Games Beaten 2016
Re: Games Beaten 2016
He told us a story about how one time a pizza guy comes to his house when he wasn't expecting one. He starts to say "I never asked... you know what, it's fine".
Re: Games Beaten 2016
Woo, legit run through ActRaiser 2 is done. That's some serious business!

Nice to finally have this one under my belt. Sure, I did finish the GBA port a couple years ago but I still felt like I had unfinished business with my childhood NES copy. And now that I have a Twin Fami I gave the floppy a spin too.
Surely it goes without saying that this is a great game. The foreboding alien atmosphere is unmatched. And the soundtrack is severely underrated - that title screen theme may be the best track to ever appear in an NES game. I managed to finish the game in under three hours and found out that Samus is a girl!!!
Time to reacquire Metroid II, as I lost my copy some 20 years ago.

Just going to copy/paste what I wrote in the FPS thread:
I just beat Shogo 2.
Here's what you do, take all the CoD's, take all their greatest campaign strengths and moments, COMBINE them... and what you get is still not even half the awesomeness of Titanfall's 2 campaign.
I just wrapped that up today, and CoD eat your heart out. It reminded me more of Doom (4) and Halo in the greatest ways, or like Killzone except without the quirks and vastly better. Valve like moments with crazy cool puzzles and gimmick abilities for some levels and a fantastic character that is a damn robot. The game is just oozing with simple fun and charm. Both the campaign and multiplayer are an absolute home run. Get it.

146) Chip 'N' Dale's Rescue Rangers (NES)
147) Gain Ground (GEN)
Always have had a fascination with this game. The idea of building up your army throughout the action stages just seemed cool. And for the most part, it is! Some of your troops are far and away better than others. The guy that looks like the dwarf in Golden Axe is particularly effective.
Anyway, it's really a stage-based Gauntlet. Without the enemy spawn points, of course. In fact, you've even got an enemy counter to let you know how many are left. You can save troops by walking over their icon and leading them successfully to the exit. Don't kill all the enemies before doing so, though! You won't get them otherwise.
I vaguely remembered that this was ported from the arcade version. Might have to give that version a go sometime. According to HG101, the Genesis port shrinks the maps quite a bit because of the lack of play area compared to the vertically-oriented playfield of the arcade version.
Pretty fun overall. It can get a bit frustrating sometimes, though.

Glad you asked because I love going into detail about crap like this.
Some changes are super-minor. Like differences in the font and title screen (メトロイド vs. Metroid). As far as sound goes, I notice the difference in the sound effects greater than in the music. For instance, once Mother Brain is defeated the "alarm" is super shrill and annoying in the FDS game.
The huge change made to the NES game is the fact that the save feature is scrapped in favor of a password system. The FDS original has three save slots like Zelda (this is also seen in the first two Castlevania games on FDS as well as Kid Icarus). To delete a save file you select KILL MODE. Damn, that's hardcore.
There's a New Game+ mode on NES that doesn't exist on the FDS. Instead you get simply get a "moneybag" icon next to your save file each time you clear the game. I've read that the requirements for the best ending (or any ending) on FDS are slightly different.
Enemy behavior is slightly different between the two games. I also found that enemies respawned much more quickly on the NES.
Being a disk the FDS game has the requisite load times and disk-flipping. The disk-flips are kept to a minimum, thankfully. Only when you save, load, and beat the game. Load times aren't bad. The game loads when a file is saved and, uh, loaded and each time Samus ascends or descends an elevator. The elevator load times kinda suck. The screen turns black and it feels like the game is gonna shit the bed.
Control felt smoother on NES, though this is likely due to the difference in controller rather than programming.
I think I hit everything I noticed.

I find it most interesting that the enemy behavior patterns were altered. Thanks for the detailed breakdown Bone, that was a lot of fun to read.

Re: Games Beaten 2016
The Cutting Room Floor always has the best details about this stuff.
https://tcrf.net/Metroid
What I noticed most was the enemy respawn rates. For example, in Brinstar there's an energy tank that can be reached only after Samus hops on a frozen enemy. This is tricky and takes a few tries to get the positioning correct (and if you mess up the enemy will unfreeze and move out of position for good). In the FDS it was extremely frustrating because I'd have to putz around a minute or two to get the enemies to respawn, while in the NES I had to just barely walk off the screen and then come back.

Are the physics the same? Can you still unmorph and jump while in midair?
