Whats your opinion on the new Tomb Raider and Lara Croft?

by MrEco Tue Dec 14, 2010 1:56 am

I personally was never interested in any of the Tomb Raider games. The gameplay always struck me as simplistic and repetitive. And the controls and camera of each game looked terrible. As for the character Lara Croft, I was never interested. Ask anyone and they'll tell you the same thing: Lara was only ever payed attention to for her sexual appeal (And I never found her remotely physically attractive anyway). The girl had all the personality of a wire fence.

However, this new Tomb Raider reboot (After reading the GameInformer article) has me really excited. Just the gameplay concept alone of trying to survive on a deserted island sounds amazing. But to boot the new redesign for Lara's character looks great. Not only are they actually giving her a personality but it sounds like shes gonna be an actual action hero worth caring about. I don't like protagonists like Kratos or Master Chief. They are invincible. Nothing can hurt them physically or emotionally. They fight through hardships but never learn anything and never have more trouble than it takes you or me to finish breakfast. They are boring. Meanwhile great characters like The Prince (Sands of Time) or Big Boss (MGS3) are able to actually learn to be better people from the events that surround them. They start at the top and are thrust to the bottom and forced to grow to survive. The new Lara looks to be following the latter group. I personally think that more realistic protagonists is exactly what we need. Characters who are relate-able not because they never talk or because we never see there face. But characters who are relate-able because we are shown how human they can be, and because the events that we guide them through are able to shape them just as much as they would any real person.

What are your thoughts?

Honestly, its hard to take this reboot seriously since its the latest in a long line of them.

I've tried time and time again to give this series a chance, and I always end up not liking the games much at all.

Too much back tracking and trying to figure out what the hell im supposed to do.

I have to agree with the dislike of Kratos. I love the gameplay of God of War but i cant stand the Kratos character.

He just comes off as a teenagers rage filled power trip fantasy. In the first game i could muster up some sympathy for him, but after that hes just a dick.

I keep expecting someone to come up to him and say

"Do you ever meet people you don't kill?"

If he can't stick his blade or his penis into it, then he doesn't know how to solve the problem.

I haven't cared about a Tomb Raider game since the original, but Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is awesome. I still don't care much for the IP in general though.

The character design looks promising, but I trust Fox news more than I do game informer. The magazine gets worse with every issue. My favorite thing about this issue is there's a column on "Things you don't know about -insert game developer name here-".

My first thought was, I don't know anything about this guy. This new issue says way more about developers than it does games. That's actually great if I wanted to read about developers, bu the publication isn't called "Game Developer Informer".

I played the first three as a youngster on my Playstation, I thought they were cool, tho I never really beat them without codes... that was then. I skipped out on The Last Revelation, Chronicles and Angel of Darkness but picked the series back up at Legend, which I have to say, I found quite enjoyable. Then came Anniversary, the Legend-inspired re-envisioning of the original, which I also thought was pretty dang kewl. Underworld, while occasionally tedious and sort of overwhelming, tho I have not yet finished it, think it's sometimes good enough but mostly awesome, when the glitches chill out anyway. The new Tomb Raider looks cool to me. If it's anything like the series overhaul that Splinter Cell: Conviction is, I expect some fun virtual times. I have nothing against the new look or new premise. If it's a solid action-adventure game with Tomb Raider-like platforming and environmental "puzzle" solving, I don't care what "series" it's part of, I'll play it. I don't really have any thoughts about her "sex appeal" or how developed and "human" she can be, Lara Croft is a badass. And since they won't make any Indiana Jones games that even come close to this sort of experience, let alone be solid games in the first place, I'll play every Tomb Raider game that comes out as long as it's not garbage. I like a solid story and character development as much as the next guy, but first and foremost I like a solid video game.

You might want to check out Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine. It has a lot of bugs, but it's really good-looking for N64, and it's apparently very similar to Tomb Raider. There is also a PC version, but it's apparently not as good unless your primary concern is lip-syncing with the spoken dialog.

Just want to agree with the Kratos hate in this thread. The guy is a dick, but in the world of greek mythology, so were most heros. Even the gods themselves were jerks and bitches. So in a way, the God of War games have the right idea

I didn't know about this TR reboot, will have to get some more info

I thought like this when I was playing God of War 2 on the God of War Collection. I think that the games' story would be a lot more interesting if Kratos was portrayed as the villain. There's no two ways about it, he's the fucking villain. The game tries its hardest to make Kratos into a hero, but he's evil. It feels like the games are lying to me. Anyway, the games' story would be much better if the story was: "Kratos is a real Spartan bastard, now go kill shit."

Back on topic: I'd like to get Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. I got into the BETA for it through GameSpot, but could never use my Steam Key. :?
