Anyone ever heard of a console called Halcyon?
Recently, I went to a not-so-local movie store called MovieStop (Possible relation to GameStop). There, I discovered a DVD Game from Digital Leisure called Thayer's Quest.
Knowing Digital Leisure, I realized that this must be a Laserdisc Game. Surprisingly, I was wrong. Upon research, I discovered that it was originally released for a console called Halcyon.
Finding only one picture of it, I became curious, which brings me to my point...Just what the hell is this thing? Does anyone know anything about it? Better yet, has anyone ever owned one?

01. RDI Halcyon
For the console collector, there are no systems that will match the rarity of the RDI Halcyon. If you are fortunate enough to locate one, it will be the centerpiece of any collection. Little is known about the true production of the system and it is a non-confirmed rumor that the system was even available at retail. Current information tells us that no more than 10 units were built for the investors of the company, all of them by hand. It doesn't get any better than this folks - welcome to the true holy grail of video game hardware!!

Interesting, looks like a Laser Disc game machine.
Why the screaming with the large font?

Damn! That was a fast reply! Thanks noise!
Unfortunately, locating one sounds difficult, and even if I could, it would be WAY out of my Price Range. Ah, well. Good thing I bought the DVD. Heh.

Not screaming. The pictures were kind of big, and I wanted people to be able to see the text.

yeah locating it would be very hard. That link I posted is an article about "holy grail" consoles... the Halcyon is #1 on the list!

I think a blind man could see the text you typed.

On topic though... this system looks interesting. Might have to do a little research.

Did you buy this thing or not? If it was cheap you could probably turn a nice profit from a collector.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

Re: Anyone ever heard of a console called Halcyon?
You are not wrong, it's a laserdisc console so it was on laserdisc. Also it was released on the arcades(again on laserdisc, of course) with a keypad and some kind of save feature, very ahead of it's time on that.
However the versions are not the same AFAIK. Since the Halcyon version used a two-sided laserdisc and the arcade used a single side scenes had to be cut. I don't know if the DVD version includes everything. However note that it only has half of the storyline since the planned sequel never materialized. I read somewhere that another (later) game was kind of a sequel and includes the rest of the storyline, you should he able to find the title easily if you are interested.
The Halcyon simply was too expensive. Just the laserdisc player was horribly expensive but it also had a speech module, voice recognition and artificil intelligence! It was simply too experimental, while the technology existed it was not developed enough for what they wanted to do.

I do own a couple Laser Disc games for the Palcom laser system, I think the machine was the cheaper Japanese release. It had a PCB built in to impose a game sprite. My real jewel is an Original Dragons Lair Arcade Game Laser Disc. I can only watch all the levels on my regular laser player. I think the Halcyon system would have been the ultimate with the entire PCB emulating the Arcade versions. Although there would have been a limited Laser game library and that high price tag.
