Total: 100

Previously: 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010

I finished off 2016 by beating five games in one day . I beat my first ever game for the Neo Geo Pocket Color - Bust A Move Pocket - by playing all 99 levels of it through a chunk of the day on Friday and finishing around 12:30am Saturday. It is a charming little version of the game, even if the repetitive music was a little grating by the end.

Dr. Langeskov is the first game from Stanley Parable co-creator's William Pugh's Crows Crows Crows studio. It features some of the same kind of humor that made Stanley Parable so memorable, even if it is quite a bit shorter. It should only take anyone interested about 30 minutes to play through, and it is free on Steam.

Superhot is really something special. The time-moves-when-you-move idea is implemented quite well, and at its best moments it was as intense/twitchy and enjoyable as one of the Hotline Miami games (it similarly often feels more like a puzzle game than a shooter). I don't know that I was too enamored with the "story" grafted over top of everything, but that's not the reason to give this a look. It is a fantastic proof-of-concept game that I would love to see as the basis for a more full fledged title in the near future.

Nidhogg was way better that I expected it to be, and the campaign mode really delivers on the promise of making you feel like you are engaged in epic silver screen sword-fights. The game is well animated, visually striking, and has a rockin' soundtrack to boot. I feel bad that I let this languish in my library as long as I did.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch was equal parts frustrating and funny. There are some great ideas here (e.g. the arcade games that you play at one point, the opening "tutorial" stage, the underwater sections) but also some other ideas that highlight the problems with taking the control scheme in certain directions (like having to climb things). The script is fairly well done for the most part (typical "video game humor" abounds), and it was a decent enough way to wrap up 2016 before settling in to watch the ball drop.
---------------

This year is by a healthy margin the most "modern-centric" list I've compiled before the end of the year, with a scant 17 games that were played on a retro system making the list. That's ok, though, because I think I really branched out a bit this year in terms of genre; almost 20% of the list are games that I couldn't neatly characterize into a particular genre, and even some of the ones that are relegated to a genre in the stats below aren't necessarily neat fits. I am surprised by the absence of some systems (this is the second year in a row with no DC or SAT games, and there was nothing here on an Atari platform), but glad to see more love for Nintendo consoles that I typically show (16% is actually pretty good for me). Next year I'd like to see more RPGs, and if I stick to my resolutions, there will be a fair amount more retro titles here too.

Some Stats:

Total Games: 100

Modern: 83 across 10 systems (PC: 26, PS4: 20, 3DS: 8, iOS: 7, PSVR: 5, Vita: 5, X1: 4, PS3: 3, 360: 3, Wii U: 2)
Retro: 17 across 8 systems (PS1: 4, Genesis: 4, GB: 3, NES: 2, SNES: 1, Arcade: 1, SMS: 1, NGPC: 1)

Genre Breakdown:
Other: 19
FPS: 16
Shmup: 13
Platformer: 10
Racing: 8
Fighting: 7
Run-n-Gun: 6
Puzzle: 6
RPG: 3
Third Person Shooter: 3
Twin Stick Shooter: 3
Rail Shooters: 2
Rhythm: 2
Click 'N Point: 2

Best game I've finished that was released this year: Can't decide! Doom, Uncharted 4, Titanfall 2, Abzu, Bound, and Thumper all make the shortlist...
Best retro game I finished for the first time: Parasite Eve

Total since I started keeping track (2010): 635

Here's my set of numbers:

Games beaten this year: 91
Games beaten last year: 112

Games beaten by platform:

32X 1
3DS 6
DC 1
GC 4
Genesis 1
N64 4
NES 4
Nintendo DS 1
PC 47
PS1 1
PS4 7
PSN 1
PSP 1
PSX 1
SNES 3
TG-CD 2
Wii U 2
Xbox 360 1
Xbox One 2
3DS 1

Once again you see that I have a heavy PC focus (which makes sense, given the PC is the place I have the most games by far). There's two interesting things here compared to last year. First is that there isn't a major secondary platform like I had with the NES last year. The second is that I was playing across 33% more platforms than last year.

Games beaten by genre:

Action 8
FPS 12
Platformer 12
Puzzle 1
RPG 27
RTS 10
Shmup 1
Simulation 1
Sports 1
Strategy 9
Survival 9

Last year I was pretty balanced between FPS, Platformers, and RPGs. This year I not only finished more RPGs but I finished a lot less of the other two. Additionally I got several more Strategy titles in there compared to last year, as well as a few more RTS's. Since I skewed towards longer games I'm not surprised I wasn't able to make the 100 club this year, though I came close.

I just used a Pivot Chart in Excel. I always forget how to do 'em up, so I had to do some quick Googling to get things right. I didn't spend a ton of time cleaning it up and making it super-pretty, though. I thought it worked better than just listing my stuff, though, and it ended up a bit faster in the long run, too. :)

I've still got 2 reviews of games beaten to write up sometime, but for now, end of year stats!

