The Darkness II has a really cool graphical style and some excellent voice acting. The story is fairly original; I mean, not that there is anything unique about mobsters or demons in videogames, but the way they are combined in this game is unique and I really like the way that the game alternates between scenes with the mob and the Darkness with scenes in a mental institution reminiscent of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Even after finishing the game, I'm not sure if Jackie Estecado was really possessed or just hallucinating.

That being said, I have mixed feelings about the game. It's overly violent. I'm not one that is usually shocked by violence, but this game revels in it to a point of absurdity that detracts from the game and storyline. This games violence defines the word "gratuitous". There are close ups of throat slittings, decapitations, dismemberment, and the particularly disgusting "assecution" maneuver (If you have a sturdy stomach, see for yourself). I don't mind a bit of the ultraviolence now and again, but in The Darkness II it slows down the gameplay and it's so revolting that it detracts from your character. I actually don't like him because of the gameplay, even though he seems likeable enough in his character interactions. The man is (literally) a monster and it's not all that pleasant to roleplay.

The gameplay itself is pretty standard FPS fare, but things are fast paced and control well. The Darkness' serpentine arms add a unique bit of flavor to the melee combat, and the special powers you get are sort of cool, but over time make you so overpowered that the final scenes of the game are a breeze.

So final verdict: love the art style, setting, and voice acting. Story and gameplay were serviceable, but not revolutionary. The violence was too much. And not just because it was gross, but because it detracted from the rest of the game with all of the prolonged gore-porn shots.

I was a little underwhelmed by The Darkness II, but for different reasons. I just thought it wasn't as engaging as the first game, and didn't really make an effort to flesh out some of the first game's ideas. Instead, if kind of dumbed down the whole experience to make it more in line with standard shooter fare.

The over the top violence didn't bother me at all though. It's about the only thing that makes the shooter gameplay a bit more fun than standard shooters. I think it's worth mentioning that the violence is not so much a manifestation of Jackie's will, but of the "The Darkness." Jackie is not fully in control of it. So if that made you like him a bit less, just remember that he has to fight this creature's control. Also, the people he's fighting do some pretty vicious things to him as the story goes on, so I don't think the brutality of how they get killed is unwarranted. They clearly deserve everything that they get

Oh, and he definitely wasn't hallucinating. I like that they tease that though, but I've seen this sort of thing done better in other places, like a great season 6 Buffy episode that seriously called into question if the entire series wasn't just a delusion of some crazy girl. .

I know you were addressing JT, but I just thought I'd point out that the game has a sort of extra campaign after you beat the game where you get to play as other characters. It's not as involved as the main campaign, but it does tie in to it and fill in some blanks in the story. I believe it can be played both solo or co-op

Thanks to the Summer Games Challenge I decided to finally tackle this one.

It's super crazy and a little dated, but very charming and good for a laugh. I was able to finish it pretty quick, and with little trouble (besides that damn snowboarding level) but it felt really good to finally beat this one. It's been on my shelf for years.

If anyone is curious about it, I streamed the whole game and it's all archived on my Twitch.tv channel: http://www.twitch.tv/nihonrobot

Games beaten so far:
1. Mario vs Donkey Kong: Minis March Again - DSiWare (Gold Star save file)
2. Sonic Generations - PS3
3. Super Mario 3D Land - 3DS (with a five glittering star save file)
4. Starship Defense (All no SOS perfects) - DSiWare
5. Soul of Darkness - DSiWare
6. Mutant Mudds (All crystals and water sprouts) - 3DS Eshop
7. The Simpsons Arcade (US Version) - PS3
8. DodoGo! - DSiWare - (Golden egg on every stage)
9. Mass Effect 2 - 360 (Insanity mode difficulty with Sentinel class)
10. Mass Effect 3 - 360 (Insanity mode with Adept)
11. Final Fantasy XIII-2 - PS3
12. Xenoblade Chronicles - Wii
13. The Darkness II - Xbox 360
14. Lollipop Chainsaw - PS3 (Platinum trophy)

8) 8) 8) All trophies acquired for Final Fantasy XIII-2 8) 8) 8)

I'm going to make an effort to at least attempt to get all trophies and achievements in the games I play going forward, or get whatever passes for total completion in any non PS3/Xbox 360 games. It just feels really sweet getting that 100%, and I think it's an interesting challenge. Instead of just focusing on how many games I can beat in a year, I can also try and see how many games I can complete 100% by the end of the year. Most games these days don't really make simply beating them much of a challenge anyway.

More than likely I won't stick to this goal though. It's such a pain completing every challenge in some games. I have to say though, I really enjoyed getting all the trophies in Lollipop Chainsaw and Final Fantasy XIII-2. Some games really do this trophy/achievement thing right, and it really motivates you to go the distance when they do. I feel like I really experienced just about everything these two games had to offer in going for that 100%. Although I haven't really touched the Coliseum DLC for Final Fantasy XIII-2, which I've heard is where the game's real badass boss fights are. I'm not sure if I want to jump into that, or go and play my recently acquired copy of SSX for the PS3.

I typically try and do this, because I completely agree. Some games do it right, but some games do it wrong, too. I typically skip achievements that are insanely long grinds/multiplayer achievements. What's really frustrating is playing the games with multiplayer achievements that no longer have servers running or a multiplayer community.

Part of why I bought it was that I heard it could be completed in about 6-7 hours. I like short games. I completed all of the main campaign and the Vendetta online 4-player co-op missions. My total play time is at 9 hours. I like to take pictures, so I usually take a bit longer than most to finish a game. I don't know if that seems too short to you or not, but I felt like I spent just enough time with the game and got what I came for. I'm debating uninstalling now because there are still more achievements and collections and stuff that I didn't do, but I will most likely skip all that.

I'm really glad I played through the multiplayer though. It was a lot like playing Left 4 Dead, but in a different setting (and not as good at fostering teamwork). It was also cool how the multiplayer has a completely separate storyline that runs parallel to the main one. It was helpful to play them in sequence (single palyer campaign followed by co-op campaign) so that I could see where the multiplayer missions fit into the overall plot. It gives you a behind-the-scenes view of what the rest of the mob was doing while Jackie was away.

Thanks! That was my first 1CC. Even though I love shooters, I'm not that great at them hehe. I think my copy of Akia Katana is coming today, so I'll probably be playing through that one tonight, too.

My interest in games is kind of all over the place, so I tend to play a little bit of everything. I think the fact that you noticed my taste in games says a lot about yours, too. :)
