This is the part of the review that intrigued me the most. I really enjoyed Assault when I beat it a few weeks ago, so now I'm very interested on what Zero has to offer, if it's even better than that.

So Star Fox Assault drove me crazy (you can check out my thoughts in the Games Beaten 2015 thread), so the fact that I liked Zero better than Assault should not be seen as a ringing endorsement.

That said, Zero does not deserve the level of vitriol it has been getting. It's a solid enough game.

I actually really enjoy Assault too. I've been looking forward to giving Zero a go and seeing what I think.

Have you played Star Fox Guard at all yet?

Nope; I have absolutely no interest in it and I haven't even gotten around to making space on the shelf for it or adding it to my Backloggery.

After reading how you felt, I totally get why you were as angry at that game as you were. Assault definitely isn't for everyone. Being that so many voices are different and how so much of the game is on foot and not on-rails, I understand why that game is so divisive among fans.

I'm not going to write much about this one since I'm exhausted (I've gotten practically no rest this weekend for one fun reason or another) and there's not a whole lot to say. It's your run-of-the-mill vertical shooter, but it IS on NeoGeo, which instantly gives it +10 points in my book.

First Summer Challenge game. I typically avoid sequels for the Challenge, but this one has been hanging over my head for years.

Super C is what you could call a "mission-pack sequel" to Contra. Anyone familiar with the first game will feel right at home with its successor. It follows a similar structure (eight levels, six of which are side-scrolling) and features the same graphical presentation, gun power-ups, and persistent difficulty.
Image
The biggest change is that the "3D" stages have been scrapped in favor of top-down ones. Your bullets can't travel all the way across the screen in these (then again, the same is true for enemy projectiles) so there's an extra smidge of challenge involved.

I'm pretty decent at Contra, but found this one much more challenging. The levels are structured differently; there are lots of vertical sections where it becomes harder to dodge enemies. Pitfalls are plentiful throughout the game as well. And while the spread gun could break Contra it almost feels mandatory here - I shudder to think about taking on those final few bosses without it.

I really enjoyed this one. Play control is flawless and the difficulty is ever-present but manageable after some practice. It's still overshadowed by the first game, however. The music here isn't as swell and the scenery isn't quite as interesting. That said, it's more than a worthy successor to the first game and I'm embarrassed that it took me this long to finish it. Someday I'll conquer Operation C as well.

I'm sure this is a dumb question that you've answered before in a place I haven't looked, but do you use an emulator to capture those screenshots (or do the lazy thing like me and google it)? They're so damn crisp and clear.

Ahh, I should have thought about that. I'll blame the fact that I was napping until five minutes ago. I just got around to getting some translation patches running on mine.

The R5 is great for screenies.

Lemme give you a tip though. Don't use down+start to bring up the menu to screenshot. This will either start/pause the game or cause your sprite/character to move every time you take a shot. Instead assign a button on the official R5 controller (you don't want to actually play games with that thing) to be a screenshot button. I keep that controller on the futon next to me while I play a game and every so often hit the button to take a shot. Simple as that.
