I might now that I have a Retron 5!

EDIT:

Perhaps I should do a fan translation of Tecmo's Secret of the Stars where all of the text is replaced with William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch. Would that make the game better or worse?

The only 16-bit RPGs with stories I would consider "good" are Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI. Even then, both of those games rely more on atmosphere and characterization than plot, and I don't think that the stories in either really rise much above pulp.

Have you ever played Lufia or Lufia II?

I love "the plot twist" in Lufia.

If you play them out of order, the beginning of Lufia hits you in the nuts.

Just saying.

Everything is better filtered through Naked Lunch.

I need to play those. The "essential" 16-bit console RPGs I really need to play are:

Dragon Quest V
Dragon Quest VI
Earthbound
Lufia
Lufia II: Rise of The Sinistrals
Phantasy Star IV
The Seventh Saga
Shining Force
Shadowrun (GEN)
Shadowrun (SNES)

Interesting. My list is about 10 times longer than that.

Also, you should play Exile ASAP. It's like 5 hours long.

I suspect that what our lists of "essential" 16-bit JRPGs varies tremendously.
