61. Mirror's Edge: Catalyst - Playstation 4 - June 12

Image

Mirror's Edge: Catalyst is a game I've been anticipating for years. I played the first Mirror's Edge three or four years ago, and I was hooked on it from the start. When Catalyst got announced, I was one of the only ones I knew who was actually excited for it. For those who may not know, Mirror's Edge is what I would call a first person platformer, though most critics seem to call it just "action adventure." You play as Faith, a "runner" who lives off the grid and outside the law in a future dystopian world ruled by corporations.

Image

Now this game has gotten mixed reviews, and to a certain extent, I agree with some of the common criticisms that I've seen, but rather than "mixed," I would call this game solidly "positive." Not a game for the ages like Xenoblade Chronicles or The Last of Us, but definitely a good one. The biggest change from the original game to Catalyst (aside from the graphical boost that comes from being released a generation later) is that Catalyst is an open world game whereas the first game was a fairly linear Point-A-to-Point-B game. That's what a lot of critics have been citing as a positive, but honestly, I'm lukewarm on the addition of the open world. By no means is the open world bad or detracting from the game like, say, the original No More Heroes. No, the open world here works but I don't feel like it really adds anything to the game. The open world is rather bland, to be honest, with the only "excitement" being infrequent enemy encounters and collectibles (which I, personally, felt pretty unmotivated to hunt down and collect). I'm not going to say that the game was better when it was linear, but I also don't think it's better being open world.

Image

Now what a lot of reviews I've been criticize is the story. The story wasn't amazing or anything (certainly not after playing Spec Ops: The Line last week), and there was definitely a lot of room for improvement as well as portions that should have been better explained and better fleshed out, but the story was interesting overall. It was interesting to find out more about K-Sec, the corporation controlling the city, and the immediate plot of the game kept me engaged and interested, especially the second half. Part of why the game leaves some things, I know, is because this was a prequel - a lot of the story is continued in the first game (of which I, of course, remember almost nothing).

Image

What the game excels at, however (and this is a minor thing to most people), is that it's actually entertaining to get to the start of a mission. As in most all open world games, you have to traverse to the starting location for your missions, but because the game is almost constant parkour, it's actually fun to get around the city. It's not all that interesting, mind you, given the aforementioned blandness of the open world, but the actual mechanics of the game is a lot of fun, so you don't really mind running from one end of the city to the other.

Image

All in all, the decent story and the fun gameplay mechanics make this an overall good game. The parkour is extremely fun, and the combat is pretty fluid, although there's some fine-tuning that I think could have been done to the flow of the combat physics. It's not amazing, but it's definitely worth playing, especially if you're a fan of platforming or the climbing/jumping aspects of Assassin's Creed. If you see this game for $20 or less, I'd definitely urge you to pick it up. If you're a fan of either of the two things I listed or of the original Mirror's Edge, I'd say go ahead and pick it up now or in the near future. It may not stand out years down the line as an 8th gen classic, but it's definitely a fun game that ought not be missed.

If you are interested in a fun split-screen co-op cover shooter, Fuse gets the job done. It's got quality action, nice shooting mechanics, and cool weapons. What it doesn't have is an engaging story or varied gameplay. You will be cover shooting a lot, and that's all you'll be doing. Due to high repetitiveness, I wouldn't recommend Fuse as a single player game, but as a co-op campaign experience (up to four local split-screen players) Fuse is worth lighting off.

So afar this year....
A Wolf Among Us - PS3
House of the Dead: Overkill - Wii

I have 3 daughters, but only 2 that still live at home. The 9 and 11 year olds started the game with me when it first came out. I'd received a gift card from work and used it towards Minecraft: Story Mode - PS3 upon release as a good daddy/daughter activity that might last a while. All three of us took turns playing parts of the game, but it was mostly the 9 year old that powered us through.
Tonight I had time to finally get my 2 younger daughters to sit down to finish Episode Five of:
Minecraft: Story Mode - PS3

I asked for their thoughts to add to the review. They were happy they completed the first 5 episodes included with the disc.
Things they liked:
The story was good, and they liked the screen prompts required to keep the character alive and fighting through the game.
Things they didn't like:
The wither storm was pretty scary for my nine year old.
Also:
Reuben. We all teared up a bit. That's some pig.

Parental/gamer thoughts:
I'm a console Minecraft player, and was not sure what to expect with this game not relying on traditional Minecraft controls. I'd recently played through A Wolf Among Us, and it helped set expectations for me. (Thankfully, Minecraft: Stoy Mode was not nearly as buggy. There were very few bugs or performance issues.)
I thoroughly enjoyed the well-written episodes 1-4. They were very gripping, and even emotional.
Episode 5 probably leads into the DLC for Episodes 6-8, but it felt very disconnected from 1-4. I'll likely buy the new DLC episodes, but for this review's purposes, I'm calling the game "beaten."

I'll be going back sometime to play the Walking Dead stories, and I just saw screenshots for a Batman Telltale Games release. It looks super nice - I'm sure Telltale will have some nice things in store for it.
Systems: Pong, Odyssey2, Atari 2600, NES, CDX, SNES, N64, Saturn, DC, PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, GCN, Wii, Xbox360, OUYA
Handhelds: GB, GBC, GBA, DS lite, DSi, Virtual Boy (<< is that even a portable?)
EM Pinballs: Bally Dixieland, Gottlieb Flying Carpet
SS Pinball: GTB Circus, GTB Count-Down, GTB Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Stern Lectronamo, Stern Galaxy, Bally Black Pyramid

Damn you Elkin for beating Catalyst before me! I knew I should have finished it off before getting sucked into the Four Job Fiesta. That's what I get for checking the site Saturday afternoon and discovering The Run was already over.

