Always found ranking games by year to be a difficult task, due to localization, ports, and so forth.

For instance, Mario 2 did indeed come out in 1988, but Doki Doki Panic was 1987.

Oh definitely. Well it's good in that you can judge JP games that took a while to get released in the west, such as SMB3 or Dragon Quest 1, against what was made the same year rather than what it was up against when it was localized. Not that people in general played most games on launch back then anyway but yeah.
You can rank games based on how they held up or imagine hypothetically being in x year and having access to all games released that year, or some other scenario; I didn't want to add a bunch of rules.

In the case of SMB2 I did also include Doki Doki Panic for 1987 separately, but maybe they are a bit too close when I think about it. My reasoning was that people can use the first version of a game as a catch-all vote for all ports unless there are signifcant differences and people didn't seem to mind this.

my dad found some of my old stuff in his attic, and going through it there was a Christmas list. I'm guessing this was from around 1994 or so. The entire list is just video games, broken up into two sections:

SUPER NINTENDO

-Samurai Shodown
-Donkey Kong Country
-Earthworm Jim
-Clayfighter 2
-NBA Jam
-Super Gameboy
-Jurassic Park
- Rap Jams

GAME GEAR

-NHL All Star Hockey
-NBA Jam
-Sonic Chaos
-Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
-Beavis & Butt-head
-Mortal Kombat II

Continuing with my "OMG I am turning 40" lists, here's my 40 favorite video games of each year from the last 40 years. As with all these year-based lists, these aren't necessarily my "Top 40 Video Games of All Time", nor were they necessarily my favorite game of that year at the time (though many were)...

1980 Pac-Man (Arcade)
1981 Galaga (Arcade)
1982 Parsec (TI-99/4A)

1984 Impossible Mission (Commodore 64)
1985 Super Mario Bros. (NES)
1986 Out Run (Arcade)
1987 The Legend of Zelda (NES)

1995 Chrono Trigger (SNES)
1996 Quake (PC)
1997 Final Fantasy VII (PlayStation)
1998 Battle Garegga (Saturn)

2008 Far Cry 2 (PlayStation 3)
2009 Uncharted 2 (PlayStation 3)
2010 Dragon Age Origins (PlayStation 3)

I gave songs and movies a similar treatment, if you are interested...

It was probably the game that I loved the most in my early childhood, so your opinion is invalid  I used to play it all the time with my grandmother

My second choice would be River Raid or Chopper Command, both of which are admittedly better games that I played later in life, but Parsec was my gateway to a life-long love of shmups...
