Games Beaten 2013

Post by BoringSupreez »

A continuation of this thread.

I finished Halo: Reach's campaign this morning. The high quality that the game starts out with goes strong right through to the very end. Reach is the best Halo I've ever played, no joke. When the biggest flaw a game has is the unstable framerate, you know you've got a good game on your hands.

And that last mission where you're left to fight an unwinnable battle alone on Reach was downright depressing, but a perfect way to send out a game that was rapidly ramping up the feeling of inevitable defeat.

You know I was going to create this thread myself, but I noticed the last two or three we had were created by Luke. I thought it was a tradition or something

I'm about halfway through Thomas was Alone. That'll probably be the first game I add to this thread

My favorite part of Reach was the level in which you piloted the ship out in space.

Skyward Sword, just barely though. I finished off the last boss with only one heart left and no additional heal items in my pouch. Really awesome game though I can't recommend it enough. There was certainly a plot twist around every corner.

The biggest twist in the game was...

...the last boss being Akuma.

I just finished the Dragonborn expansion for Skyrim. Seemed VERY short. I completed the main-quest in one-day, today. And that's after getting sidetracked on quite a few sidequests, random exploring, and internet browsing.

Thomas Was Alone - PC

I was a little disappointed with this game. After all I'd heard about the game's story, I found it rather bland and uninteresting. I've heard it tells an emotional tale, and frankly, the game stirred no emotions in me whatsoever. The ending is terrible and very anti-climactic.

The game has a nice gimmick to it. You play as a bunch of computer AI programs (with the levels apparently taking place within a computer) represented onscreen as basic, geometric blocks and they each have names and personalities presented to us through a narrator, who tells the player what they are thinking in each level as you go through the story. The narration is charming and funny, but the story ultimately never leads to anything interesting.

As for the gameplay, it's a puzzle platformer. You have to make the blocks work together by using their different abilities to help each other through the levels. It's the basic Trine/Lost Vikings formula where you switch back and forth between characters in order to proceed. If you like those games, you'll probably like this game. For me, it's all a little too familiar.

And that's really all there is to the game, the gameplay is good but there's nothing particularly exciting about it. So I was playing this one for the story, and it turned out to be bland and uninteresting. I also was annoyed at the game's lack of gamepad support. Mouse and keyboard is not my preferred interface for tricky platforming.

The game doesn't suck, but I guess I was just expecting more from the story as many reviews made a big deal about that. If you play this one for the gameplay, you'll get a very basic, by the numbers, puzzle platformer. It's not bad, but it doesn't stand out. I just didn't feel like the game brings anything new to the genre. I'd rate this game a 6, and that's mostly for the blocks who are people gimmick. Otherwise, I'd rate it a very average 5 out of 10

Another thing I didn't like were the geeky references in Thomas Was Alone. I usually enjoy that sort of thing in a game, but here it felt forced. I believe the way this game uses references is what people mean when they use the word "pandering"
