Good games for Gaming Tournaments

by TheyCallMeTheSwede Sat Nov 27, 2010 11:06 pm

Hey guys, I have envision on having a straight up video game tournament, it was mostly inspired by ScrewAttack's Iron Man of Gaming when they have like the "All Console, All Era, All Genre" thing, I was thinking of running one on my own, basically what I am doing is brainstorming some games, and while I was at it I was thinking adding a little something like a scoring system like the IMoG, I am not sure they came up with something like this like add some challenges like achievements except they add your overall score, the challenges are in range from the simple (which gives you a lower amount of points) to the simply impossible (which gives a really high score), example, if you survive one round against Mike Tyson it will give you 500 points added to your overall score, if you actually TKO Mike Tyson it will add 50,000 points added to your overall score.

Anyway, I have came up with at least 20 games that would qualify as a "tournament" style of game...keep in mind I want to be a elimination style, like who ever came in last will be eliminated.

Guitar Hero
Sonic 2
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game
Pac-Man: Championship Edition DX
Gears of War 2
Magical Drop 2
Super Street Fighter IV
Forza 3
Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels
Track & Field
Temco Super Bowl
Doom
Perfect Dark
Geometry Wars
Mario Kart 64
NBA Jam
Castle Crashers
Saturn Bomberman
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

and at the end of the tournament, like IMoG, we will have a mystery game, but what I have in mind, it will be the hardest game we can think of, maybe something like Battletoads, Battle Kid, or just go all out and go with I Wanna Be The Guy, but there's a twist, everytime the player (aka the winner of the tournament) dies in the game, the player looses at least 20 points, so it will be a great equalizer, so at least the runner-up will actually get a chance to win, its unforgiving, but we got to make a difference somehow.

So what do you guys think? also you guys are welcome to add suggestions, I don't care if its a console or PC games, and can be from any era.

There is a SERIOUS lack of Super Smash Bros. games on that list.
Gaming accomplishments:
Nibbler (marathon): 251,169,160 / Nibbler (one life): 5,263,360 (WR)
Donkey Kong: 423,100 [L12-1] (150th place as of 2019-01-15)
Super Smash Bros. (N64): Ranked top 5 in Wisconsin from Q1 2016 to Q2 2017
Shrek SuperSlam: won largest tournament in game's history (Shrekfest 2018)

I would of like to put in a RTS game but the problem I have is that games like that would take an hour until somebody dies, I have think about adding a time limit for most of the games, like at least 30 minutes, but hey I might change it a bit just to see what happens, I might extend to an hour and maybe add at least 30 more minutes just to give the contestants a good warm up.
