This is why every time I see an artistically realized colorful style in a modern game my heart leaps a little with joy.

Well...since there's no year 0, how about 2001 to 2010?

I'd probably say online gaming myself, not that I have ever, or ever will, partake in it.

Looking at the decades:
70's = creation of the home console market/arcades

80's = popularization of video gaming(Pac-Man, Mario/NES, Tetris/Game Boy, etc.)

90's = technological renaissance (started off with decent 2d(16-bit), ended with decent 3D(Dreamcast)

00's = ???

Popularization of online play and web-based support for console, PC, and Handheld games.

THIS.

I always found it silly how the media presented the new millennium as having started in 2000. It didn't. That was the last year of that millennium. January 1st, 2001, was when the new millennium started. The media are idiots.

At any rate, the OP is right on with the topic. It is the end of the first decade of the 2000s.

I think the main thing is the absolute domination of Sony, Nintendo losing more of the market until the Wii temporarily brought it back to prominence, the emergence of Microsoft as a top player, Sony losing it's absolute dominance and the popularity of first-person shooters and online gaming.

I'll go with the Gamecube on this one
but also... the birth of "social-gaming" (Farmville and it's ilk)

I can't agree with "social-gaming" being gaming... I guess technically it is, but for me... it's so mainstream that it is OUTSIDE of the gaming hobby.

I think the Gamecube is a bit like the Saturn or Dreamcast; a really cool system with a lot of great niche games that just didn't catch on. It will be remember as an "also ran."

I cant believe no ones has mentioned the fact that sega dropped out of the console market. Probably one of the most major points of the gaming decade if not gaming history.

The decade of Broadband internet.

Broadband started getting more widely used, and now everything revolves around online play, DLC, in-browser gaming, cloud computing, and people everywhere getting interconnected every second of every day. This 24/7 connection has altered multiplayer gaming, some DRM (Thanks ubisoft) gaming on cell phones, everything.

I have to go with Cor on the loss of Sega being one of the biggest events of the decade. It certainly shattered my gamer's heart into a million little pieces.

Also, on an irritating note, this decade saw the birth of a new type of fanboy, the so called "jock gamer". Bro types who only play madden, call of duty, and halo. Anything beyond that is for kids, and you're not a "real gamer" if you disagree.

Those guys bug the shit out of me, even more than the traditional sour grapes fanboys who hate the systems they don't have.

Second, and I know this wont win me a lot of friends on here, but gamecube is incredibly mediocre. Just like N64. Good games on it? Of course, enough for me to be enthused? No.

In a strictly mainstreamed mindset, 2000-2009 will probably be remembered as the decade of Playstation 2, the decline and rise of Nintendo (from the failing cube to the successful Wii) and the introduction of Microsoft, as you already pointed out.

The Gamecube, had a quality over quantity theme to it. Yeah maybe it didn't have the sheer #s of games that the Xbox or PS2 had, but the games were great. The Gamecube offered the kinds of games that the PS2 and Xbox simply didn't or couldn't offer. And I love it for that reason alone.
