hero/Rock Band games. Still, a recent discount on Amplitude on the PSN made me decide to give the game another shot, and I am glad I did. I found the challenge to be more fair than I recall (I played through the campaign on "intermediate"), the updated visuals to be worth checking out, and the whole package very well put together. It might be worth a look for you even if you have not been on board with games of this type in the past...

Slave of God is a free experimental game by the wonderful Stephen Lavelle. I will say more about this one at another point, but I am working on a larger thing surrounding his work and am trying to collect my thoughts there... Suffice to say, it is trippy and confusing, and even though I have played it off and on for the past year, I didn't know until last night that there was a way to beat the game. Since I discovered there is, up it goes on my list!

Sorcery! 3 represents Inkle's continued effort to bring Steve Jackson's classic Sorcery! series into the digital world. As with the first two Sorcery! games, Inkle has done a magnificent job recreating a game book into a video game book. (It is highly recommended that you play through the first two Sorcery! games before taking on this third entry.) In the third Sorcery!, the player crosses the Baklands, a vast and dangerous wasteland, attempting to find and defeat seven magical serpents before they can warn their master of the player's approach.

Image

Inkle has made doing so an absolute joy, by crafting Sorcery! 3 to be highly non-linear in an open world, with a time traveling mechanic to boot. (That also means that Sorcery! 3 can take three times as long to complete versus the first two games.) To take something as complex as that concept, and implement it successfully, speaks volumes of Inkle's amazing skills. Sorcery! 3 is a marvelous experience and is the most impressive mobile game I've yet played.

Image

I managed to find and defeat four of the seven serpents by the time I reached the end, and I had a great time doing so. But keep in mind, this is a game BOOK, with a word count approaching 500,000. So don't let the pretty pictures fool you, if you don't enjoy reading, you may not enjoy this as much as I did.

I loved the first two games, but the third blows them away in content and complexity. I can't recommend it enough. Inkle has confirmed the fourth and final book will be out later this year. I am super stoked to finish off the series.

http://www.inklestudios.com/blog/

And...

For the first time, we'll be integrating 3D models into the map. These models are still being hand-painted by our cartographer/illustrator Mike Schley, and we've got to make sure they play nicely with the in-game camera. We've also got an epilogue sequence to build, that will suitably reward players who have made the journey all the way from Analand to Mampang and returned with the Crown of Kings intact.

Also the fourth's OST is entirely recorded from live orchestration!

Shit will be epic. I might have to upgrade muh smartphone. :?

So, as usual, I've gotten way behind on my updates. Rather than spend 2 hours writing a big wall of text no-one will want to read though, I figure I'll update one game a day for the rest of the week to get caught up. That said, lets start with:

Mystic Quest
Image
Mystic Quest was one of my Summer Challenge games, and the only handheld game on my list this year - hence why it got beaten quickly and nothing else has been finished since. Console time is hard to find

Anyway, Mystic Quest might no be well known to some of you, and it's status as a classic therefore might be called into question, so let's called it by it's other names. In PAL land, it's Mystic Quest (possibly to tie it to Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, which was called Mystic Quest Legend over here). In America though, it goes by the name 'Final Fantasy Adventure' and in Japan, it's Seiken Densetsu. It's also the first game in Squaresoft's Secret of Mana series.

Image
However, Final Fantasy Denstsu Quest is a very different game to it's successors. It might loosely be described as an Action RPG by some, but in all honesty there is far more of the 'action' and far less of the 'RPG''. What it plays most like in actuality is The Legend of Zelda series - you explore an overworld, collecting new items to proceed (in this game they're all equippable weapons), attacking enemies with a button press and exploring dungeons to progress.

The game does have a few more RPG elements though. For one, you level up. There are 4 stats to worry about - Power which determins your attack, Endurance which determines your HP, Wisdom which determines your MP and Will which determines your power meter. This charges up when you're not attacking, and when fully charged you can unleashed a powerful special move. Will is the least useful stat by far, but you'll get plenty of it as you level anyway. Once you level up, you can choose a stat to increase by 2. Each stat has 2 associated stats that will increase by 1 each if you choose it too - for example, gaining 2 power also grants 1 endurance and 1 will. Unfortunately, no stat choice yeilds Power, Endurance and Wisdom, which would be the ideal combination.

Image
In addition to levelling, you can also find armour, weapons, shields and helmets to equip. Armor and helmets determine your defence, shields can blocks various enemy projectiles, and weapons work in different ways as well as icnreasing attack. Some weapons are needed to progress - sickles cut bushes, axes cut trees, chains let you hook across gaps etc. Weapons are assigned to one of the 2 face buttons, with magic and items assigned to the other. You'll need to switch a lot, so expect some tedious pause menu navigating to come up a lot.

One of Mystic Adventure Fantasy's favourite mechanics is granting you an AI partner to assist you. These vary in usefulness, often just shooting randomly and not being much help. They all have a special skill you can ask of them though, such as healing, offering a shop or letting you ride your chocobo, so they can be handy even if they're as thick as a plank.

The dungeon designs in Mystic Quest are more simplistic than the very clever designs of Zelda on GB, and are more akin to the original Zelda - puzzles rarely get more intricate than 'break down the wall' and when they do they're often a pain - especially puzzles which require you to freeze enemies, as screwing it up means walking 8 screens back to make the enemies respawn.

Bosses are often exciting and fairly tricky early on, although later encounters go down easily, The story is compelling in a badly translated, limited text early 90s RPG kinda way. I love that the villain's name is Dark Lord and I love how many bits of odd grammar and deliberately inaccurate spelling have been used to fit the script into windows of about 25 characters of text. The game also throws new scenarios at you constantly. It's a good 12-15 hours long, but it feels very fast paced and each little section of the game passes by quickly. The music is also fantastic, and the overworld theme in particular should be better remembered than it is.

I liked Mystic Quest a lot. It's a well featured, well designed and fun game for the original Game Boy that stands amongst the best action adventure of the system. It's no Zelda perhaps, but it deserves to rub shoulders with the best as it's an amazing experience for the system. Every should go play it.

Also, for the record, I like this game more than it's sequel (which I also liked). I prefer the action-adventure focus here to the Action RPG bent of it's successor.
