24. Sonic Generations (PS3)

I honestly loved it, even if the final boss was pointlessly easy. I'm so enamoured by it, that I can even forgive the sometimes confusing level-design on the 3D stages, the laziness of sign-posting random freefalls, instead of building levels that let you deal with them with a fair shot. Even with that, it's a game that gets so very much more right than it doesn't, and it's stuffed with fondness and reverence for the little blue dodger, that you'd let it away with anything. And, I've only ever been a casual follower of the mainline Sonic titles, so I can only imagine what it must've felt like to those who'd wholly endured the home-console wilderness years between the Adventure games and the rise of Colours and Generations.

Basically, a mighty-good reboot (more or less) of the franchise, that serves as a grand template going forward. Can't wait.

Very. Good. Point.

Why have I neglected all the SHMUPS I've beaten this year by way of TR Shmup of the month *and* STGT? I've got some!

Good job on beating Kingdom Grand Prix, BTW. Looks like Blade Buster was another caravan I missed out on! I like those.

So with the shmups I finished added:

Shenmue II -- Dreamcast (January 9)
Golden Axe Warrior -- Sega Master System (January 19)
Ys I -- Turbo CD (March 22)
*NEW* Zanac X Zanac -- PS1 (April 7)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 -- Dreamcast (April 30)
Warioware Twisted - Game Boy Advance (May 30)
Wolfenstein 3D - Game Boy Advance (May 31)
Warioware Inc. - Game Boy Advance (June 15)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past - Game Boy Advance (June 25)
Super Mario Advance 2: SMW - Game Boy Advance (June 26)
Command & Conquer - PC (June 28)
Gunstar Heroes - Genesis (July 6)
Call of Duty Finest Hour - GameCube (August 13)
Bomberman '94 - PC Engine (August 17)
*NEW* Salamander 2 - MAME/Arcade (August 19)
Megaman 7 - SNES (by way of Mega Man Anniversary Collection) (August 17)
Medal of Honor Frontline - GameCube (August 24)
*NEW* Super Star Shooter - Sharp X68000 (August 30)
*NEW* Mega Man 8 - PS1 (by way of Mega Man Anniversary Collection (August 31)
*NEW* Mega Man Anniversary Collection - GameCube (August 31)

There! Looks much more like a complete list!

12. Super Gem Fighters: Mini Mix (PS2)

20. Darius Gaiden (PS2)
21. Super Mario Bros. (NES)
22. Tiny Toon Adventures (NES)
23. Tiny Toon Adventures 2: Trouble in Wackyland (NES)
24. Sonic Generations (PS3)

25. 1942 (NES)

I imagine the only way to die in this conversion, is if you lose focus dealing with the sheer monotony of it. Which I did lots, understandably enough. Tired, prolonged port that trolls somewhat, with a congrats screen for an ending, and it resets your score once you hit 999,999. Ouchies. I can say, in all honesty, that I only beat this one out of a sense of contempt for how dull it is.

26. Batman: The Return of the Joker (NES)

For all I'd seen of it, and heard, I wasn't expecting much. Funnily, I found it to be surprisingly good, once you get over the idea of Batman with a gun. It's got a respectable difficulty curve, some decent level design and a couple of bosses that reward you for thinking on your feet/acceptable-spamming, whilst remaining a suitable challenge.

It's got a couple of niggles here and there, such as unfair enemy placement, the odd stiff jump, and offering you power-ups that somewhat hinder you when facing certain foes, but they're complaints that didn't greatly impact my enjoyment. Quite short too, since I dusted off the whole thing in a few hours, including boss hiccups, silly mistakes and sillier deaths. I've read some nasty things regarding stage 3, and its supposed unfairness and impossibility, but I didn't find it that bad. I mean, sure, it was the most laborious stage to work through, but I've encountered worse in my time.

Really though, what more can you ask for than a competent game that doesn't sully itself with trying to be more than it is? I really had a lot of fun with it. Sunsoft pulled a bit of a cracker here.

keio flying squadron - sega cd
lords of thunder -sega cd
robo aleste - sega cd
android assault - sega cd

thunderforce III - genesis
steel empire - genesis
lightening force - genesis

bloodlines - genesis
bloodlines - genesis
bloodlines - gensis
mortal kombat - gensis

i was gunning for a no death run on expert mode in bloodlines. but it didn't happen. which is why i beat it 3 times. it could have been probably 20 times, but i usually just turned off the console whenever i died. and i am pretty much sick of bloodlines and the thought of playing it makes me want to hurl. it will probably be another year before i can play it again.

i recently saw a youtube video about the making of mortal kombat and mortal kombat 2. and then i saw another series of videos comparing all mortal kombat platforms. and that got me in the mood. unfortunately, my sega cd version doesn't work - game is in perfect condition, too. so i had to resort to cart form. and i was too lazy to look up the blood code. beat it with raiden.
if you took a shit, please put it back

3/7 Street Fighter X Tekken (PS3)
4/14 Sonic CD (PSN)
5/3 Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi 3 (Wii)
6/3 Metroid Prime (Wii)

7/25 Super Mario 3D Land
8/23 Megaman III (Gameboy)
8/24 Megaman IV (Gameboy)
9/3 Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins (Gameboy)

I beat this game as part of this month's Together Retro. Okay, here's the deal: This is my favorite Mario game of all time. I don't know why but I enjoy it more than Super Mario Bros. 3 or World and given the option to play Mario Wii or Galaxy, I'll still do a run through of this game first. There is something about how quirky it is. Also, I am still amazed at the level of polish this game has.

Special thanks to Hobie for refurbishing this game for me! Battery worked great, dude!
The PSTV is amazing.

9/4 Kirby's Dreamland (Gameboy)

Not a whole lot to say about this one. Doesn't have a lot of the features that ended up defining the Kirby series but it's still just as fun. The graphics are kind of amazing for a Gameboy game.
The PSTV is amazing.

41. Battlefield 3 (360)
42. Asura's Wrath (360)

I went 3 for 3 and knocked out 3 of my "to-play" games in the last 3 days.

AC: Rev was great, I just needed to wait long enough since finishing Brotherhood to enjoy it. It's a lot like B.hood with not much new to offer, but it shed more light on Desmond's current situation and closed out Altair and Ezio's stories well.

I've logged probably close to 100 hours on BF3's multiplayer, but I had never gotten around to finishing the campaign. After playing Assassin's Creed I felt like playing an FPS, and BF3 was one of the few I own that I hadn't finished yet. I was able to finally finish it, and it was total crap.

Asura's Wrath was one big, long cut scene with a few quick-time events and crappy battles thrown in the mix. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think the QTE's were my favorite part. I enjoyed the story and art style, too.