Total games beaten: 77 - Pretty standard amount for me, although more short games than usual means I think this wasn't my best year for beating games

Physical games beaten: 48
Digital games beaten: 29

More digital representation than usual, most of which was on 3DS

Console games beaten: 36
Handheld games beaten: 35
PC games beaten: 6

A pretty even balance between handheld and home consoles - that means I've played more home console games than normal though, as I usually lean more to handheld.

Games beaten by generation:
Console:
3rd gen (NES/SMS): 5
4th gen (SNES/MD/PCE): 11
5th gen (N64/Saturn/PS1/VB): 5
6th gen (GC/DC/PS2/Xbox): 7
7th gen (Wii/PS3/360): 4
8th gen (Wii U/PS4): 1

Not much modern representation. A lot of my console gaming was quite old-school - I find it hard to have the time to play longer console games

Handheld:
early 8 bit (GB/GG): 5
late 8 bit (GBC/NGPC): 1
6th gen (GBA): 1
7th gen (DS/PSP): 1
8th gen (3DS/Vita): 27

This number comes for a few reasons - I've beaten most of my old handheld games already for one! The 8th gen number is inflated by all the 3DS eShop games I played this year on the train to work.

Breakdown by console:
Wii U: 0
Wii U eShop: 1
Wii: 0
GC: 5
N64: 1
SNES: 3
NES: 4
VB: 1
3DS: 2
3DS eShop: 16
DS: 1
GBA: 1
GBC: 0
GB: 5
Pokemon Mini: 0
PS4: 0
PS3: 1
PSN PS3: 2
PS2: 1
PS1: 1
Vita: 5
PSN Vita: 4
PSP: 0
DC: 2
Saturn: 2

I had a friend spend a few days over and we spent a good amount of time playing co-op games together. This one we ended up beating as we could credit feed as much as was necessary.

One of my fondest memories with the same friend was the time we completed Golden Axe together in the arcade as kids. This game could be described as a direct descendant of that one, with the same basic mechanics making up the bulk of the gameplay. Added are some light RPG mechanics of leveling up and a basic implementation of magic that one would find in the Dungeons & Dragons pen and paper games.

I liked much about this game, as I did its prequel, but I did find some frustrations with this one (at least during this playthrough). I played the dwarf, and he stopped leveling up after reaching 12. My friend played the Cleric and he continued to gain levels almost every time we passed an area. Not sure if it was a bug or if I was doing something wrong. Also there seem to be at least a couple of attacks in the game that are unavoidable and instant kills. I could of course just press continue while playing on the WiiU, but it seems almost inexcusable for an arcade game.

Those irritations aside, I did have a good time playing and it was a worthwhile couch co-op experience. This is a game with significant room for improving at - in one playthrough you may go from button mashing to understanding some basic strategies, but I could see repeated play leading to far more skill in effectively making your way through the games branching paths.

And that is all I beat in 2016. I've flirted with the ending of a couple more games and hope to finish them soon.

72 games is a new personal best for games finished in a single year. Although, four of those were games I had beaten before, which I don't prefer doing. Three of those four were the UGA Dreamcast games, which ultimately reaffirmed the studio's brilliance in my mind; So that's acceptable.

I also finished 15 games that I had played a significant amount of in the past, but never beat, which is something I'm really happy about. It's nice to be able to pull games back out from clutches of backlog purgatory. That leaves 53, new to me, games I finished this year.

I would have liked to get in some more Sega CD and PC Engine games, but them's the breaks.

Now I think I'll hand out a few awards.

-Punching Above Their Weight-Classes (games that are much better than their reputation):
Rockman & Forte; Sparkster (GEN); Kirby: Air Ride; Starfox Assault; Groove on Fight; Dynamite Deka 2; Berserk; Zombie Revenge.

-The Disappoint-ies (games not as good as I thought they should be, or was lead to believe they should be):
L.O.L. - Lack of Love; Super Metroid; Mario Story (AKA Paper Mario); Lumino City; Braid; Doubutsu Banchou (AKA Cubivore); Ducktales; Chip 'n Dale; Dark Half; Alcahest; Tactics Ogre.
Special Mention: Super Mario World, for continuing to support my opinion of it. At least I can turn it into a frisbee, now that it's beaten.

-Most ridiculous premise, that still works: Linda Cube; Dynamite Deka 2.

-Most egregious stereotyping: Gyakuten Saiban 3; Ogre Battle.

-Best Voice Acting: Tactics Ogre; Space Channel 5 - Part 2; Berserk.

-"Best" Voice Acting: Zombie Revenge; Biohazard 2.
