I'm with you here. I don't really see the need for a "next console generation" at this point. Especially since the PS4 Pro and X1X exist.
And that's the thing that gets me - how are they going to make a console that's better than the Pro/1X at an affordable price in the next year or two? Maybe they can, but both of those are near the $500 mark, a price point that hasn't historically worked very well at a console launch.
Along the same lines, I have never really understood the push to 4K, or at least how fast it's being pushed. I mean, 4K is wonderful and it looks great and all. But the hardware just isn't there yet outside of enthusiast (and pretty expensive) PC parts. At least not from a point of view of truly mainstream adoption. Even the Pro/1X are using some fancy rendering techniques to display a 4K image (often 1600p and not actually 4K). I don't say that to criticize them in any way - they are doing very impressive things for their price point and the games I have seen look great. But that's kind of the point, isn't it? The hardware just isn't there yet.
The state of 4K content isn't much better. Cable TV isn't broadcast in 4K, with the exception of some sports. Streaming services like Netflix and Hulu have a little 4K content, but not all that much. Meanwhile the internet infrastructure to support 4K streaming doesn't exist in a lot of the USA (again, if you're looking at things from a point of view of mainstream adoption).
I would LIKE 4K to be the standard for visual media, but it just ain't there yet.
