14. Super C (NES)First Summer Challenge game. I typically avoid sequels for the Challenge, but this one has been hanging over my head for years.
Super C is what you could call a "mission-pack sequel" to
Contra. Anyone familiar with the first game will feel right at home with its successor. It follows a similar structure (eight levels, six of which are side-scrolling) and features the same graphical presentation, gun power-ups, and persistent difficulty.
The biggest change is that the "3D" stages have been scrapped in favor of top-down ones. Your bullets can't travel all the way across the screen in these (then again, the same is true for enemy projectiles) so there's an extra smidge of challenge involved.
I'm pretty decent at
Contra, but found this one much more challenging. The levels are structured differently; there are lots of vertical sections where it becomes harder to dodge enemies. Pitfalls are plentiful throughout the game as well. And while the spread gun could break
Contra it almost feels mandatory here - I shudder to think about taking on those final few bosses without it.
I really enjoyed this one. Play control is flawless and the difficulty is ever-present but manageable after some practice. It's still overshadowed by the first game, however. The music here isn't as swell and the scenery isn't quite as interesting. That said, it's more than a worthy successor to the first game and I'm embarrassed that it took me this long to finish it. Someday I'll conquer
Operation C as well.