17. The Legend of Zelda (NES) -- Summer Games Challenge!
The first time I played a Zelda game was at my babysitter's house. We dragged the NES out at my request, and I got to experience a whole bunch of games my family never owned. I remember being really interested in Zelda II, but a few years later it was the original Zelda that happened to be in the small showcase at our favorite TV/VCR repair shop one afternoon. I think the owner must have given us a deal for being such regular customers. Seriously, we brought in our stereo turntable pretty much every Christmas because it wasn't playing Bing Crosby right.

The cart didn't come with a manual, and my babysitter hadn't had hers. The result is that I had no freaking clue what I was supposed to do in this game. The lack of direction was frustrating to me. It didn't occur to me to draw a map; grinding for cash was tedious; the Lost Woods never freaking worked. I had zero friends with NESes or NES know-how. I had no patience and died a lot. To my young mind, the game felt incomplete and poorly planned. So I moved on. Later I would be blown away by A Link to the Past, but the first installment in the series never truly beckoned me back.

This summer, though, I decided it was time to give this game a real shot. I was going to keep an open mind, I was going to appreciate this for its historical significance... and I was going to draw a map.

The map made all the difference.

In the end, I had a surprisingly good time with this. I only needed help with two puzzles or so, and reached out to friends for hints. Everything else I figured out easily. It made me wonder just what was going on with me when I was eight. Had this really been so hard?

I think the thing that amazed me most was how many staples of the series were established here. I came across enemies whose gimmicks I knew because I recognized them from Ocarina of Time. That led to the weird sensation of knowing something from the series' chronological future that I had experienced in my own past, which basically made me feel like a time-traveler. "Oh, I know YOU GUYS," I said out-loud at the television. "You want to eat my SHIELD. Well you CAN'T HAVE IT STAY THE @#&$ AWAYYY!" That was neat.

Also, that moment when the Lost Woods finally worked.

Glad I played it, but probably not doing the B quest ever. Maybe when I'm in a nursing home.

18. Metroid II: Return of Samus (GB) -- Summer Games Challenge!
I played the original Metroid last summer for the Summer Games Challenge, and it became my favorite NES game ever in the span of one month. I was amazed by how quickly and unquestionably it had rooted itself in my psyche. Not long after that I picked up a copy of Metroid II: Return of Samus, anticipating making Samus adventures a summer tradition.

Since I'd gotten into the mapping mood with Zelda, I went on to this one next. This one was crazy. Unlike the first Metroid, whose sections were in different colors and always had either relatively tight ceilings or walls, the Game Boy installment is not color-coded (although playing on a GBA SP or GameCube really helps in some ways with that) and includes huge cavernous areas that made mapping incredibly challenging. I like to explore terrain as thoroughly as I can, and I also do not have the strongest spacial skills -- so having giant, largely inaccessible open areas made it impossible for me to get a handle on things for quite some time. It was a frustrating feeling, but I loved it; it made the adventure more real to me, because this is probably exactly what Samus would be feeling.

And let's just talk about Samus' feelings for a second. This game did something amazing for me. I went through it thinking, "Okay, the game wants me to kill everything, I get it, that's what games do... but I'm feeling less and less okay with this, in-universe." Not for one second did I think the game was deliberately trying to make me feel those conflicting emotions, until the very end. And then I realized Samus was me, and I was Samus, and OH MY GOD THE EMOTIONS.

I don't believe I've identified this much with any video game character I couldn't make story choices for. I just can't shut up about it.

I'm looking forward to next summer, where I continue on with Super Metroid. Everybody's been so good about not spoiling anything for me in the Summer Games Challenge Thread, so no spoilers... but believe me, I know I'm going to have my heart stomped on. And it's going to be terrible, and amazing.

You should play Shadow of the Colossus. Like, now.

I'm super looking forward to when you play Super Metroid.

The only reason I consider Metroid II to be the weakest in the series is the lack of a map. The original Metroid's world is small enough that you can memorize the critical path (or stumble upon it if you're good at visualizing) but Metroid II's world is not too much smaller than Super Metroid's and far more complicated than the original's. That's the biggest reason I'm excited about AM2R; we're getting a map.

33. Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars Director's Cut (iOS)
34. Virtua Racing (PS2)

Broken Sword is a very good point-and-click adventure game. It is very well animated; it is well written and well designed; and it is full of memorable characters and locations. The puzzles are also well-implemented, even if many of them boil down to "talk to person A, observe object X, talk to person A again, etc." It is also quite long, clocking in at nearly 11(!) hours. The game has a great ending, but I am not sure I will continue with the series. I am glad to have another classic in the point-and-click adventure genre under my belt, however.

Virtua Racing is pretty great, an the PS2 port is simply fantastic. The blocky graphics are as stylized as pixel-art, and IMO, they have aged much better than the muddy textures found in later games. (The PS2 port looks even better than the arcade original and moves at a silky-smooth 60 FPS. It is easily the best way to play the game today.) The game also controls wonderfully, and it plays a little closer to a racing simulator than an arcade racer. I "beat" the game by finishing first in every race in the arcade mode, and I also beat the PS2 port's gran prix mode (finishing first in every race). The gran prix mode was very easy, but completing the arcade mode was quite difficult. (The game has a strange difficulty curve. Finishing the "beginner" track within the time limit is easy, but finishing it in first place is very difficult. Reaching first place on the "advanced" track is not too difficult, but finishing the course within the time limit requires nearly flawless racing. The "intermediate" track is actually the easiest to finish in first place.)
