I think it's a small miracle that they even released HD updates. I sometimes get this sense in the modern age, that nothing is ever really enough for a lot of fanbases. Suppose the team were given the time and resources to complete the remakes, and the Sega rep is correct in his statement that the final product wouldn't maintain the quality of the series: What is the fanbase's reaction then? Is it positive? I highly doubt it. I would anticipate plenty of people bemoaning that they didn't just do an update of the games into HD.

I'll never play the first two games on anything other than a Dreamcast, so it doesn't really make much of a difference to me, but it just feels like we've been promised the moon, and people are still asking for the stars.

Eh, I don't know if you're referring to something you have actually seen or just speculating, but the overwhelming reaction I have seen from most fans online has been positive. Most are appreciative that this footage got shared and accept that it was just not to be. It was obviously a mammoth task and understandable that sadly it didn't ever come to fruition.

I do agree with your assessment of fanbases though, especially ones surrounding niche intellectual properties. Unfortunately, there always seems to be a negative element that can become a very vocal minority that drown out positive voices. I've seen it with a lot of fanbases, particularly in online communities. I think it's important to remember they're not always representative of the overall community. Although I don't think you're quite correct in this instance, I can kinda see it happening with Shenmue 3... There does seem to be large number of people who have gone from "I'd give my left testical for Shenmue 3, I don't care if it's a graphic novel, a book, online script or a Dreamcast game, just continue the story!" to "ugh, the game has been delayed too much, it'll probably play like crap, those character models are too ugly, this game is a laughing stock" *shrug*

Yeah, I think I may have overreacted to a somewhat indignant tone I misperceived in some of the links and quotes in the last few posts. If that's not the reaction of the fandom, at large, then I'm quite happy about that.

I know what you mean about some of the fanbase appearing to sour on the idea of Shenmue 3. I tend to assume those are people who just jumped on board for the kickstarter, and didn't really have much investment in the series beforehand, but who knows.

It's happening! Also, a new screenshot below. Looks like concept art to me, but sweet none the less.

I know I'm pretty much talking to myself, but for those who care, it has now been confirmed a brand new trailer will be shown on March 9th. This will feature an exclusive look at the gameplay and kickstart the marketing campaign for the August launch.

In the meantime, screenshots are being shown off ahead of the gameplay reveal

I am here as well, but I am keeping myself in check because my enjoyment of the series draws the ire of lots of folks. I am very excited about the new screenshots and think the Lan Di redesign is on point. I can not wait for August!

Haha I understand. Lan Di is looking awesome in my opinion. The model looked a bit 'cartoon villain' in the last trailer (although I didn't necessarily think that was a bad thing), but this one looks much closer to the original.

I just can't wait for this new trailer. I hope it shows a decent amount of gameplay and not just like 5 seconds haha.

I don't know that I'd call it ire; we're just all amused at how deeply you enjoy this incredibly flawed game.
