PS3 Disc drive rattling Noise same as Wii rattling noise

Post by JC48573 »

I am playing Assassin's Creed 3 and it's doing this rattling noise in the disc drive. It's been over a year since I had this console, a 250gb slim model. It's not affecting the gameplay, so there are no slowdowns or freezing issue. Does anybody know what is the cause of the rattling sound? Dust caught up in the rotary perhaps? It's like a rattling noise. Imagine the sound when you stick a paper in a spinning fan.

There are other games I have that makes the same noise like Lollipop Chainsaw.

Thanks to Ziggy, I think we've found the problem to the mysterious rattling noise of the disc drive. I'm sure of it.

A better video of the sound.

Sounds like the disc might not be sitting flat in the disc tray. Kind of like when it spins, there's lots of give and the disc wobbles. Seems like the problem MAY be vibrations caused by the wobbly disc spinning. Maybe your disc tray needs to be realigned?

Though, what I would really do is call Sony, tell them about the problem, see what they say, then determine whether or not you want to open your PS3 yourself.

This might be of some help to you...

I had a very similar problem with my Wii. It very well could be the same kind of problem you're having with your PS3 Slim. They're both front loading drives, after all. I'm sure they're pretty similar in design.

I will be attempting to fix this. The problem is, I feel like I'm the only person currently having this problem and there aren't that many reliable tutorials out there. Do you know any sites? So I just told off my family not to use the console until it's fixed. I also have a launch wii console, so far it hasn't had that problem yet.

I haven't heard of this problem with the PS3 before, but like I said, it sounds like the problem I had with the Wii. Read through the thread I linked, I posted all of my findings in there. It will give you a good idea of what to look for when you open your PS3 up.

The best tips I can give you... To really find out what's going on, you have to a disc spinning while the console is opened up. Be very careful what you do when you do this, you could easily damage something. Also, use a junk disc of some sort. A blank CD-R or a really beat up beyond fixing disc of some sort will do.

I will, but this is going to take time. I need some tools and a hair dryer for the warranty sticker :)
