1. Half Life 2: Episode One +
2. Half Life 2: Episode Two ++
3. Portal ++
4. F.E.A.R. ++

I had a fun time with F.E.A.R. It looks rather dated, and the environments get monotonous after a while, but the combat is great fun. Few games manage to make the guns feel as powerful as this one did. I can see why it amazed so many people back in 2005.

Edit: Geozeldadude's post has inspired me to implement a rating system: ++ (great), + (good), - (mediocre), -- (bad).

rating scale: two thumbs up = highly recommended, one thumb up = good not great, thumbs down = avoid

- NEW virtua fighter remix (sat) -- thumbs down
- NEW plants vs. zombies (DSiware) -- thumbs down
- NEW nintendogs + cats (3DS) -- one thumb up
- NEW just dance 2 (wii) -- one thumb up

first post of the new year. i really tried to play enough of virtua fighter to appreciate it, but i just found it to be terribly slow, tedious, and dated. maybe it was its conscious attempt to be more realistic that was such a turn-off, but i'll take street fighter over this any day.

plants vs. zombies is mildly amusing, but it's so incredibly mindless that i put it aside after i got to stage 4. my first foray into tower defense games, and it's going to be a long while before i try another one.

nintendogs + cats was what i expected, namely a very safe sequel, but it had just enough new features to keep me playing to the "end".

just dance 2 was surprisingly good fun, even solo. the movement recognition works quite well, and it has a nice amount of variety.

Let's see. This game looked incredible. But it was way easier than SoulBlade. I actually breezed through Arcade Mode in about 5-6 mins playtime. Pretty easy. I used Cassandra. How do I unlock Sophitia?

EDIT: also, so far between SB, SC2 and SC4 -- I enjoy 4 the most.

You have to play through weapon master mode to unlock the hidden characters iirc.

how many times did you fail a mission? i don't mind games that are somewhat easy if the rest of it is brilliant, but this game was completely mindless.

Total: 19

Picross DS was Picross, there's not much more you can say about it. I beat all the easy and normal mode puzzles in under an hour each (which gets you animated colour versions of the puzzle image, rather than static black and white) to count it as beaten. I still have to beat free mode (where it doesn't tell you if you made a mistake, and sounds horribly hard) but frankly, Ive had my fill of picross now. I had to beat 165 puzzles up to now as is! Anyhow, its a perfectly fine game, perhaps a little clinical in its execution. Worth a buy for cheap.

Half Minute Hero is an absolutely fantastic little game, which I really, really enjoyed. It's split into four modes, the main one being Hero 30, which is like an ultra fast action RPG. You have 30 seconds to complete each level, although you can reverse time by paying the time goddess. Each time you do so it costs more though, so it's not infinite. You start each level at level 1 aswell, so you have to 'grind' (which takes about 10 seconds at most) aswell as often figuring out other tasks such as rescuing people, beating minibosses and opening blocked routes, before taking out the boss. This mode is definitely more developed than the others. After that you also have Evil Lord 30, which is a 30 second real time strategy game where you can summon monsters to fight opponents using a simple rock-paper-scissors system, Princess 30, which is a fast paced 30 second shmup, and Knight 30, which is probably the weakest of the bunch and is basically an escort mission where you protect a sage for 30 seconds so he can cast a spell to kill all enemies. The problem I had with this is that enemies never died, so you spent most of the level just running to the safest corner of the map and waiting. Theres also Hero 300, the final level (where you have 5 minutes to beat the large map and no way to reverse time, and a final bonus: Hero 3, which works like hero 30, but with 3 seconds to beat the level :shock: . Needless to say, I beat all the modes, and loved the whole game. The retro stylings and epic guitar music worked really well together, and the game was perfect short bursts of fun.

Soul Calibur was played for this months Together Retro, and whilst its a decent game, I felt it could've been improved by not being on the dreamcast. I realise it's probably a controversial opinion, but the Dreamcast controller is cumbersome, with spongy buttons and an uncomfy control stick. The loading times seem pretty mean too, although it could be my disc, which has a tendency to crash on the loading screens aswell. On the other hand, considering it was the only console at the time that could do the game justice, its kind of a silly thing to hold against it. The game seems very fluid (although not as much as its sequel) and it has a nice character selection. Some of the characters seem a little more unbalanced in this one, although perhaps thats just me. Xianghua anbd Sophitia seem faster than in the later games, whereas Ivy seems to be slow and has much shorter range than later entries. Overall, a good game, but I don't feel it matches up to its sequel really.

well I haven't beaten the game yet, but I've only failed a mission once and I'm somewhere in the third stage if I recall. I agree it's not overly hard, but I can't say I'd call it mindless. I think it's a fun introduction to a genre I was unfamiliar with.

The first few levels are incredibly easy. You get new plants and new zombies with every passing couple of stages. It takes more strategy in the later levels when you're trying to juggle skills to adapt to the unique zombie waves coming your way.

actually that just confused me geozeldadude... you added PvZ to your list of games beaten, but you mentioned that you stopped playing after stage 4... did you beat the game or not?

well, to be completely literal i haven't "beaten" the game, but as i spent a more than fair amount of time on it and have no intention of ever revisiting it, "finished" is equivalent to "beaten" to me in this case. we're free to interpret "beaten" as we wish in this thread.
