There was also the month and a half I spent playing FFV 10 times for the Four Job Fiesta rather than making any real progress on the backlog. I think I was averaging 15 hours a run, so that's 150 hours I could have used on other games.

101. Alien Isolation - PC

Now this is a good survival horror game. Being hunted by a ruthless killer, being low on supplies, needing to duck and hide to stay alive. And a little bit of Metroidvania thrown in.

Set 15 years after the original movie, your initial goal is to recover the flight recorder of the Nostromo. Given that this is a video game and a title in the Alien franchise, things soon go to hell. Turns out there's something big and scary on the station, and it's not doing anything good for other people's sanity. Other survivors have taken a shoot first, ask questions later approach and there's something wrong with the station's synthetics.

You have combat tools, but combat is not your primary strength. You will die in a couple of gunshots, so you're better off evading enemies or sneaking up on them and stunning them. Or if you're feeling feisty, let them shoot at you while you take cover and have the Alien clean them up, as he is attracted by loud noises.

The game moves you through a variety of sections of the station, and there is a lot of backtracking through areas as you gain more tools for breaking through the various locked doors. That's where the Metroidvania comes in. There was actually more exploration I could have done, but the game never made me feel like it was safe to go exploring, so I definitely missed a lot of secrets. But the game makes survival feel like a real accomplishment.

You also cycle through a variety of foes. The Alien is the implacable foe that will hunt you down but gets bored and wanders off. The humans tend to patrol set areas and can be distracted. The synthetics are melee only and slowly walk at you when they spot you. This makes the basic synthetic the easiest foe, as you have so many options for getting rid of him. The hazmat synthetics, on the other hand, are right bastards, since they are immune to EMP and have truckloads of health. The game is nice enough to keep switching foes on you, so you never get too bored dealing with one kind of foe. And you get a flamethrower midway through which allows you to temporarily drive off the Alien. So right around the time you might be getting sick of being in super hide mode you get another option.

This was definitely a worthy game for the Alien franchise.

101. Alien Isolation - PC
102. Medal of Honor Allied Assault - Spearhead - PC

The first of the two MoH:AA expansion, Spearhead is a fairly short set of three missions during the final Allied push. The first mission has you dropping as a paratrooper on D-Day and disrupting enemy artillery and supply trains. The second is holding the line at the Battle of the Bulge. The third is an infiltration into Berlin to get important documents and then blow shit up with a T-34 shortly before the Soviets capture the city.

Unlike the base game, you are just an ordinary sergeant in this one. The first two missions involve a lot of allied troops working with you, rather than the solo OSS stuff from the base game. You even have to make sure your captain stays alive in the first two missions. It isn't until the third mission that you're back to being on your own and killing everything that moves. And even then at the climax you get a group of allies to fend off Nazi tanks until your bombers arrive.

Aside from the short length, my biggest complaint is the vehicle missions. They feel like they're even more luck/save scum based than in the base game. You can play them perfectly (but that ain't happening in the first one) and still lose because the RNG decided that this run the enemy would nail you with every anti-armor shot rather than missing like in the previous run.

But hey, the main way to get MoH:AA is the Battlechest from GOG anyway, so no reason not to play this one.

Well here I am with my 66th game beat this year. It's possible that this may be the last game I beat in 2015, but I might squeeze a platformer in or something. Considering how many RPGs and meaty action-adventure games I finished this year, I think 66 isn't too bad versus my busy real life schedule. Anyway:

Image

66. Mass Effect (360 | 2007 | WRPG) 9/10

From my HLTB review:

Mass Effect is a tremendously ambitious start to a tremendously ambitious series. It's not often that we get sci-fi RPGs, but Mass Effect accomplishes its realization with gusto. A large galaxy full of intriguing aliens and detailed lore await the player. While the third person shooting and vehicular planet exploration isn't always top notch, the moral freedom of choice remains consistently so. It's wonderful that the player gets to create their own character and mold that character's ethics however they see fit. With great graphics, a solid soundtrack, an impressive plot, excellent dialogue, various love interests, and your own ship and crew to command, it's hard not get sucked into this game's world. Yet the ability to make every decision your own without faux moral guidance remains the brightest star in this galaxy. The amount of player agency in determining moral conundrums is always impressive, allowing the player to have a massive effect on this game indeed.

