Have you played generations or colors? As a general rule I tend to dislike sonic games but those 2 were both pretty fun.
I've played some of Colors and it seemed alright.
Looks like I slept on Generations. I must have thought it was 3D? There are too many Sonic games.
I do have both episodes (ugh) of Sonic 4 via Steam, but have yet to touch it.
Generations is half 3D, plays like an upgraded version of Colors with 2.5D classic Sonic levels as well. I actually like the 3D parts better and I'm someone who generally dislikes 3D Sonic. The 2.5D physics are a little questionable.
(Admittedly, it IS the best SMB game if you like shmups.)
If only.
Hear me out: -memorable soundtrack -unique world design -shmup levels (already mentioned) -real-time power ups -the super ball > fire flower -ninja enemies

Those are pretty popular unpopular opinions.
He's right on Mario Kart. Super Mario 64 was certainly revolutionary for its time and is remarkably polished, but I can see how people can get really annoyed with playing the same level 8 times in a row.
Super Mario Land is great and imo better than 6 Golden Coins, which itself is a good game. Super Mario Bros 3 is the best 2D Mario though. The Wario series kinda suck though.
