That makes so much more sense now. Ultima 2 is installed, but I am holding off for now. Back on my Spider Solitaire habit.

And it goes 1, 2, 3, 4 if you go in a spiral. Yay for the magic of video games violating normal geometry!

Games Beaten in 2016 So Far - 81

March (8 Games Beaten)
April (13 Games Beaten)
May (6 Games Beaten)
June (13 Games Beaten)
July (7 Games Beaten)
August (6 Games Beaten)
81. Metal Gear Solid - Playstation - August 15
This is a game that's been on my shelf for a few years but that I had never gotten around to playing. I always figured I wouldn't much care for it. I've always recognized the series as extremely well made, but I really don't like stealth games that much; I prefer to sprint in, guns blazing, and rack up a body count that would put Josef Mengele to shame. I decided a few days ago, however, that this was a game that I NEEDED to play. For Heaven's sake, I've played through every main series Call of Duty game for the sake of being able to judge them fairly; I should, at the very least, play through a game that's legitimately good even if I don't personally like the style. So I started juggling Metal Gear Solid with Monster Monpiece on my Vita.
I have to admit, however, now that I've finished the game....I REALLY liked it. I still wish I'd had running in and murdering everything in a hail of bullets as a real option, but I'd be lying if I said that - once I got into it - I didn't thoroughly enjoy the stealth. It's still not my preferred playstyle, but damn if they didn't get it right in this game. I suspect most people are familiar with a game as legendary as Metal Gear Solid, so I won't spend any time going into the plot and rather just give my take on it.
I'll admit up front that, being terrible at stealth games, I played the game on easy. I think even I probably could have handled normal, though; except for the actual Metal Gear boss battle, none of the game gave me much real difficulty. There were some segments or bosses that were a good challenge for me, but that one boss fight was the only one that was "hard" for me at all, and honestly, once I figured out the trick to beating it on my second try, even that one was extremely manageable. That is, however, probably due in no small part to the merciful health and ammo drops throughout the game that my difficulty setting allowed.
There's really not a whole lot more for me to say about the game. I do think, however, that the cutscene at the very end TOTALLY ruined the series mood that the preceeding nine hours established for me. I get that it fit with the narrative, but it felt like a rather jarring character shift for Snake, and I just wasn't a fan. It felt forced. Other than that one part, however, I really don't have any complaints for the game. It truly was a remarkable game, and I'm glad that I finally got around to playing it. I look forward to starting Metal Gear Solid 2...eventually.

I beat Cally's Caves 3 just the other day. This is a mobile title that migrated to Steam. It doesn't play like a mobile game, IMO, so that's fine. The main character is a young girl who starts with a pistol but finds other weaponry. You level your weapons and yourself. There's also a final form for every weapon. Every few levels the weapons evolve in ways that improve or alter their behavior. Some levels are small, some are fairly large, but since it's all platforming and shooting it's cool. It's not really a Metroidvania, but you can go back to previous levels, and some previous bosses are very useful for leveling your weapons. The graphics are colorful and stylized and the music is rather interesting. There aren't tracks for various levels or level types, but rather a loop of several sufficiently long tracks that cycle through and then repeat.
Watch for a sale and pick it up on Steam.

It was 1998. A definite product of its time.
I'm not saying some of those final scenes are good, but they're hilarious. You'll have to get the Otacon one next time.

Partridge Senpai's 2016 Beaten List
42. Beautiful Katamari (360)
This review will probably be shorter than my past few, mostly because it's Katamari! If you don't know what it is, then it's really easy to describe, and if you do know what it is, then you probably already have an opinion on it, so it's not really that worth dribbling on about here. I'd already loved the first two games, especially the second one, and this game reaffirmed that well-deserved love. The only part that made me sad was to learn that this was really the last real Katamari game on a console, with the PS3 one just being a compilation and not so much a new game of its own ;A;
It's Katamari Damacy: You use both joysticks as tank controls to roll around a big ball that sticks to anything smaller than it that you roll into. It's wacky, it's Japanese, and it's very very fun. The King of the Cosmos is his usual campy, cocky self, spitting tons of weird lines of both praise (of himself) and of demeaning (you, his son). The art style is more or less the same as the PS2 games, which I'm inclined to forgive not only because this was a fairly early 360 title, but also because it means the game has a really good frame-rate that rarely dips, and was immediately noticeable for me. Only in the very final levels when you get SO big that you can see most of the map at once does the game start to chug at all, and even then it certainly doesn't harm gameplay.
In comparison to the first game, it blows it out of the water. The first game had a bit more personality in the writing and had more, better music, but this game just has SO much better levels. There are fewer of them, yes, but gone are the totally wank "collect the biggest X in this area," or "collect only X as much as you can" stages that plagued that game. Now in addition to the missions where you gotta roll a Katamari to X-size, you also need to focus somewhat on the theme of that level (be it toys, cold things, powerful things, energy things, etc.) but that usually isn't too hard.
In comparison to the second game, though it has been a while since I played it, I do recall that game having more levels. I could be remembering it wrong though. Beautiful Katamari I would say is at least on the level of that game, though perhaps not quite as good because that game's writing was very self-referential and sillier, and it had more stages. This game keeps that game's local co-op mode though, so that's nice. The 360 version does have a level full of 360 controllers and consoles though, which made me giggle quite a bit X3. This game is also HARD like the past couple games. Especially the last 3 or 4 stages, you really gotta work to get the Katamari big enough for the goal-size.
Verdict: Highly recommended. It's Katamari! It's silly, it's wacky, and it's above all: fun. Even if you suck at it (like I kinda do, though I like to think not too badly), you'll have fun with the cool environments, neat art style, and fantastic music. I can also speak from experience to the fact that the co-op mode is a fantasticly fun thing to do with someone who doesn't play video games too often, or even with one who does. I will admit, this is really just a slightly lesser version of We Love Katamari but on a 360. However, if you can get past that, then it's a fantastic game that's still a boat-load of fun.
Katamari Forever review likely coming soon-ish :I

Re: Games Beaten 2016
man, i wanted to love Beautiful Katamari (so happy that grocery store level made it into Forever), but that was literally my first experience of day 1 (or so?) on-disc DLC, and it hurt my experience overall

Yep. Changes depending if you 'beat' the torture sequence or not iirc.

I beat both of them, so I guess I got the "good" ending?
