How would you destroy a beloved game series?

Post by J T »

Take some cherished game series and come up with an idea for a sequel that is so bad it would kill the franchise.

For example I might create a game called Halo: Dr. Master Chief where you play a Dr. Mario themed version of Halo wherein Master Chief must match three or more green, red, and blue space marine helmets to wipe out nasty Flood viruses. It looks like destroying the viruses will reveal a nude picture of Cortana in the background, but she is just wearing a bikini. This is, of course, all set to an inappropriately dramatic Hans Zimmer score.

Hmm...what if we turned Sonic the Hedgehog into a werewolf?

JT what are you talking about that Halo puzzle game sounds amazing.

I've seen some REALLY bad ideas that could have killed franchises. Hard for me to think of anything more over the top than something like the gritty Bomberman: Act Zero or that cancelled Mega Man X FPS reboot thing.

I'd take a top down tactical squad game and turn it into an FPS that bears little resemblance to the original games.

Super Mario X-treme Sports Mix

This would be a Mario sports game where Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, etc. competed in a variety of "extreme" sports such as moto-cross, skateboarding, rollerblading, etc. It would contain copious product placement from Axe Body Spray, Old Spice, Doritos, Mountian Dew, etc., and some of these items would be used as power ups. Moreover, all of the female characters would be scantily glad; Mario and Luigi would have soul-patches; and it would contain nu-metal interpetations of classic Mario themes.

I would also add some rape jokes and make it otherwise grossly inappropriate for children.

(Thinking about, I am pretty sure that Super Mario X-Treme Sports Mix would - sadly - sell a lot of copies and that a distinct yet sizable segment of the population would genuinely enjoy the nu-metal rap/rock interpreations of Mario themes.)

I'd hype up the sequel as being the greatest game of all time, then release it as a generic shadow of it's former self.

Honestly, most of my ideas for ruining a series are put to shame by the series-ruining games that already exist.
