But then he'd miss out on Dark Crusade, the best in that series.

Chibi-Robo Park Patrol (DS)

It's Chibi-Robo on DS. It's really a lot more than I expected from a Chibi-Robo DS game, especially after seeing the style of play that the newest one had. It's a really nice adaptation of the Gamecube game's style though. There's a lot less content in terms of areas to bum around in, but the writing is still very silly and wacky. It even has a sort of Captain Rainbow element in how you help the other toys around the park.

Verdict: If you really like games like the first Chibi-Robo and Animal Crossing, you'll like this game. Definitely not for everyone, but this studio's game never have been.

65. Assault Suits Valken|SNES|1992|mech shooter|1h 23m|8/10

Assault Suits Valken is the sequel to Assault Suit Leynos, and continues the series design of hardcore mech shooting action. Valken improves on Leynos in lots of meaningful ways. Obviously the graphics are much more detailed, but mission design and variety have been greatly improved as well. Weapons have less variety than Leynos, but are better balanced to compensate. The soundtrack is still excellent as was in Leynos, but Valken's has more tracks available thankfully. Perhaps the most meaningful change, is an actual difficulty curve. Assault Suits Valken is quite playable up until its final two missions, but then the game because brutally difficult like Leynos was from the start.

Assault Suits Valken did get a USA release under the name "Cybernator", but the USA release gutted all the cinematic portions, which relegated the plotline to practically nothing. So I recommend playing the original Japanese release using Aeon Genesis' English fan translation. Otherwise, you'll miss out on the great character portraits drawn by the legendary Satoshi Urushihara! I would not recommend Assault Suits Valken to the average gamer, just because of how difficult it eventually becomes. However, if you're a lover of all things mecha, do not hesitate to jump into the cockpit and blow a whole lot of stuff up.

I didn't find Cybernator to actually be that hard overall myself!

Yeah, I didn't think it was back in '99. Maybe I'm just getting old or something, but Valken kicked my ass pretty hard 17 years later. Took a few restarts to finally get through it all, especially that damned escape sequence from the presidential palace and the final boss. It's one of those games that you quickly get better at though, learning patterns and where the restoratives are hidden and such.

(GameFAQs community rates this game as TOUGH so it's not just me though. )

I think I beat it on my 4th playthrough, which for an old-school game like this is fairly uncommon! Key to winning seems to be 'learn to use the shield more' and 'power up the laser asap'

I, too, tend to find older games much harder than I did when I was a kid. Not sure why.

Well, tonight is Magic night and tomorrow Doom unlocks right as I get home, so that's going to be next. But after that the plan is to do Dark Crusade and Soulstorm. Mostly because I really want to play as the Sisters of Battle and I don't want to skip Dark Crusade to do so.

I seem to be having the opposite reaction. Wondering when the other shoe will drop and I become an absolute scrub.
