2000-2010 What will it be remembered for?
If you look over any decade in gamign certain things stand out at you. But for the last 10 years what really changed. Yes graphics improved and HD was started but that does little really for gameplay. Online play has clearly been a huge part of the change with Halo 2 first making it easy to use on consoles.(PC is another matter entirely)
Personally i think the gamecube will stand out in time. Its a bit like the dreamcast in that, it's actually a great little machine with many steller titles. But wasnt too popular and had many many crappy games to bury the good ones in.
Also Microsoft entered the console race. What affect that ahs had i dont know, but would like to hear your opinions.

First off, I think you meant 2000-2009. Decades are only 10 years, not 11, so you are a year late with this topic.
Second, and I know this wont win me a lot of friends on here, but gamecube is incredibly mediocre. Just like N64. Good games on it? Of course, enough for me to be enthused? No.
In a strictly mainstreamed mindset, 2000-2009 will probably be remembered as the decade of Playstation 2, the decline and rise of Nintendo (from the failing cube to the successful Wii) and the introduction of Microsoft, as you already pointed out.

Grand Theft Auto III
Guitar Hero
Achievements
DLC games
Much more of an online influence on games in general
Motion Gaming(and Nintendo once again laying the smackdown on everyone else in the gaming industry and proving who is really king)
Sony's rise and fall
The lie that was next generation gaming
Japanese gaming losing its impact
Shooters, shooters, shooters..and more goddamn shooters!!!!
What is everything so damn brown and gray!!!
Retro gaming hitting it big on Xbox Live Arcade
Racketboy gaining more recognition

I'm gonna have to agree with lisalover. Games like Pikmin, Viewtiful Joe, Pikmin 2, Resident Evil 4, Eternal Darkness, Paper Mario, Ikaruga(not a GC exclusive, but a game many hadn't played before the GC version), Metroid Prime, an enhanced port of Skies of Arcadia and Beyond Good and Evil(which was supposedly developed primarily for the GC)and Twilight Princess are all better than GOOD I would say. That's a pretty good list of games and I left out original titles like Luigi's Mansion, fun games like Wario World(one of Treasure's more underappreciated games)and probably lots more quality stuff(like Chibi Robo)

The last decade will be remembered for one thing above all else:
The Playstation 2.
It's impact will never fade. I mean how many games were (are still being made) for the thing? It's like the NES or even VCS of the modern era.

The rise of online play and massively open worlds in gaming.
Also for brown. Lots of it. Everywhere.

Well...since there's no year 0, how about 2001 to 2010?
I'd probably say online gaming myself, not that I have ever, or ever will, partake in it.
Looking at the decades:
70's = creation of the home console market/arcades
80's = popularization of video gaming(Pac-Man, Mario/NES, Tetris/Game Boy, etc.)
90's = technological renaissance (started off with decent 2d(16-bit), ended with decent 3D(Dreamcast)
00's = ???