Both of these games have pretty stingy but nonetheless fun single player components ( various challenges, bot-enabled maps, wave-based fights, etc.). I cleared all of them in both games over the weekend, and am ready to dive into the multiplayer component of the new one sometime soon. Both are pretty impressive for their respective systems, though neither is as solid as the earlier PC SW Battlefront titles IMO.

5. The Legend of Zelda - A Link Between Worlds (3DS)
6. Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)

15. Thomas was Alone (Android)
16. Fire Emblem:Shadow Dragon (NDS)
17. Shovel Knight (WiiU)

18. Mega Man X (WiiU VC)

Finally finished Mega Man X last night. Even though I was playing on VC I didn't leverage any advantage of save states, I played it like I would have played it on a SNES...at least a SNES that never got turned off, as I didn't have to enter passwords, I just kept continuing with every death.

And there were a lot of deaths! I'm not a great Mega Man player, I believe I only ever finished 2 and 3 as a kid, and 3 was only because I owned it so I had an endless amount of time to get reasonably good at it. This game beat me up in places over and over. The first two levels after beating all of the Mavericks I died over and over - whether it was to tricky platforming or tough bosses at the end of the levels. But once I broke through and started to figure out the tough parts things started to click. This game is a good example of tough but fair; put in enough effort and you will learn how to beat it, but you may face some frustration working up to it.

Controls are tight and X's extra abilities are fun and useful. The enemy robots are alright, but some become just a little too easy once you know their patterns and have the right weapon to beat them with. Graphics and music are strong, great presentation overall. I found the last boss brutal - I got okay at the first two parts, but the final piece ate up all my extra energy tanks. The ending was meh, but it is a Mega Man game, I didn't really expect much. It was more about the satisfaction of winning that last battle.

I had a good time overall with Mega Man X. I'm not terribly anxious to get another one of the series, but I likely would jump on a good deal if I see them.

100. Painkiller - Battle Out of Hell - PC

101. Alien Isolation - PC
102. Medal of Honor Allied Assault - Spearhead - PC
103. Medal of Honor Allied Assault - Breakthrough - PC

The other expansion for MoH:AA, Breakthrough ended up being the weaker experience, in my opinion. It's main redeeming feature is that it features the lesser explored Italian theater of the war and has only a single vehicle section with only moderate bullshit.

The first thing I noticed is the game has the weakest narrative of the three. While the base game had full briefings for each mission and Spearhead had a voiceover before each mission from your character talking about how things were going, this game just plays an incredibly low fidelity clip from a famous speech of the war. It makes your character feel less like a character.

The other thing I noticed is that most enemies don't drop their weapon when they die. It just poofs. Which means now you're playing a game with the ammo management of a survival horror. While that's certainly a legitimate way to design a war game, as ammo management is a thing, it was very jarring compared to the other two entries.

You're also back to mostly doing solo missions, rather than having the illusion of being part of a squad. You start in Tunisia with some desert warfare followed by an infiltration, then you are in action on Sicily and Italy. It was a good idea to set the game in not the super famous area of the war, but at the same time the environments don't actually feel much different from the France sections of the base game. And maybe that's just due to me not having any familiarity with the battles of the Italian push. Maybe if I did the missions would have more meaning.

I got bored and got my Excel on. Here's some statistics:

Games beaten by platform:

3DS: 2
Dreamcast: 1
Genesis: 1
N64: 1
NES: 20
PC: 68
PS2: 1
PS3: 1
PS4: 1
PSX: 1
SNES: 4
Turbo CD: 1
Turbografx-16: 1

Games beaten by genre (very broad categorization):

Action: 11
FPS: 26
Platformer: 22
Puzzle: 7
RPG: 20
RTS: 7
Simulation: 7
Strategy: 3

The chart for games by genre doesn't look bad, but the games by platform looks terrible because PC is so huge with NES a distant runner up, and even that outshines the rest. Had to switch from bar to pie to make it feel less terrible. I'll keep updating the sheet as I beat games this year and post up the graphs afterwards.
