33. DuckTales Remastered (PC)

well shit, that was way better than I expected. I played the hell out of DuckTales on NES back in the day. And I've played the NES cart in the past year. And I can say that despite any negative reviews you may have heard, the HD port is great. It looks stunning. It's like playing the cartoon. And tweaks are welcome (hello, "no pushing down to pogo" and awesome map!). WayForward rules, and Jake Kaufman once again delivers a loving soundtrack. The one plight I can back up is the constant cutscenes, but those are easily skipped so get over it. DuckTales Remastered is awesome. Play it.

I actually played the NES game so much that the "no pushing down" thing actually threw me off for a while when playing it.

I asked for DuckTales for Christmas and I haven't got my gift from the in-laws yet, so fingers crossed.

Last night a buddy and I beat Streets of Rage, which is already on my list.

He had never heard of SOR, which was surprised me. What also surprised me was that we beat it without using any continues; the guy was a natural.

After that we beat Starfox, already on my list as well.

Well, I did it. I think I'm now done for the year, considering it's less than a week away, and I've spent most of it traveling and likely won't be back home until Dec. 30. I do have my Neo Geo Pocket Color, but I've mainly just been playing through SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium over and over again to unlock characters. Anyway, onto the game discussion:

Blood II was built with the Lithtec engine from Monolith originally used for Shogo. Between the two games that used it for its initial generation, I also prefer Shogo infinitely more. The initial feeling of speed in Blood II recalls the massive mech movements in Shogo, which heightens the feeling of being some kind of immortal uber-warrior in this game, but that collapses once the player encounters the enemy AI. Enemies are all bullet sponges that can keep a perfect bead a football field's length away, or hit the player with shockwaves through walls, or effectively one-hit kill him by grabbing on and crippling the controls while steadily draining health. I never did find a way to knock off the weird serpents, ticks, and disembodied hands over the course of the game, so I'm assuming that if one gets you, you die. That's it. How did this guy kill a god when a basic infantryman is a serious threat? I got through this, but with a lot of corner manipulation and a lot of reloading. Still, for a game from 1998, Blood II looks good and controls smoothly. And there are a lot of weapons to use, though it's a pity that many simply aren't interesting or are really just a slightly different version of a weapon I have. Why couldn't we see more of the flare gun, voodoo doll, and the pesticide sprayer?

As for Metal Slug, I love this series, and I love this game(though I prefer MS2 and MSX). I have reacquired my MVS, so after hooking it all back up and cleaning/testing my MVS carts, I celebrated by playing through this classic. It's beautiful, sounds great, controls well, and always brings a smile to my face. That said, 14 continues. I'm out of practice.

While that game has simple gameplay, it's not easy. That's amazing!

I think there's a trophy for playing on the hardest difficulty setting, which actually switches the controls back to the old scheme

Starfox rules, the original's still the best. I've seen someone on youtube beat SOR with no deaths at all using a infinite grapple trick. I never could get that down though. I always struggle with that game, but can get through SOR 2 with no deaths up until the elevator stage

And just as I'm typing this I find something even more amazing, check out this dude:

1. Luigi's Mansion (GCN)
2. Pokemon Black Version 2 (DS)
3. Psychonauts (PS2)
4. The Cave (PS3)
5. Sonic Adventure 2 (PS3)
6. CoD of Duty: Fish in a Barrel (PC)
7. Virtua Cop (PC)
8. House of the Dead (PC)
9. Typing of the Dead (PC)
10. Final Fight One (GBA)
11. Earthworm Jim (GBA)
12. Puyo Pop (GBA)
13. F-Zero: Maximum Velocity (GBA)
14. King of Fighters: R-2 (NGPC)
15. New Super Mario Bros U (Wii-U)
16. Dear Esther (PC)
17. Proteus (PC)
18. Trauma (PC)
19. Binding of Isaac (PC)
20. DLC Quest (PC)
21. Rayman Legends (PS3)
22. Cave Story+ (PC)
23. Breath of Death VII (PC)
24. Braid (PC)

That looks to be my total for the year's end. It came up shorter than I was anticipating, given that I'd about 4-5 games near complete, but having bought Rayman Legends in September, I found it dominating what little gaming-time I did have; between its main-quest, its post-game, and most of all, its daily/weekly challenges, I found it rather hard to pick up anything else.

My 2014 list is going to start off a bit inflated, once I dedicate the handful of hours needed to complete Super Meat Boy, Jet Set Radio, Nights, and Hell Yeah! and whatever else I might've left behind in Autumn.

I recently found a ton of the Xbox 360 Shmups through some Gamestops. I figured I'd get them as they'll be great in my collection and offer some great replayability. Akai Katana was really enjoyable, and I knew what I was getting with the Raiden games. I was unaware the Raiden Fighter Aces was all of the Arcade releases, which was exciting!

Noise, I love X-Com, and understand what all the praise was about. I think I'm going to get Enemy Within next.
