Fist Puncher - PC (DRM free from Desura)Wow, what an addicting game! Every time I sat down to play this I would end up sitting in front of my PC monitor for a few hours! This game is an old school beat 'em up comparable to Scott Pilgrim and River City Ranson...except it's way better than that Scott Pilgrim game. It has a very retro look like an old NES game and it pays homage to a lot of old beat 'em up classics like Bad Dudes, Renegade, Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, and even some Konami games. Every few stages you see something that makes you say, "Oh, that's just like" followed by some old beat 'em up classic.
It's a fun game. The combat system is fun and has just enough moves to stay interesting for the whole game. You've got dashes, blocks, grabs, specials, a super mode, etc. Some of the abilities and attacks are not things I've seen in a beat 'em up before. There's some creative stuff here like using one of the female characters to kiss enemies in order to convert them to your side. It's very funny to approach the level boss with a posse of dudes ready to fight for your character, who is apparently the biggest slut in the city
. There are some other very funny moves and abilities in the game that I won't spoil, because it's more fun to discover them yourself. It makes playing as the different characters worthwhile. They all bring something funny or interesting to the table.
The level system is cool, but nothing you haven't seen before. As you level up you get points to add to your stats and you also get points to spend on upgrades. One thing I like about Fist Puncher is that it isn't one of those bullshit games that doesn't let you max out a character. By the time you reach max level you WILL have all abilities and max stats. Yeah, that's right, you CAN have your cake and eat it too. Fuck those other games that don't let you.
It's a pretty long game with lots of stages and there are little secrets to find. The game also have an achievement system built right into the game. So if you play the DRM-free version like I did, not having Steam achievements doesn't seem like such a big deal. I may end up activating my Steam key for this at some point though just because the Steam version has an exclusive character, but it's still nice to have a DRM free version of the game.
Humor is a big part of the game. It's nothing on the level of quality jokes from a game like Lollipop Chainsaw, but it's entertaining enough. Much of the humor is visual, when you see crazy stuff you weren't expecting like fighting naked dudes on a nude beach or seeing a bunch of guys with shocked looks on their faces after a certain playable character has frozen them in ice Mr. Freeze style.
My only gripe with the game is when it tries to shake things up and break away from the standard move to the right and beat the snot out of everyone formula. Some of these stages are downright aggravating. One is an annoying escort mission. Another requires you to beat more enemies than another NPC character, except that NPC character is faster than you and does one hit kills on every attack. A lot of these stages where the game tries to shake up the formula just end up feeling very cheap, like they are just there to show you what a dick the developer is capable of being rather than add some variety to the game.
Overall though, I really love this game and enjoyed beating it (and I did it with the stat screen showing my player deaths as zero too
). As a huge beat 'em up fan, I'm definitely the target audience for this game. It's fun, funny, addicting and plays off nostalgia in a good way. It has an interesting history too. I believe it was a kickstarter project, then became an Adult Swim game before being available as a separate product that you can purchase and download. It's a good year for beat 'em ups with this and Dungeons & Dragons Chronicles of Mystara already out, and fun stuff on the horizon like Charlie Murder, Dragon's Crown and apparently
another version of Dungeons & Dragon's Chronicles of Mystara coming out in August
